Quantum Break's download size on PC is 71GB, extracts to 120GB. It still streams the TV stuff I believe, like the Xbone used to.

I assume the X patch includes many of those textures/models. The good news is that with Microsoft's system, the non-X consoles won't download the assets it can't use. And vice versa for ones the X won't use. The latter case not saving much, but on a console, every bit helps I suppose.

And PUBG's was over 10GB the other week.

I don't think I've made the adjustment mentally to patches being that size, even as I adjusted to games being 50GB or more, patches still felt like they were 1-2GB max for most titles.

Every single game is like minimum 40 gigs now it's getting out of hand. You have to be playing shuffle with your library and god help you if you're into more than one mp game at a time now. I gotta get another hdd

Couldn't fit Deus Ex: Mankind Divided on my SSD (Dirty Bomb and Path of Exile have perminent residence), so I had to look at loading screens for several minutes on each area transition. They were infrequent though and looking at looping video of a subway ride at least made sense.

One that stood out though was a mission debrief. The cutscene masking the loading was too short, but included a shot over your superior's shoulder as he watches you disembark the VTOL. Instead of the usual shot-countershot dialogue you're expecting, you instead get a black screen for a minute or so. Dunno why they didn't have you watch the clouds for a couple loops.

I assume that for now they're currently "saved" by the main delivery mechanism being discs still. And somewhat lagging behind the movie standards at that. I assume the X can't use HD Blu Ray for games which puts a semi-cap on the game sizes like DVD did for last gen.

Though it's kinda crazy that downloads have semi-erased even this limit, and they're only limited by the fact that they're putting 500GB/1TB drives in the consoles. (Except for those select S's that have 2TB.) It's like the first time people underestimated bandwidth growth. (Although Microsoft seemed to first overestimated and then reversed with all their CLOUD talk before walking back.)

I remember the dev people I was in contact with back during the 360/PS3 "HD" changeover and the magnitude of scale in everything just destroying workflows they had used for like a decade. You look and a lot of those PS2 games were like 1/2GB (best shown by the GameCube having versions) and for sub 480p resolutions at that, then they had to "theoretically" jump up to image qualities for 720p, while keeping audio and everything else that was most disc space on DVDs. And that was nothing compared to what that gen later did, this gen has done, let alone the next.

Talking about Criterion in the other thread, one of the reasons I read Renderware never made it over and EA never used it after intending to make it sorta the same studiowide techbase and eventually went with Frostbite was that it turned into a mess trying to scale it up especially the pipelines and tools. (Frostbite wound up being this too apparently.) Even Burnout Paradise is running on a hodge podge of new stuff instead of being Renderware+Work like their prior games.

And the team size explosions! Kojima's startup has over a hundred people, and it has Guerrilla Games doing a lot of the base techwork. I just saw that Epic Games and its subsidiaries are closing in on 800+ people and they aren't even really making anything announced outside of UE and Fortnite as they've just cancelled Paragon.

Far Cry 5 has five Ubisoft studios working on it, Ass Creed Origins had eight, so did Wildlands. And a bunch of those studios have 500+ people, Montreal has 3000. I have to assume EA's numbers are only going up to accommodate the Star Wars stuff.

The Kotaku report was saying Visceral itself had fallen well under a hundred employees and so they were farming out a lot of the grunt work to Vancouver and Montreal studios already so EA looked at it and said "we should just make the game there since we basically already are" and shut down Visceral.

Bitches and people who don't know that they are being ripped off.

That reminds me though that GCN was the last time a console launch really blew my mind with new graphics (admittedly, around here we all still had SD TVs when PS360 came out). Going from cartoon games like Crash Bandicoot to Luigi's Mansion was crazy. Or Star Wars Racer to Rogue Squadron.

Really? I know it was licensed Middleware used for like GTA3-VC-SA(?).

Frostbite was never really designed to be middleware and was supposed to be used by DICE-exclusively "in-house" so I'm not surprised that EA pulling it for multiple studios is making it a problem.

Sometimes though, I see some games that have plenty of fidelity but don’t blow the budget HDD wise.

Like Monster Hunter World is 13GB. IIRC Titanfall 2 was pretty svelte at launch too.

I’m guessing that part of the 50GB+ ness is related to the tool chain, or the cost of optimization not being worth it... or something like that.

I have no idea how 100GB+ games as an average size will work. I can’t imagine downloading it with caps.

Open world games tend to take up less space than linear games.

Horizon, for all its visual fidelity and variety/density clocked under 50GB compared to any COD game that balloons up to 100+ gigs after patches.

The 3DS will live until Nintendo has a reason to drop the Switch price.
It's basically the cheap system for kids now. Like, if you don't think your kids can handle a $320 piece of hardware.

Had the manufacturing plant that made the Wii U chips not shutdown Nintendo would've probably kept it around a bit longer too.

3DS is still a thing because they greenlit all these 3DS games projects before they knew that Switch would be a hit. Everything but Pokemon flopped on 3DS these last years (though Luigi's Mansion ironically will be the title for which that matters the least probably). And the machine itself really wasn't ever as successful as fanboys wanted it to be. It was great in Japan, but over here it's only artificially been protected from euthanasia more than anything.

True, although Nintendo probably would've ran a final Wii U price drop before sticking a fork in it. I don't think the system ever hit 199. Not in Europe at least.

Renderware was /arguably/ what GTA III shipped on, but it was so heavily modified that it's logo is basically included grudgingly for legal reasons, not because it's really what's holding it together.
