It's the inevitable cycle.

In a few years time some publishers will band together to organize a groundbreaking 'Live Play' event, where people can go to a location to watch video game announcements and play new video games.  :lol
I've seen the E3 floor space pricing though and that was just insane. I understand why publishers decided not to spend that money and why it always seemed like only the big publishers were willing to display their wares at E3.

That is also why in the final few editions companies like Nintendo and Sony had those multi-level booths, with gameplay spaces on the ground level and meeting spaces stacked on top of their booths.
It was cheaper to design and build a multi-level booth than it was to rent more (office) space at E3. Some companies also moved the business side of things to other buildings and hotels in the area.
The big problem with E3 was always the costs while the ESA and other organizers made a lot of money. I think that's also why Geoff cut ties with them. E3 was just a cash cow.

they killed it themselves though. i like big events like that with big reveals and funny shit, but they were asking companies to pay extortionate prices to be associated with an event that had become notorious for cringey production and bad pr

also, i dont know much about why there wasn't an online event this year but assuming most of the reason was just covid and lack of any content to reveal

yeah bo, that was a great e3 (2010). the 2019 one was just mega cringe

they're mostly packed full of cringey shit i guess, comes with the territory. it felt especially redundant in 2019 though.

I would say E3 peaked between 2004(Twilight Princess) and 2014(MGSV) after that it just became less interesting as the years went by.
Games would be announced at the VGA's or other places first. Publishers would divide their attention between GamesCom, eSports and E3.
The 'service' and 'systems' games became big so people played the same game for long periods of time with season updates, which were just less interesting as announcements than entirely new games.

C'mon, Sony's 2015 was definitely a high point, if you care about that kind of hype/presentation.

Last Guardian, Shenmue 3 and FF7 Remake all in one presentation.

Nah E3 2015 wasn't great at all.

Microsoft big game was Rise of the Tomb Raider, a timed exclusive sequel.
Nintendo had the poorest showing in years with Star Fox Zero.
FF7, TLG and Shenmue 3 were 3 interesting things in a sea of very little but two of them had a *.
Shenmue 3 was a crowdfunding thing and ended as most kickstarters did, too little too late.
It was already clear then that FF7 was just another tech demo/CG thing and wouldn't come out for years.

Things that were announced that were interesting like Project Morpheus (PlayStation VR) weren't shown.
From 2004 up to 2014 you had a great E3 every 2 years or so with interesting announcements and a strong showing from the industry.
All of that ended in 2015.

If you care about E3, it's because you care about that announcement hype.
If you apply the logic of what actually turns out to be great on release, you have very little left, tho.

A few years ago a bunch of modders were doing a remaster that looked much more impressive than this port

Rumor has it they are still working on this under the radar to prevent Disney from shutting it down.
But no one really knows for sure.

not surprising a remaster looks better than a $15 port breh. that does look p good, though it is a couple minutes of a random brown stage in what is a pretty big game.

i'd take a simple cheap port to modern hardware with a couple qol improvements that hopefully leads to a new entry over putting a heap of time into a full graphical remaster. especially with republic commando which imo still looks p good. it's like playing the halo remakes but i avoid the updated graphics, i dont think they look good and half the reason im playing this game is nostalgia. there are exceptions though, love the demon's souls remake changes for instance, even if i would've preferred them be applied to dark souls it's nice to bring inaccessible titles to modern hardware (though a shame it's an exclusive).

In the past few years, Sony has treated the PS4 gen as their flagpole/legacy over anything else up to that point. Which isn't necessarily bad, but cutting off a lot of software is due to them not having a solution or service to keep that software relevant.

Nintendo will hand pick games that are guaranteed hits or very easy to port or dump. Microsoft has Game Pass and excellent BC software/engineering that keeps old games alive. Both of these solutions make money. Sony didn't bother with any solution.

If Sony had it's own Game Pass that had a rotation of PS1, PS2, PS3, PSP and Vita games, it would most likely bring in revenue. But their leadership said fuck it, it's too expensive to design or implement BC software for that purpose.

OH!

Apparently the new game by the drunk "FUCK THE OSCARS" guy from the Video Game Awards is really good. (Josef Fares)

It's called It Takes Two and seems to be getting a bunch of 10/10 reviews. Looks like a highly refined A Way Out.
