Shattered Memories was a huge disappointment to me.  I wanted a creepy macabre game with horrors shuffling through the fog and snow and a constant threat to be present.  What I got was a bunch of gimmicky wiimote interactions punctuating dull exploration, telegraphed jump scares, and confusing chase sequences.  The graphics were nice and the psych profiling was a great, if underimplented, idea though.

It kind of pissed me off that giant bomb gave it wii game of the year because of the shymalayandingdong ending.

it was pretty well known early on that the game wasnt going to have any kind of actual combat so i dunno where you figured the threat would come from besides the chase sequences (which where also well documented before the games release).

I really loved Shattered Memories. I've never played any of the other SH games so I dont have any frame of reference. I really enjoyed the way the story panned out and the ending was shocking, depressing, and heartfelt all at the same time. Probably my favorite Wii game.

Has anyone played R-Type Command/Tactics or Valkyrie Profile Covenant of the Plume? Kinda getting an SRPG itch and would like to play one of these since they seem to be well-regarded.

Yeah VP is the DS game. I think I'm gonna play through that first since it seems to be pretty short (I've seen people say 6-12 hrs on gamefaqs). I'm more interested in R-Type though because it's an R-Type RPG. :wtf

I just wanted SOMETHING other than exploring an empty town with little in the way of rewards.  Like I found this abandoned underground complex near a water tower and thought they was going to be a cool scenario resulting.  But there's just some stupid memento keepsakes there that affect the game in no way whatsoever.  The entire game is pretty much like that.  I don't play games for story, I play them to be engaged and have fun.  You know, GAMES.

Yeah, it's a pretty good game, even though the AI for the enemies is extremely passive... and you will need multiple replays if you want the best ending. I actually like how the game branches depending onhow many of your party members you want to sacrifice, it works really well with the gameplay/theme.

Really now.

My Steam copy of Titans Quest is hardlocked to German.

Which, frankly, sucks Hitlers tiny dried-up nuts.

One can replace a bunch of files and futz around in some configs to undo this, but it's a pain and Steam wants to repair the damage every now and then, meaning you have to tell Steam to piss off, which in turn disabled automagical updates for the game, which is terribly important for such an old antique. Still, it's annoying.

So, fuck that. I jumped on Impulse and grabbed TQ gold there for 2.50€ today because I'm rich like that.

...

The impulse version, as it turns out, is hardlocked to English.

For some reason this tickles my funny bone. German humour, I guess.  :-\

Some other news
Quote
THQ's just said it's planning to bring its experimental MX vs. ATV pricing model to "another major franchise".

The publisher launched MX vs. ATV: Alive in The States at a lower than usual RRP of $39.99 (£25), the plan being that it'd grow a larger install base for the title and make more money via DLC.

Core games boss Danny Bilson told press at a New York City event this afternoon that, despite telling a whole room full of people about the plans to put the price point on another franchise, this is "not an official announcement".The game in question will probably be released in 2012, he added

It's a bit obnoxiously Web 2.0, but I can't bring myself to hate on a logo that isn't simply the company name spelled out in Helvetica.  It has some nice negative space and is relatively unique, even if the Q reminds me of the old Phillies insignia.

It's UFC Undisputed.

That wouldn't surprise me, especially if they're going to a longer release cycle. Basic roster of ~50 guys. Buy packs of 5 extra @ $5 a weight class, buy more arenas, buy more fight camps/sponsors. Every 3-4 months a new pack of fighters is released, there's another $5-10. It could work, especially since it skews older than Smackdown v Raw.

I just installed Tron 2.0. So good. Not couch-compatible though, 360 controller has major deadzone and button mapping issues. KB&M it is.

My wireless keyboard is just so bothersome to use while lounging on my couch. I fear I need one of those Keyboard/Joystick hybrids, ugly and expensive as they are. Mouse on thigh works, but leaves no place for keyboard. :-\ I guess I could always just get fatter...

Anyways, I plan on  replaying that bitch until I get to that one sequence where you have to hop around on disintegrating platforms while being shot at, die several times, then quicksave over my only recent save while in flight to a messy death, then throw a hissy fit and abandon it; again. Gonna be awesome.

Wii gamers will be disappointed to discover that Harmonix on pulling Rock Band Network support for the Wii as of next week.

Apparently it's not worth the effort to bring these songs to the Wii or so says Rock Band staffer Aaron Trites who broke the news on his twiter.

"Next Tuesday, 1/18/2010, will also be the last scheduled batch of Rock Band Network songs brought over to the Wii," said Trites

"With the smaller online install base, limited demand for releases so far and the significant amount of work it takes for our producers and audio team to convert and process these additional tracks we're no longer able to continue submitting RBN content to the Wii. Regular Wii DLC, and RBN releases for the 360 and PS3 will continue uninterrupted."
