I don't have a problem with Kojima doing this in itself, but Keighley acting so transparently as a marketer by playing into the joke seems kinda gross.

There's no joke to get.  Everyone figured this out already.  Kojima's just wasting Konami's money now in yet another aggressive attempt to prove how clever he thinks he is.  Hiring an actor could have paid the development budget of a new IGAvania, damnit.

but he hired an actor for what? that's what i don't know

EDIT: joakim is an anagram of kojima

:ohhh

i tought that photo was just kojima and a random dude,i didn't realize he hired a guy to play kojima dressed as hulk hogan :lol

Saints Row franchise is the most progressive franchise in gaming. Make a man? Game doesn't care. Change that man into a woman mid game via plastic surgery for a price of 800 in game bux? Game doesn't care; characters just say "change your hair?" Aside from a very stupid piece of dialogue in SR3's pro wrestling mission every single line is gender neutral towards your characters identity. Each and every voice can choose from have different stories and personalities and origins. One female voice is a sexually empowered maniac. The other likes to play it cute but with a hint if menace.

One man voice has the Boss as suave, another as a generic gang banger. Each and every gang is gender and race neutral. No one cares. In SR2 there is a Japanese yakuza gang and most of its members are a bunch of white suburban kids. Gang has black, white, Asian, Latino members with a myriad in differences in gender? Why the fuck not?

For being considered the industry class clown, SR really shows a type of world that simply does not exist: where people are not judged by their race or gender on how bad ass they are. I suggest any pretentious wanker to dissect those games line for line. They will probably come surprised.

dude... it has the best character creator EASILY, but calling the rest of the series' content progressive is so very ::) i mean jesus christ there is actually a mission in sr3 where the characters whole house is filled with "black widows" and you have gun down hundreds of mostly-naked women. seriously man, come on

Regarding Greenlight:

“It’s unavoidable that people will judge your game, so it’s just a question of whether that comes early or late in the process,” he reasoned. “It’s not worth worrying about that.”

Watching that presentation, I thought it might hold some possibilities for (independent developers) like us.

“Steam is more indie-friendly than the big console makers. Also, the PC environment is changing, with Windows 8 on Intel’s Ultrabook, lots of new products like that. It’s somewhere between an iPad and an Alienware-style graphics-heavy computer, and it looks like a gamer-friendly setup.”

Developers cannot put their game on Steam without first clearing Greenlight; with Playism’s help, La-Mulana got through and is now being prepared for sale.

“Now Playism is able to offer that route for Japanese developers onto Steam, and if things go well then it could mean access to the West for Japanese developers,” said Naramura. “But the problem is that it’s very difficult to get Japanese gamers to support a campaign on Greenlight, as Steam is still not that popular among those who don’t speak English.”

Indeed, the Greenlight system is not ideal for Japanese devs: There is a risk of public failure, and Japanese companies and individuals are generally averse to losing face. Also, getting one game past Greenlight does not give a developer a fastrack route with their next game – each title must be voted through on its own merits, which makes it difficult to plan ahead.

“It would be a lot easier if Japanese publishers could make a deal to sell on Steam directly,” said Naramura. “Greenlight is problematic. La-Mulana already had a fan base overseas, and that helped us to progress to Steam. But I don’t think it’s the case that all the games that get past Greenlight are necessarily the most interesting ones.”

I’m interested. I didn’t know the ins and outs of Steam’s system before today’s presentation, but now I think I might have a project that would be just right.”

 Regarding Kickstarter:

Quote:

Ben Judd, formerly of Capcom and now an agent with Digital Development Management, explained in a presentation that some of his US-based clients are willing to partner with Japanese developers so that they can access Kickstarter. This prospect did seem to interest some delegates.

When you go through a publisher, you have to take on board all sorts of feedback and it inevitably takes a long time. So in the case of a socially funded Kickstarter project, it’s better to make something that can only be made now, that doesn’t take a long time to make, that is part of the zeitgeist. That’s how I’d want to use it.”

I think it’s fascinating that Kickstarter lets you gather funds before you deliver the product.”

I don’t think too far into the future. Kickstarter is a great service for indies though, and I think someone will use it well. But from what I heard today it’s impossible for a Japanese resident to use Kickstarter themselves, so there are still barriers. If you could use it in Japan I’d consider it.”

Actually, it pretty much is the only way now if my understanding is correct.

It's...confusing.  I've heard that the only way to get your game on Steam is now via Greenlight, but I still see random indie games I've never heard of and which have never been approved show up on the store several times a week.

Valve had good intentions, but the implementation has been a failure.

If it's been in the IGF then they're automatically approved. Also if a developer already has a game on there any further games they make get on as well, though Wadjet Eye (Blackwell, Gemini Rue, Primordia) games seem to prove that wrong, since they had to go through Greenlight regardless. The big publishers are exempt of course, smaller ones like dtp still have to petition the masses.
Yeah, Greenlight sucks. I had initially assumed that it was meant to supplement the process, but it has apparently supplanted it entirely. Crowd-sourcing curation is a fucking stupid idea.

I don't get it: Steam is a store, not a publisher, right?

The hoops through which iOS and Android devs must jump are minimal compared to Microsoft/Sony/Nintendo hoops (and Nintendo hoops even CHANGE frequently).

Why would Steam try to shut the door on new development this way?

You don't want to clutter up the store with crap nobody is going to buy. It will just reduce the exposure and sales reduce everything else.

That's a weird argument for a store that has no thing as shelving space. I mean if a game is low profile, just make it invisible unless somebody specifically searches for it? No need to give attention on the storefront.

Yeah, but they could still do something close to the scale and felling of actually controlling a giant mech. Even though, you don't directly control the mech in RAD, the game still had a great since of scale as you would feel the mech walking through the city. It felt giant, unlike a lot of other mech games that are just regular old third person shooters. So it would be cool if a game emulated the aspect of RAD. Something that actually felt like you were controlling this big thing.

You get it.  RAD was fucking awesome because of the sense of scale.  Things were slow, hard to pull off, but once it clicked, man it fucking clicked.  Easily one of my favorite ps2 games.
