Driveclub PS Plus edition is finally coming out something like ~600 days after initially planned

Didn't they pull it right away though because the servers "weren't ready"? :lol

Kapitan Karakand's EVE Chronicles Episode 1.1 - "Prey it Forward"

spoiler (click to show/hide)
Bring me 3x rat tails, we've all heard this MMO tale. EVE has these too of course, but EVE being EVE, it makes them obnoxious and rather punitive. Case in point: data centers.

NPCs have levels in EVE and the corresponding challenge and payoff of their quests roughly correspond to these levels. The only way to ascend up to higher levels of NPCs is to build standing with the faction an NPC belongs to. You can make standing grind slightly easier with some skills, but for the most part it's just a dull grind of insipid missions.

Enter data centers.

Data centers are zones that have NPCs that give you tedious collect quests. And when I say tedious I don't mean conceptually tedious, I mean that the items you need to collect don't drop with regularity. Why bother then you might be wondering? Because the NPCs at data centers give you huge bumps to standing if you complete their missions. Oh yeah, this also means that if you don't complete the quest after accepting it you also get a disproportionately large hit to faction standing too.

What's the natural consequence of this? People just buy the items in TEH MARKETZZZ for ludicrous markup. 420 xXnO sCoPeXx 360 mlg buy orders outchea, lich. :pimp

There are a couple of ways to look up items on the market, some are more stupid than others. My natural inclination is to type text into the search box. That's one of the most stupid ones, FYI.

When I didn't know anything about standing grind I accepted a data center quest. I put it off for awhile because the market surcharge was too rich for my blood, but eventually I found out how much risk I was putting my faction grind at by leaving this quest hanging and got a bunch of ISK so I just decided to buy my way out of trouble.

So I hop in my market browser and type in the most unique word in the name of the item I'm looking for and the market browser dumps out like 15 items instead of just 1 like I was hoping for. This was at night after my usual 12+ hour day of looking at financial data all day so I was lazy and bought what I thought I needed for what I thought was a good price.

I hadn't bought what I needed and it wasn't a good price.

Illustrative example: If I needed to buy 3x Mk Alpha Widgets which sell for a million ISK each due to mark up, I had bought 3x Mk Alpha-2 Widgets at 250,000 ISK each instead.

Did I log off in a fit of rage? Did I storm off to the official EVE Online forums and complain? Did I pour myself another glass of absinthe and contemplate how hard my personal mistakes are punished by the skeins of fate? No, no, possibly.

What I did do was go, "How can I turn this L into a Ł?"

After some consideration I hatched the following harebrained scheme: Operating on the assumption I can't be the only person who searches the market by text input, and I definitely can't be the only person who shops after a long day irl, and I absolutely can't be the only lazy MMO player, I decided to put these items on the market like they were the item everyone running this mission would be looking to buy quick. Sure I couldn't change the name, but I could put them on sale in the system with the data center and I could sell them at a price that was close to the price that the real McCoy was selling at (but 30% cheaper to look like I was a seller who couldn't / didn't want to wait for someone to buy my wares at the equilibrium price :quark).

This was 10-12 days ago. Every day I check my open sell orders hoping to see that some sorry sap has taken the bait and bought my electronic pyrite but no one ever fell for my deception. :idont

Until tonight that is. :money

Yes friends, I sold absolutely nothing at 5x what I paid for it to someone looking for something by preying on the laziness of others and a ghastly user interface. :paul

Welcome to New Eden.

I'm surprised that game is still somewhat alive and being supported especially with the narrative that CCP hardly gives a fuck about it

I think they give a fuck in that it's a testbed for them to learn about F2P outside EVE (when they introduced F2Pesque cosmetics in EVE the players got super duper :umad whereas us DUST Bunnies go :mouf content), and it gives them an excuse to keep CCP Shanghai operating which makes sense as a long-term investment but in the short-term there's not really much justification for its existence without DUST 514. If you believe EVE: Legion still exists, it's also a way of learning lessons that can be applied to that game while making money.

They do not allocate a great deal of resources to the game, that much is for sure. I joke about the size of the team but it really is extremely small and they are often hamstrung by being part of the same server as EVE Online. (e.g. In order to form an alliance of corporations in DUST you have to have an EVE character set it up, the corporation code just won't support it any other way. When asked if it's possible to change that, the devs were like, "Yeah... because the code for corporations and nullsec sovereignty is very delicate, CCP said we can't fix that because it might bork EVE.)

Fortunately the current director of the game was a home run hire.

How active of a community are the Call of Duties on PC compare to consoles?

I'm going to want BO3, but only way I can play is PC. CoD, it's still real to me dammit. They're good (multiplayer) games.

The communities are nowhere near as active as the console communities. This isn't a major problem for roughly the first 9 to 12 months of the titles. There are still enough people playing that you can get a game in most of the popular modes. After that though its very difficult to get anything outside of TMD. It's not like the console games where you can easily go back years later and still find a lot of people in the different modes.

Also COD switched over from the server browser model to the matchmaking model which doesn't help when the community numbers start to dip. Also they are less proactive on banning cheaters on the PC side, and often the game balance is done strictly for the console versions with no accounting for how the aiming model on PC is completely different.

Not trying to scare you away from the PC version but just letting you know, you will be treated like the red headed step child of the family when it comes to support.

There is a looong list of games that are region free though. I don't know if there's an easy to search list out there. I've always just looked at PlayAsia's store page for that (since I'd be buying US, "Asia" or Japanese versions).

The weirdest thing there, in my experience trying to buy non-Japanese games in Japan, is that Japanese versions are almost always region-locked, but "Asia" versions (read: "Chinese") are almost always region-free and the content is in English.

The most common exception has been anything from EA Games, which also lock their Asia editions.

:dead

OK, yeah, but if you're just going to stand there making sense, I don't know if I have time for this conversation.  :lol

To be honest, I think it has more to do with control. Making certain that their Japanese region games are protected from grey market exporting, "robbing" the potential value from a (possible) localized version.

Culturally, my largely uninformed opinion is that China is a more culturally xenophobic culture than Japan, but due to rampant, ubiquitous, and systematized piracy of media, the lack of a region lock is a defensive decision.

Yeah, I agree about control being a big part of it.  I think Japan's a great place and the actual people there are totally cool, but like business decisions have so much "don't stray from the line we've been using since our imperialistic days; change = bad!!" that I hardly ever expect companies to do things that are actually progressive and make sense over there.  Of course, China is worse, look at how much control they have just over their internet usage.

In Japan, when they do it's usually small non-public companies that are cool like Falcom.  Falcom would even offer to sell and ship their PC games overseas from their store and had instructions on their website on how to do it.  Good stuff.

I completely agree; the smaller the company, the more responsiveness they're capable of; larger companies are disinclined toward change. I spent a good portion of my decade trying to implement the most basic changes for more efficient and practical development, and my efforts were largely futile.

Yeah, I honestly can't imagine working as a foreigner at a big Japanese company and trying to get them to change things up to become more modern and use more modern techniques in the field.  That must have been frustrating.

It really was depressing.

I mean, at the end of ten years, I found myself with hallmark depression symptoms, and when I snapped out of that, I was basically ready to give up everything: financial stability, my local family support, the house I designed and built -- all just to get the hell out of Dodge City. That's why I was in the USA in 2012, the year you and I happened to meet at that wedding.

I think I'm finally beginning to get past it, but a friend recently posted about being given a game design document in Excel format and it was almost a triggering event. :lol

"History of the Xbox" podcast with Seamus Blackley, Peter Moore and Phil Spencer. For IGN interviewing MS and EA employees, it's surprisingly candid and at points brutal (All three look pretty unhappy when they talk about trying to break Japan and completely failing. Also the games they had to shitcan like True Fantasy Online).

The port is good, the game is good. I generally have to arrange online matches because just jumping in and searching never seems to deliver an opponent. That might be different in the US, idk. netcode during play is fine though.

So I saw the guy at Nippon Ichi who made games I like (Zettai Hero Project, Disgaea 4), is releasing his new game at Compile Heart soon (Makai Shin Trillion).  It looks terrible, but he makes good stat stat games, so not really sure if I want to try it.  Will wait until there's some import impressions I guess.

Looks kind of bad and unfortunately even more pervy than N1 since he's now at Compile Heart perv factory.  Seems like it's a boss rush only SRPG, which sounds sort of interesting gameplay-wise.

Yeah, I go against the grain and didn't care for Bayo 2 that much, wouldn't buy a system for it.  Xenoblade X wasn't worth buying a system for either.  Dunno about FF.

That being said, you can probably scrape together enough games worth getting a system for.  But just barely.  I'll be surprised if I own more than 10-15 Wii U games by the time the system is discontinued.

Xenoblade X looks like FedEX the videogame. Fetch quests up the oozy

wish Nintendo would of have worked with Namco or Square to bring back Saga or Gears instead

From looking up how many times it changed engines to make a worthless joke in the Devil's Turd thread I came across this Wired piece on Duke Nukem Forever as part of their series on failures.  :lol
Learn to Let Go: How Success Killed Duke Nukem
http://www.wired.com/2009/12/fail_duke_nukem/

Quote
“We see Duke Nukem as a franchise that will be around 30 years from now, like James Bond,”
Quote
He’d see a new game with a flashy graphics technique and demand the effect be incorporated into Duke Nukem Forever. “One day George started pushing for snow levels,” recalls a developer who worked on Duke Nukem Forever for several years starting in 2000. Why? “He had seen The Thing” — a new game based on the horror movie of the same name, set in the snowbound Antarctic — “and he wanted it.” The staff developed a running joke: If a new title comes out, don’t let George see it. When the influential shoot-‘em-up Half-Life debuted in 1998, it opened with a famously interactive narrative sequence in which the player begins his workday in a laboratory, overhearing a coworker’s conversation that slowly sets a mood of dread. The day after Broussard played it, an employee told me, the cofounder walked into the office saying, “Oh my God, we have to have that in Duke Nukem Forever.”
Quote
When he brought a few journalists over to a computer to show off bits of the game, he pointed out the way you could see individual wrinkles on characters’ faces and mused over how to make his campfire more realistic. (“As soon as we mix in some white smoke and some black smoke, I think we’ll be there,” he said.)
Quote
He ripped out the ceiling of a room at the 3D Realms office to assemble a motion-capture lab, which would help his team in rendering “complex motions like strippers,” he noted
Quote
Broussard erupted. “Take-Two needs to STFU,” he hissed in a dicussion-board posting, using the well-known shorthand for “shut the fuck up.”

So I finally got a Japanese PS2. The floodgates are open.

I actually think I got a decent deal off ebay.

I got a White Fat Model complete and it seems like it's in pretty great condition.

Complete with complete versions of

Final Fantasy X International.
Final Fantasy X-2 International.
Silent Hill 2 Restless Dreams
Silent Hill 3
Resident Evil 4
Resident Evil Gun Survivor: Heroes Never Die.
Dino Stalker
Xenosaga Episode 1
Suikoden 3

Now I pretty much already own the US versions of these games, still for a lame collector like me I'm pretty happy to have them. Though, man XII international would have made me lose it.

All this for $112 dollars total. I think I lucked out since even black models seem to be going for that by themselves.
