Why can't SEGA make a new Crazy Taxi as a downloadable game?
The Offspring don't have a label and haven't released an album in five years.

This is what Playstation Now should have been.  :maf

I bought this game and it is really good.  My only major gripe is the mapping system is janky due to the fact you have to buy maps and icons from NPCs.

This is why hardcore Zelda fans will gobble up anything. A half an hour analysis of preview vs release that is mostly "omg it was the A button at E3 now it's B" nad insignificant script changes. No mention of the downgrades and the usual laughable tech demo that is leaps and bounds above the actual game :lol

Bonus towards the end as to why the game was delayed. The Nintendo version of "HD towns is hard brehs" basically. Clearly, it's not TP all over again and they wanted to launch simultaneously on the new platform since the previous one tanked :doge

I so want to hear what the game preservation types think about their cause being used to justify this sort of practice. That's like saying Johnny Depp has enough money now or Meryl Streep has enough accolades already so it's fine to pirate their movies, and then asking a film historian if they agree.

As with any of these types of posts, I'd ask about what those particular specs cost in today's terms to actually put into perspective what I'd be saving $ wise by simply not buying the game. That's the cost of the components, in Australian retail terms.

"I just got reamed by Gerry Harvey on the price of a 4K computer monitor, but gee at least Nintendo didn't get my money. Maybe that'll teach them to put Metroid on Xbox."

Frankly with the pace of Wii/Wii U, and hopefully in the future Switch emulation, it makes me more keen for buying the games and just emulating them on the PC. I like the concept of having a single system that plays everything. It's not that unlike the idea behind the Nintendo Virtual Console, which itself funnily enough was discovered charging for ripped ROMs sourced from the interwebs.

It's not quite the black and white situation as some paint it. The emulator developers clearly find solving the challenges of emulating a system rewarding and continue to improve (as well as being perfectly legally entitled to do so), while people like me find it interesting to read about the progress made and owners of the games and systems being able to enjoy higher fidelity (and potentially better performing) experiences. There are of course those who see it as an opportunity for not plonking down some cash for new releases by finding pirated versions but that's an unavoidable aspect that's been the case for nearly all forms of media since inception and not the responsibility of emulator developers.

My radical positions on copyright law aside, in some cases I always say just go for it. Especially if the company went defunct decades ago and used copies are the only way to acquire it. It's one thing when you can pop onto GOG or Steam or Origin and pay for a key that goes to the holder.

In the case of the GCN/Wii/Wii U Nintendo at least burned their discs in such a way that you need the consoles to rip them, a regular drive wouldn't do it like with a PS1 or DC back in the day.

But there's no way I'm going to pull out everything to rip one of my copies of Metroid Prime or whatever to a usb drive to futz around with Dolphin when a new version comes out or I get new hardware. I'm just downloading that shit. Especially since the ripping speed was like a 1x or 2x speed on the drives. (Also it would mirror the whole disc. Like New Super Mario Bros. Wii would create a 4GB image, but you can download a stripped version that's like 200MB which is the actual size of the content that was on the disc.)

The fast fan emulation of the Wii and Wii U and 3DS are Nintendo's doing anyway since they basically just iterated on the prior hardware. The Wii is an upclocked GCN, the Wii U puts three upclocked Wii CPU's together and sticks in a normal graphics card, etc. Developers aren't having to re-write entire things since the hardware itself accepts the same commands. Sony emulation has all but slowed to a crawl after the PSP because the PS3 is a mess and the PS2 situation is still a lot of hacking things together. Microsoft wound up making their own stuff easier to emulate on their own end for their own purposes, that 360 emulator just happened to take huge leaps right as Microsoft started getting their 360 emulation going on the One.

Since the Switch is basically a Tegra I imagine it's not going to take long on it either.

It's funny how people like Laura though make so many faulty assumptions. Like someone won't just play something else on their existing platforms if they can't get Zelda rather than try and buy a Switch and the game.

It's one thing when you can pop onto GOG or Steam or Origin and pay for a key that goes to the holder.

Putting aside the who gets what part of it there are also cases when even buying through such avenues isn't enough to get a working game, or when existing physical copies can't be run on modern systems. The SecuROM enabled version of Crysis 1 for example can't be run by some users due to the DRM, for various reasons including merely being on Windows 10. Until GOG managed to release it the game could only be played DRM-free via cracks. Of course these things aren't widely celebrated as beneficial due to the taboo legal side of things but they serve a useful purpose.

But there's no way I'm going to pull out everything to rip one of my copies of Metroid Prime or whatever to a usb drive to futz around with Dolphin when a new version comes out or I get new hardware. I'm just downloading that shit.

I do this for vinyl rips, and CDs bought online before they arrive. It's probably a grey area but I feel I've done the right thing to begin with for it to feel justifiable.

Yeah, I found that out when I installed Crysis off Origin not too long ago, you have to patch over it while running in compatibility mode or something because they removed it in a patch but Origin's version isn't the newest or something.

On a side note, GOG has a few games that are actually fine on Windows 10 but they haven't tested so you can't use Galaxy with it.

Actually the biggest problem I've found, first with another Origin game Medal of Honor: Airborne, and then even something as simple as Madden NFL 08. When you go to install them they say "you need to upgrade to Windows 98 or newer" and that's actually the only problem with them. You can't install them. And nobody is ever going to bother to update those installers. And a no-cd patch doesn't help with that. :lol

Probably should just make a Vista or XP VM. VMWare has had pretty good passthrough hardware acceleration for a while I think. (Then watch Origin say I need to update to Windows 7 or newer or something.)

what's always weird to me is when people get mad that classic game isn't up for sale. like 1) that money is prolly just going to a license holder nowadays, and 2) if you really wanna play it, then just download it and buy it later if it ever becomes available. but I dunno, sometimes people are weird about taking stuff for free.

Epic's had their UT reboot out for two years now...and this started as a Quake Live expansion. :doge

spoiler (click to show/hide)
Though it's not like either, it has "heroes" (the titular champions) ala Overwatch and everything else who each have different abilities.

This isn't even running on id Tech 6 but Saber Interactive's technology.

UT is basically just rebuilding UT 2004 but in Unreal 4.

If I were to buy a new PS4 today I would go for the PS4 Pro model. More and more games are putting the extra power to good use, either improving the resolution or the frame rate.

Of course, it all depends on your economy and if you rather want to spend that extra money on something else.

Pro fo sho, especially since you have a 4k TV.

Hm.  I don't care too much about framerate and graphics.  They're nice but I mean, I've been on X1 since 2013 so having the best version isn't really a concern for me.

I guess the sticking point is has Sony confirmed they won't split the userbase by making PS4 Pro only games?  I don't want to have to end up buying again in a few years because new games won't play on my slim.

Get the Pro.  Especially with a 4K TV.  It's worth the extra $100 or whatever price difference it currently is.  Boost mode is also pretty nice.  I've been in the 4.5 beta for a few weeks and the difference in some games is pretty noticeable.

Does everything I want.

Many games have fantastic performance and image quality in pro modes.

External HDD support means I can easily install everything and so now I have over 70 games installed.

Custom wallpapers now so I can chose what I want.

Boost mode that impacts old games, especially titles I wanted to see improvements in (Battlefield 4 and Evil Within)

And combined with the fact that the library is increasingly great and really shows no signs of dropping off and you have  a pretty perfect system. At least for me. It's a huge improvement over the PS3.

I've recently stumbled upon Super Everdrive and I've been re-visiting the SNES library for the past week week.. And I've realized something pretty shocking. With Hindsight, The SNES has a pretty terrible lineup of games. It was a goldmine for jrpgs, first party stuff, and the superior arcade ports (sf2*, mk2-mk3), but 3rd party support was TERRIBLE  :doge . I would go even as far as saying that the NES had a more versatile line-up for its era. The NES has tons of action platformers and arcade style action games, while the snes took a serious turn toward rpgs, sport games and mascot platformers.

During those days, I was such a snes fanboy, but I was blinded by the graphics I guess  :-\
