I've recently stumbled upon Super Everdrive and I've been re-visiting the SNES library for the past week week.. And I've realized something pretty shocking. With Hindsight, The SNES has a pretty terrible lineup of games. It was a goldmine for jrpgs, first party stuff, and the superior arcade ports (sf2*, mk2-mk3), but 3rd party support was TERRIBLE  :doge . I would go even as far as saying that the NES had a more versatile line-up for its era. The NES has tons of action platformers and arcade style action games, while the snes took a serious turn toward rpgs, sport games and mascot platformers.

During those days, I was such a snes fanboy, but I was blinded by the graphics I guess  :-\
I was actually looking into getting a Super Everdrive; any reason you got that over the SD2NES? Have you experienced any drawbacks?

Practically every single 3rd party was represented on the SNES, I have no idea how you could say the support was terrible.

The only genre the SNES is really weak at is shmups. You have Space Megaforce, Axelay (a bit overrated), and some decent ones like Darius Twin, Gradius III, Super Nova, Biometal (2 Unlimited on the American soundtrack!), R-Type 3 but nothing on the level of what the Turbo and Genesis were putting out.

Stuff I've been playing lately;

H1Z1: KotK - I grabbed this on sale with steam card wallet leftovers a couple months back and didn't really get around to really trying it til the last couple weeks. At first it seemed like a pretty simple, kind of buggy mess, but after 20 hours I can say that it's a very simple, insanely buggy mess. I can't think of any game in recent years I've regretted playing as much as this, since almost every game is filled to the brim with frustration and completely devoid of any feeling of reward or satisfaction. I'll probably still try to get to platinum this season.

Elite Dangerous - I got this and a HOTAS after Star Wars came out and was too stressed out by the prospect of memorizing the retardedly complicated control scheme to get beyond the tutorials, but after a few hours with it I've gotten used to the basics and I'm finally figuring out how it works. I've spent most of my time fruitlessly searching for a mining laser, doing low level quests, and picking off random bounties. Shit is a lot of fun, but it's also pretty daunting - not quite EVE level intimidating, but also a lot more UI intensive than anything I've played in years. Still have a lot to figure out, but I feel like I'm at least capable of figuring it out, whereas my time with EVE felt like I was liberal arts freshman who accidentally walked into a pHD economics program.

Also Isaac, Overwatch, and CSGO but those are evergreens

I was actually looking into getting a Super Everdrive; any reason you got that over the SD2NES? Have you experienced any drawbacks?

I went for a Super Everdrive China Edition. It's the cheapest option, and it works really well. It seems a bit finicky with SD card, but I don't know if it's a problem with the cards I tried it with. It wouldn't read my standard kingston 8mb card at all but it works perfectly fine with a lexar. Mileage may vary. As long as the card is formatted in fat32.

I paid 125$CAN for it, but I've seen that you can get it for much cheaper on ebay if you order from mysterious asian resellers, i've seen it for 70 Trumpbucks.

Just googled around, and legit sd2snes seems to be around 160-200$ depending on the options? With the exchange rate, it's getting kind of expensive.

You put the roms on the sd card using Windows, so no need for crazy weird finicky software, which is fucking GREAT. I've owned a lot of copiers for various consoles and handhelds over time, and to be able to do this without some super crap software with Chinese error messages is liberating.

The only drawbacks is that the Super Everdrive China Edition doesn't support any special chip at all. So Forgat about Mario Kart, Star Fox, Doom and other games that used special chips. There are lists out there that show you what works and what doesn't. It's no real big deal to me personally.

One small annoyance is that you can only flash ONE game at the time into the cart. You can't have a fancy menu with 5-6 games that you can quickly boot to. But I think the sd2snes is the same for this.

Also, when you flash the game to the memory chip, it might take a minute or two. It will erase the previous game, flash the new, and then it convert the save game format to its own, thats actually the longest part of the process. It might take a minute or two, sometimes it's very fast. It depends on the game.

But once its flashed to memory, you can boot straight into it, and when you reboot the snes, the game will be in memory.

There's no game genie support.

My main interest was to try translated game on the real hardware, betas and prototypes and all the cool hacked stuff. I did run into a few proto/beta games that would boot to a black screen, but that's it.  I never had any issue with retail games or translated stuff.

It's worth the purchase. For the price, you can't go wrong. It's really fun to try those BS SatView games on the real hardware, and I love fucking around with beta version of games.

Is it worth getting a ps4 pro or should I save the money and get a slim? I have a 4k TV if that matters

Get the Pro.  Especially with a 4K TV.  It's worth the extra $100 or whatever price difference it currently is.  Boost mode is also pretty nice.  I've been in the 4.5 beta for a few weeks and the difference in some games is pretty noticeable.
I ended up going with the slim.  with the amount of games I want to play, apathetic attitude towards graphics in general and other devices I just couldn't justify it in my mind.  I bought it last night on a whim after going back and forth since I last posted about it.  What pushed me over the edge was my 360 finally dying and needing something to watch Netflix on in the bedroom.  Games are just a bonus.

You can tell people were disappointed by ME3 when barely cohesive or coherent trash like this video receives near unanimous adulation, despite it being the verbal equivalent of typing without punctuation. Unbearable. Having and hour to burn and wanting to pick at the ME3 scab some more was not enough for me to get through this. Guess I don't hate myself quite as much as I have thought.

There are timestamps in the description, but he himself seems to have struggled with breaking it up into pieces, as the "story" section for instance has him talking about the music for large parts of it.

Don't bother if survival games (as in, Subnautica, Ark etc) bore you to death. But if you're not refractory to the genre, it's pretty cool.

1 & 2 were great (1 for story/atmosphere, 2 for shooting things with magic sci-fi powers).  Haven't played 3 but from what I understand it's pretty good outside the ending.  So it sounds like 4 is a step down for the series.

That video makes the game look way more exciting and fun.

I was disappointed when Star Trek wasn't as mindlessly broken as internet videos made it look. I saw way cooler bugs than any of the videos that only played through the first half hour like shots firing at right angles out of phasers and AI that would ignore the map paths deliberately to the point of leaving the intended areas. (Just like you could actually do!) Also an amazing inconsistency on what things you could vault/jump over. Piece of flat metal laying on the ground? Nope, sorry, you're walking around that buddy.

Also, the ability to screw up cutscenes by forcing your character into awkward positions as they start became a mini-game to me.

In Star Trek there's a part where you're supposed to cover some cliffs while under fire from a number of Gorn soldiers along with some sentry defense things. And they mapped it out properly except they didn't account for two things.

The ledge hang animation and the fact that when your AI partner rescues you from a fall near to them, you can "cheat" a little on the distance.

You can combine this to "convince" the Gorn that you're right next to them, hanging on the ledge that you're not supposed to be near, sending them into a melee animation frenzy, then go back and make an impossible leap back but which triggers your AI partner (in my case Spock) little cutscene where they save you. Only now I'm back at the start, so all the Gorn precede to melee their way off the cliff after you and dying which shuts off the other defenses because you're not supposed to be able to kill them until you get to the end of the cliffs and the game seems to assume I just went back there for some reason.

Really, you can sequence break the game like this a lot by ignoring everything going on around you to complete the various tasks which instantly "turns off" the enemies and other stuff. Actually it turns off the AI in general, which in my case left Spock stranded in all sorts of locations just standing not understanding how to get back down to where I was because the teamwork never happened and yet all the tasks were completed. Or left me with doors I couldn't open because you needed Spock's assistance.

It actually made the game more... fascinating. :teehee

A lot of the bugs in videos were because of stuff like this where nobody went back through for a final pass to clean up holes. So you could get yourself into them easily, basically on anything involving climbing. Especially if you're like Giant Bomb or whoever who constantly show that they don't really pay attention to when games are telling you specifically how to go about something. :lol

I love jank so much I guess people are upset cuz it Mass Effect which is supposed to be some kind of games can be art mang thing?

And then there's well...SAINTS ROW's awesome jank, like the gas station pumps in 2. Every GTA ever, swingsets in IV. etc.
