Unlike Crash Bandicoot I wouldn't really argue against Spyro being overrated, but they sure made that remake look dope. Also, I haven't played the second or third one, maybe those are a little less shallow. I'll get it :trumps

OG Spyro is a really good game, still holds up reasonably well. Never did play the other two on the PS1, though.

2 improves on the first game in every aspect, really accepts that using new abilities to unlock new parts of the same levels hook that the first game really only started to toy with using the super dash. While keeping all the regular exploration of finding secret areas with basic moves. It does have far fewer areas that you can just run through in like a minute and "beat" the level while having missed 90% of it since it tries to encourage you to look around more.

3 starts to add in friends and skateboarding and all kinds of other stuff and sorta loses the plot.

The second Spyro is probably the best platformer on the PSX aside from maybe Ape Escape.

Spyro > Crash.

I can’t really think of any great 3d platformers on the PSX that I’m dying to play.

What was there, really? Spyro and crash?... Gex?

Croc was god tier when I was still a kid.

But all those games are quite dated these days. Not sure how well Spyro gameplay will hold up. I remember it being very simplistic.

Iunno, mang. I'm more of a 2D guy - even with platformers.  :-\

3D doesn't really add all that much, except for the fact that you can never be absolutely 100% sure that you are supposed to cross a chasm. You can say with confidence that you'll be able to make the jump, sure, but it's not like with 2D games where you can practically count the pixels.

One swivel of the camera, a tiny deviation from the perfect shortest path between platforms, and your character plummets to its death.

So yeah. 2D Pixel jump and runs are where it's at. Like with everything else that is important, 2D reigns supreme. :smug

Yeah, and like I said. It'd be even smaller in 3D. And harder to use.  :doge

I mean, look at that. 1296 different moves! :o Why, in Custer's Revenge back in the day it was just a bit of shuffling back and forth. AND the girl was all tied up prim and proper like. Nowadays, them womenfolks all want to be treated and valued properly. Bah humbugh.

Billy Mitchell was found to be a cheater (not just from MAME but a modified ROM that allowed for some things to be done easier, apparently) and all of his high scores were removed from Twin Galaxies.  They also contacted The Guiness Book Of World Records about their findings.

https://www.twingalaxies.com/feed_details.php/1047/billy-mitchells-donkey-kong-and-all-other-records-removed/4

My statement on Twin Galaxies' decision... - Patrick Scott Patterson

(Long post)
spoiler (click to show/hide)
Quote
My statement on Twin Galaxies' decision to ban Billy Mitchell and remove his scores:

"I'd rather be hated for who I am than loved for who I'm not."

The myth of Billy Mitchell is built on a foundation of exaggeration, plausible deniability and defamation of others. He's a gimmick, a carny, a grifter.

And at one point in time, I fell for it, too. Just like a lot of you did. Just like some of you are now.

The fact that people are "shocked" at this happening to such a "prolific gamer" shows that his puffery is still working on many. We're talking here about a guy who hasn't had a single "world record" score properly adjudicated since the 1980s... if ever. We're talking here about a guy who shows up to competitions and doesn't play, yet talks to any camera there about how good he is.

I was once a strong supporter of him, too. It bothered me that I'd somehow never heard of this "superstar player" in the early 80s over guys like Eric Ginner, but I looked past it. There was a movie about him and all... and a nice old man who vouched for him... and Billy was nice enough to send some hot sauce to the birthday party for one of my friends and all.

But as I do with anything, the more interested I become, the more I research something. I wanted to know more about Billy Mitchell's story, so I dove in and looked for it. And that's when I started to find that things didn't line up.

I started asking questions almost a decade ago now. Where DID all those Donkey Kong Junior scores higher than Billy's go anyway? Why WERE the rules for Pac-Man changed to allow extra lives just before Billy played the "perfect Pac-Man"? Why can I not find any competition results for him? Where did his Centipede record that got him into LIFE Magazine go anyway?

Answers didn't come. What did come, however, were phone calls pushing me to write articles about Billy, even so far as to try and dictate to me what to write. Then came the pressure on us at Twin Galaxies to accept and celebrate a Donkey Kong score that danced around every adjudication rule there was. His threats toward David Nelson still stand out to me all the time. Then the pressure to play ball or be found in violation of a non-disclosure that would have cost me my Twin Galaxies paycheck for working an event.

Then came the regret. Then my resignation from Twin Galaxies after I lost most of that pay anyway. Then came more.

I called out the questions I asked above. I called Billy out when he yelled at and belittled then-International Video Game Hall of Fame President Liz Bolinger when she refused to let him "help" the organization. I made sure people heard his candid remarks about her "crying her eyes out" when they were picked up accidentally from a Billy phone call while one of his friends was livestreaming.

Then came questions in my direction. Then came what seemed like intent to keep me away from things that Billy was close to. Then came his behavior to me in live situations where he couldn't keep me from, like when he tried to jump into any camera shot on me at the Noobz movie premiere red carpet... or the stunt he tried to pull at the Video Games Live Event after it by giving me someone else's ticket... or his rude behavior toward me at the Kong Off 3.

Basically, the more I questioned the Billy Mitchell myth, the more I began to be harassed. The more false rumors came in my direction. The more friendships I lost, either directly or indirectly, for "attacking Billy" for all kinds of made-up reasons than the real reason I kept asking those questions: My interest in the truth of the matter.

It leaked eventually that Billy was actually asking his friends to go after me on social media. Then it dawned on me how he's done this to many others before me as well. Basically, if you question Billy or his stories, they work to discredit you so that nobody listens to what you are trying to say. And it worked for a very long time.

But not this time.

Strength in numbers came along this time around. I applaud Jeremy Young for finding that smoking gun in Billy's tapes and doing the right thing when most would have turned a blind eye.

That caused Mitchell to reveal the true version of himself. He went on a low-level "talk show" to defend himself and spent half the time talking about himself and the other half blaming others - namely Dwayne Richard, Catherine DeSpira and myself - for the cheating accusations against him.

Then came him and his paid for pals threatening to publicly claim that other Donkey Kong players had allegedly cheated, quite literally unless they stopped supporting the allegations against Billy.

Then came the legal threats toward a 20-year-old YouTuber who got footage of Billy being asked the hard questions, only to point at someone else and practically sprint out of the room himself.

This time, there were just too many people for them to do the whole "rumors and discrediting" tactic on those calling him to the carpet. And now, the other shoe has finally dropped.

Do I feel validated? No. Even last night, one of Billy's rumor-mongers-for-hire was trying to push false accusations in my direction... just moments after he'd bragged about hanging out with Mitchell at an upcoming event. This doesn't erase the fact that people did that and that a lot of people still believe negative things about me and who I am all fed by the Mitchell machine.

But I do feel happy for video game history in general. After all, that is what this has been about for me this whole time. Mitchell's antics not only saw him earn money from appearances based on false narratives he created for himself, but it took proper historical credit away from others for ages.

Now the TRUE video game players of the 20th Century might actually get their due. We now have opportunity to put the spotlight on the true superstars of that early era... from Eric Ginner and Steve Jurasek to Jeff Peters and Donn Nauert to Steve Harris and Phil Britt and Perry Rodgers... and yes, to Dwayne Richard and so, so, so many others. People who actually played in and won tournaments... who went on to work in the video game industry.. even to found major magazines and develop games that we all loved and enjoyed.

Now the TRUE superstar players over at TG might get recognition for being the best... like Don Hayes, who accomplishes more in that space per year than Billy had legit in his whole life.

Most of all, now I can at least let it go. I have no reason to look back barring some reactionary response by Billy and the few who are still defending him. THE person who was re-writing video game history in his favor is now discredited... barred for cheating. Him and anyone close to him are now seen as the circus sideshows they always have been.

I do feel bad for Walter Day, who allowed Mitchell to use him as a mouthpiece to validate his lies for ages. That's Mitchell's MO, people... get OTHER people to talk for him as "proof". Day has never been anything more than a tool for Billy.

I do feel bad for those who've come to TG over the years thinking that they'll get "celebrity" status for record scores because Billy always did. Too bad Billy's was not only carefully faked and constructed... but that he always ensured that anyone who DID get the spotlight in that community would stay at least one step behind him at all times... no matter what.

Calling out Billy Mitchell for 7 years plus came at a price for me. I lost event bookings because him and my opinions on him. He's interfered or tried to interfere in many of my projects...or interjected himself into them. Me and my family have had to endure horrible harassment and lies in our directions over my interest in nothing more than truth in video game history. I'll never have some of those friendships again and even now that the source has fallen, some will always believe what they were told about me anyway.

So it is. If anything, there's an irony to this. Mitchell helped the most recent sale of Twin Galaxies to go down under what I felt were questionable tactics. He gained financially from it to boot.

And yet it was under that ownership that he finally got his karma.

"Work is for people who can't play video games"

Get to work, Billy.

What a colossal waste of time.  :lol

Then again, I'm just not a major competitive gamer. I will never know the allure of dominating a worldwide highscore list, or having a stadium worth of people watch me as I play against another fellow nerd.  :-\

Still, it's good to see justice be served. No point in being the first in such things if it doesn't actually mean anything.

THQ Nordic to swap participation at E3 for the 2018 FIFA World Cup

Vienna, Austria, April 13th 2018 – It is with great regret that we at THQ Nordic must report that we will be unable to miss a single moment of this great sporting event. Therefore, we will be forced to stay in our lovely Viennese beer gardens, blowing the froth off a couple, watching football and one or two cool press conferences on Twitch (looking at you, Devolver) instead of rocking it ourselves.

We have to admit, we are going to miss our 9:00 a.m. pint of beer in the „Ye Olde King’s Head“-Pub in Santa Monica, where they show all matches live, but with the World Cup being held in Russia, it would mean a 7:00 a.m. beer – that’s too early, even for Austrians, let alone the Swedes.

We are looking forward to presenting all our great upcoming games like Darksiders III, Biomutant, Fade to Silence, or Wreckfest, and even some unannounced titles for the first time at gamescom in Cologne, Germany and shortly after at PAX West in Seattle!

Are these actual titles of in-development games or just randomly generated words? If anyone knows, please report immediately to THQ headquarters.

Wreckfest is an actual game/tech demo. "Bugbear's Next Car Game"/Next Car Game was it's previous title. I don't know if that's what THQ is talking about, but that's been in early access for YEARS.

Bomberman R. Was it solid? Seeing as it's getting a PC port I seem to remember something controversial about it at launch for the Switch but a quick search can't find what it was.

Edit:

Also GOG seems to be promoting something with their user wishlists. Free random draws + highly discounted titles for the most-wishlisted titles?

Mostly my *ahem* “office” has weird ventilation issues, and gets hot as balls when my pc is running for an extended amount of time. The consoles are more bearable.
