Holy fuck, I don't think we appreciate just how fucked software development is right now. Today I decided to update my BIOS, because last week Gigabyte dropped a new BIOS update and I've been running on an unstable beta BIOS since the Ryzen 5000 launch.
By now I figured it would be safe. BIOS update went well, system rebooted but something was off.... my CPU fans had stopped spinning and the AIO pump had stopped too  :anhuld

Gigabyte software is kinda messy, so first I figured that perhaps I needed to update the Aorus Engine which controls the fan speeds and pump in Windows. I noticed that the fans would start when I booted but stopped in Windows, so that made sense.
I installed another CPU temp monitor... 50 C... ok, that's doable. Let's update the Aorus Engine.

It took 30 minutes.... and every minute the CPU went up 1 C... as a sort of ticking timebomb. Phew, that's done. Rebooted the PC and... nothing. No spinning, CPU idle at 60 C by now.
Oof yikes, this was getting dangerous. When your CPU hits 120+ C it's bye bye and you better start calling the fire brigade.

Removed the panels put it on its side, Loaded up the BIOS. CPU FAN FAILURE..... ooh shit. SYS FAN failure... oooooooh shit...
Manual controls didn't work, removing some HDD's and other devices to save some power didn't work.... CPU idle at 80C... 90C.... 100C.... FUCK

Pulled out an old 10 year old university laptop, downloaded another BIOS and put in on an USB. Apparently they had pulled this one but not for every region.  :doge
Some guy on Tweaktown has access to pretty much all Gigabyte BIOS versions and beta's. As I knew F10 was also broken and I had just tried F11... F11p seemed to be the best fit.

But stressing the CPU too much without cooling would obviously melt it....
Removed the panels, put 2 fans next to the PC. Opened all the windows, turned off any heating in the room. Ambient temperature 5 C... ok, let's do this.

Flashed it... took forever... PC rebooted, update bar slowly filled up... no CPU fan activity. Update done, another reboot.
bzzzzuuuuwwwwwmmmmmm. Back in business with a more stable BIOS and a mild heart attack. :rejoice

Re: tall vampire hat lady in Resident Evil Village

Wasn't the "big-cheese" of the village in Re4 also an extremely large humanoid? Wonder if theres any connection (I know he wasn't a vampire, just a special kind of los plagas infectee). Just saying theres some precedent here.

The vampire lady character design is brilliant and I'm on the hype train :hyper

Still not sure whether Itagaki is actually a good game director or if just got lucky once with NG/NG:B and even failed a bit trying to just iterate on it with NG2.

NG2 just lacked polish, which NG1 also did, which is why we got Black.

I'm shocked. Figured he was on his way to living a more quiet life smoking and drinking in the background and not building a new studio. I wasn't even aware he left Valhalla Games in 2017  :o.

Expanding on that tweet:

https://www.gematsu.com/2021/01/dead-or-alive-and-modern-ninja-gaiden-creator-tomonobu-itagaki-establishes-itagaki-games

The article also contains the interview that Itagaki posted on Facebook.

edit: Also, wtf? Gematsu is all just one person now (looking at the "about us")?  :lol I mean I don't remember the history of the site, but hmm. More power to the one guy though if he's all solo over there.

Eh, I like NG2 but I think it's a worse game for the most part. The dismemberment stuff is fun, but I remember the levels being pretty sucky and a lot of crap bosses compared to NG1/NG:B.

I agree it's worse, but i think it's mostly due to lack of polish, as i said.
The dismemberment mechanic was great, i think a potential NG2 Black could've fixed most stuff.

Besides, i think the levels in NG1 weren'0t all that great, the platforming in those games is just bad, and all that fucking swimming.  :-\

Ninja Gaiden DS was also really good. And didn't people like DoA for the gameplay too?

Either way, the guy seems more and more like a Denis Dyack situation of scamming himself through random fundings without ever delivering anything again.

Its biggest draw is the off-the-wall script and setting. The game itself is very basic. I love the writing myself, but it's not for everyone.

Actually good.

That and Undertale were two similar games I thought would be overhyped, but both are fantastic even with the hype.

There's one spot in Earthbound that I still remember fondly.

I liked Mother 3 a lot too.

I bought the game when it first came out and dropped it, it felt super dated at the time compared to its contemporaries (CT, Lufia 2)... then went back and replayed back in 2007. If you like surreal humor and charm, well Earthbound definitely has it. But the gameplay was dated even back then, with weird balance issues and some super long and confusing dungeons. The final boss is really awesome, though.

I liked Mother 3 much more, the story was more poignant and gameplay more polished. The original Mother (Earthbound Beginnings) is a grindfest lacking the charm of the others but an impressive (especially for NES) seamless overworld.

In a vacuum Sigma 2 is fucking awesome. It’s what I first played, and had a really good time.

Then I played the OG and realized how much of a joke it was.

They completely gutted the enemy encounters (numbers and health), how projectiles work (no bow or Shiruken UTs), no more blood and gore, and they “streamlined” the level-design to oblivion.

The shit they added was mostly awful. A shitty slow cannon for Ryu. The female characters and their levels are just not that fun. And the co-op mode they added is basically unbeatable without exploits.

Only good change I can think of is being able to strafe while aiming the bow, but since the bow is nerfed to being useless, that’s not saying much.

On the other hand, I personally prefer Sigma 1 to Black. They cut out most of the dumb and unfun tedium from the levels, the graphics look nice in proper HD, being able to shoot the bow without aiming is a god send, and the ability to use items using the d-pad is a nice QoL change.

Not as fun as 2, but still fun, and it cut some stuff that, in my opinion, is better gone than not.

Cyber Shadow releasing in a few days, being published by the Shovel Knight studio and with music by their go-to composer. It seems more like an era-appropriate tribute without the same blend of modern gameplay touches which were part of what elevated games like Shovel Knight and The Messenger (or else what's been shown hasn't highlight such things). That said it's developed by just a single dev/artist which is cool. Will wait for player impressions I think.

I tried the Disgaea 6 demo. I hear it runs like total shit on Switch, like 20fps -_-;; and 30-60fps on PS4/PS5. Only tried it on PS5.

Skipped all the story stuff, so was just checking out the move to 3d. Total meh. Looks like ass like PS2 3d srpgs. Also on super quality mode it still runs like 20fps on PS5  :lol  That takes skill to pull that off on a game that looks like this. Guess they're supersampling or something. It does look clean.

At the end of the day, if you play this you'll probably just turn all the animations off and move speed on maximum and it'll pretty much look/play the same as 2d Disgea mostly. Seems like a lot of extra work for the team to jump to 3d and nothing really gained at all. I guess this is future proofing, but considering their sprites in D4/D5 were pretty good and future-proof they could've just kept re-using those.

Anyhow, guessing it'll bomb and N1 will be done with srpgs for good at this point. It's been what, 5 years since Disgaea 5? And they used to make a yearly srpg. At least their other stuff is pretty well received lately. Someone on Era said the second entry in their Etrian Odyssey style dungeon crawler that just came out is really good. I picked up the first one on a Switch sale and will try it one of these days.
