Don't crunch your devs, but also you should have the final code to us months early so that we can play at a leisurely pace while stirring up drama on twitter 4 hours a day. It's tough work formulating an opinion after all.

As a WGA hopeful, I continue to desire unionization for all my creative brethren in the gaming industry.

I don't have much extant sympathy for game journalists but forced long hours sucks in all industries.

What kind of question is that? Of course I'd shoot them. Even without the achievement. It's the more interesting option.

The dev'd probably fold like 2K did with Bioshock Infinite. They gave you the option to throw a ball at an interracial couple and then they pulled their punches by having the game stop you from actually throwing the ball. Some weak ass shit. It's obvious it's the bad choice, so I'll call it. Put your cards on the table.

Google, Amazon, the johnny-come-latelies have NO DAMNED idea how to make and sell games. Or how long it takes to be successful.

It's amazing that Microsoft figured it out. Doubly insane that SONY did so well in the space. Right place, right time, to some degree.

A bit disappointing that it doesn't have my favorite WB game on there (Dragon's Trap), nor the autorunner/shooter hybrid Monster Lair. The Sega Ages MW collection for PS2 is still the definitive compilation imo (that even has the Game Gear ports of the WB games :O).

I don't think GP can save this game, as bad as people are saying it is.  Sounds like it'll fit nicely next to Dark Alliance.

SE will be shocked when AAA Forwoken underperforms too.

SE has pretty terrible management but good dev teams.

They luckily get by on established IPs because of this. But they're forever gonna be fucked on new IPs. Chaos is gonna outsell Forspoken for sure. Souls games sell, Nioh sells, FF sells even if it's dudebro aesthetic. Forspoken could be cool (I'll give it a shot for sure) but it's an unknown.

Oh and SE has the worst fucking marketing. Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy, Babylon's Fall, Forspoken have all had awful showcases pre-release. I feel like the reason Stranger has fared better with demos and job breakdown videos is all on Koei Tecmo. Even mainline FF games like 15 were all what the fuck is this game like pre-release. Just the worst marketing in the game industry.

Looking at the reviews, good chance Babylon's Fall will be the worst reviewed game of 2022 from a non-indie studio. You don't see games getting 1/5s that often.

Between this and Avengers it's kind of amazing how much this is a story of a greedy corporation that wanted to get in on that GAAS $$$ but had no idea how to do it and didn't care about making a good game first and adding GAAS second, and now they are bombing one after another.

With any luck this will scare SE enough to stop all future attempts at GAAS games.

Has all the talent jumped ship or something, it kinda seems like their games stopped mattering around the same time Capcom got hot again :thinking

Yeah, Platinum Games is a mess and probably doomed. MS buying them is not at the point where MS has to even wonder if they're worth it and if they'll be able to make quality games for MS.
I'd be surprised if Kamiya doesn't retire if the studio goes down. Seems too set in his ways to start a new studio or go work for someone else at this point.

I think when they got booted from that Granblue Fantasy game and their work was scrubbed was the most telling thing. Like that isn't normal at all.

I liked Astral Chain, it was a tiny bit clunky and tough to control but the aesthetic and music were amazing. Nier Automata is one of my absolute favorite games of that gen, but how much of that is because of Yoko Taro's direction plus a competent team?

In other more positive SE news, at least Triangle Strategy seems to be doing pretty well in reviews and interest.

Babylon's Fall looked pretty bland and uninteresting, and the GAAS stuff is the shit icing on the horsemanure cake.

Yeah, Triangle Strategy reviews are solid. Sounds story-heavy, more cutscenes/visual novel than gameplay ratio, but most people like the story.

It seems quite weird how after the biggest seller their work suddenly dried up, when they were at least cranking out semi decent (or so I gather) licensed shit for Activision for a while to pay the bills before that.

Why Platinum and SE/Taro didn't immediately jump on a Nier 3 following Automata's success is beyond me. Game only got greenlit like a year or two ago and who knows if Platinum is even involved this time.

Maybe after how surprising of a hit Nier Automata was, they became more open to experimental titles. Which is actually commendable? Unfortunately, from Silent Man to that Front Mission spinoff (too lazy to google the name), it was all disastrous crap. And now this.

e: That card game written by Taro is supposed to be good. For some reason that's the one they pushed the least.

The card game, Voice of the Cards, is just supposed to be alright. Pretty shallow & easy and was slow until they patched it. Also not much of Taro's weirdness coming through. Unfortunately it came out around when Dungeon Encounters came out and that was supposedly much, much better. Maybe Voice of the Cards 2 which is out soon will be better.

After Automata Taro & SE went after the mobile gacha $$$ crowd instead of doing Nier 3. Maybe it worked out for them, no idea if it was a successful gacha. But it definitely didn't help Platinum by not moving into a sequel with them.

But why would it? They have a very successful GAAS game with Final Fantasy XIV.

And why I think the very premise of the Avengers does not lend itself to GAAS in the quasi Diablo loot mold that GAAS seems to take. It's not like they were the most greedy company. They did want the new characters and story content to be free. Which was a good idea.

Square is just a bizarre company. I honestly think they are probably the best they have been in years. The FF series is in a better place. A good online installment that people love. A AAA Remake that I think really kind of proved FF still has it. And a promising new installment. DQ is in a good place and has an exciting future. They seem to care about their catalog and are bringing back a lot of old games. Either through remasters or remakes, and plenty of them seem to be of quality. They are also putting out some decent smaller titles. I mean everyone trusts and likes Yoshi P, but how long until Tomoya Asano produces a mainline FF? It can't be much longer, I say 17 is their game.

But then they make choices that everyone can see are going to be failures a mile away.

Yeah, a Diablo Loot game for pre-established Marvel characters seemed pretty dumb to me. People really just wanted honestly the AAA "real" version of those Marvel Lego games.

A GAAS game from the people who made Anarchy Reigns and whose fans crave strong mechanic-focused single-player games wrapped in Japanese aesthetic that appeal to older fans. Yeah, who could have seen that failing?

Next up to join the failures is the very western-looking and targeted AAA PS5 "RPG" that seems to be connecting to no one. Again, I'm sorry Square people want you to make JAPANESE RPGs. And I bet a decently budgeted AAA very Japanese-looking jrpg would do better than whatever Forspoken will do.

But Square seems to like having at least one failure every year.

I think when they got booted from that Granblue Fantasy game and their work was scrubbed was the most telling thing. Like that isn't normal at all.
Honestly, I don't know about that. I feel like Cygames is a bunch of hot air in the console space. They've talked big. They've hired all this "talent" and what do they have to show for it? A port of Zone of the Enders 2 that I'm sure Konami was like "we don't have to do anything for this right?". Another anime fighter from Ark? Platnium may have some problems, but I'm willing to bet something is up with Cygames. I don't think their big jump into the console space has worked at all. I'm waiting for that to all fall apart.

But Babylon's Fail is such a bizarre game. Announced early and took forever to be shown off. When it finally was it failed to gain any traction at all. Again, this is not the type of game that any Platnium fan or Japanese game fan was asking for.  Yet it's also a Playstation exclusive so clearly, Sony probably exchanged some money for it, and yet they don't seem to have any real interests in it. On top of that Square is releasing it the same day as their niche turn based strategy game that has been way better marketed and gained actual hype since its announcement.

I'm with you, I have no idea why they just didn't have Platnium go directly into Nier 3 or have them make some other action RPG. This is really what Platnium should have been working on. "Oh our flashy combat is hard to grasp, whatever just level up".

Hell, I've said that Scalebound should have been repurposed into a Drakengard game. Even if it sucked, it would still probably better than any other Drakengard game.

I did a survey on RE on what 2022 SE game people are looking most forward to and was shocked to see #2 was Forespoken. But I think that was non-RPG fans voting for it, most RPG fans I know think the game looks really bland and westernized. To me it's kinda worrying how, 2 months from release, we don't really know much about the gameplay and haven't seen much beyond some huge, empty (although pretty) environments, the lead character and presumably lead villain, and the opening to a western-penned isekai storyline. I'm hoping it comes out good, because there just aren't really that many fresh new AAA RPG ip's, but I think it'll be mediocre.

Thankfully RE got their #1 pick right... Live A Live Remastered. :rock

A Vagrant Story remake would probably cost less and do better.

I don't understand why Japan doesn't understand what to do in the western market. They aren't going to be GTA or Call of Duty, but they can make games that easily sell millions by just being Japanese. That's what western gamers want, they want Japanese games to be Japanese.

But that dosen't just mean be anime.

Japanese takes on dark fantasy like Souls or Berserk can do well.

Japanese takes on crime dramas like Yakuza can do well.

Japanese stylish action games like Devil May Cry can do well.

Japanese takes on American GI Joe shit like Metal Gear Solid can do well.

All those ips and series don't look like Dragonball, but still have Japanese aesthetics and sensibilities. And even then anime is more popular than ever, but there's also an audience for Japanese stylings that skew older or at least avoid the animu sterotypes.

Be yourself Japan. Something like Forspoken feels so aimed at the west it hurts. At the end of the day, there's no gurante on anything. Maybe Forspoken will be a good game, but I think Square letting there Japanese side make a modest AAA jrpg that does not have to appease teenagers would wow people.

I hope Final Fantasy XVI kind of fullfills my desire for this.

But I'm not sure why Square doesn't get this. They have had much succsess in the west making very Japanese games. Games that I've always seem to be a cut above just typical animu garbage.

i'm not going in the Elden Ring thread because i'm a spoilerphobe but it really has made it clear that all these past years of me thinking i'm completely over open world games and basically AAA single player games in general, never been able to clock more than a half a dozen hours in before having it sit idle and unfinished my steam library for eternity, is actually just because 99% of big titles are soulless artless busywork focustested corpo wank and need to fuck off forever. it takes a game like ER which has completely consumed me like i'm 14 getting ocarina of time for christmas to really bring that home.
