The 2DS XL came in and it's a beauty. Especially this Lime Green edition.

Also did some last minute shopping on the eShop, Radiant Historia, Soul Hackers (only 4 Euro!), Devil Survivor 2 (only 4 Euro!), and Liberation Maiden.
Now looking into some physical buys that I missed out on back in the day like Majora's Mask and Mario Kart 7. Already found both at a decent price.

3DS overall seems fun and easy as far as collecting goes, most games aren't that expensive yet, some can still be found new. The small boxes don't take up much space.
Since it's not that old you don't have to worry about broken cartridges or batteries either.

It's weird, back in the day I mostly ignored the 3DS and focused on the Wii U once that dropped but looking back the 3DS is a much, much stronger system.
It did take them until this 2DS XL to make it comfortable though. The ergonomics on the New 3DS XL are poor and the original was just ridiculous with the Circle Pad attachment.
Even without the Grip thing the 2DS XL is a 100% improvement on that front. Also got lucky with the Screen Lottery. It's a TN but very accurate colors even at the highest brightness.

It was an open heart surgery but I've succesfully managed to transfer all my saves and files from the New 3DS XL to the 2DS XL.  :whew

Even had to carefully remove the back cover of that pristine Metroid 3DS  :notlikethis

This talk, along with the suboptimal Citra emulation, got me looking for my 3DS. Have a regular XL and hacked New 3DS. Yeah. The ergonomics of these things suck and I’ve never been a fan of the analog slider going back to the PSPs. But I like how compact it is and with the micro-usb adapter, there’s not much to take around. Might play the Kirby games and the English patched EX Troopers.

That's just one bit that sucks.

I almost fucked up. I did the system transfer from the New 3DS XL to the 2DS XL but I forgot about the SD Card.
The only way this works is to take out the SD Card form the source system before you do 'anything'. As doing the setup always wipes your SD Card.
If you put the old SD Card in the system you want to use, you can use your old saves.

If you want to use a new bigger SD card, you have to copy everything from the source SD card to your PC and then move it to the 'new' SD Card.

I'm gonna join the jailbreak scene in the next couple weeks for my 3DS as well. I have a second (regular) 3DS but the screen is busted. Maybe I can sell it off to someone for parts, get whatever money I can out of it.

From what I remember, it was easy, and probably got easier since then. When I was backing up my Wii U, it had guides showing newer and easier methods by the year. All I had to do was drag files on an SD card and visit a website on the Wii U browser. Annoying part was unpacking all the games added. Not unzipping. Literally the animation of a gift box opening to add a splash of whimsy to digital games.

late edit..

Updated the hacks. It’s indeed very easy. About 10 minutes? excluding the safety back up step.

The realest question.  I will burn down every inch of the Netherlands if the game is remastered without any improvements made towards the random battle frequency.

Was torn on Legends and never played it.  Heard that the OST was horribly compressed, which is a shame, but heard the encounter rate is better/less excruciating.

I have both, but not a huge inclination to replay either of those versions if a remaster is truly on the way.  Of course, remaster of Skies has been rumored for ages so I'm not holding my breath.

Desperately need them to remake this shit and include the custom soundtrack. I remember dumping a bunch of hardcore techno into that shit and then instead of playing the game, we'd just play coop and beat the other team to death which also gave you a win.

The writing is amazing, but the gameplay is a mess sadly. It was kinda worth it, seeing it through to the end, but it can be really really tedious.

Did some more GPD Win Max 2 testing.

At 18w TDP:

-Gotham Knights ran at 60 FPS at 720P on low settings.  50-60 when on a bike.
-Elden Ring ran at 45-50 FPS on average at 720P/low.
-KOF XV ran at 1080P 60 FPS with all settings on high.
-Soul Calibur 6 ran at 720P 60 FPS with settings on medium/high- this was the default; need to try 1080P and higher settings.
-DOA6 ran at 1080P 60 FPS with low character shadow resolution and low effect quality.

At 28w TDP:

-Elden Ring ran at 55-60 FPS at 720P/low!
-Cyberpunk 2077 ran at 34-45 FPS on average with some dips at times at 720P/low.  Should be able to get it to run a bit better with some tweaking.
-Persona 5 Royal ran at 60+ FPS at 1080P/high settings.  Framerate was anywhere from 62-100 FPS.  Looks amazing on the screen.

Really impressed with this thing,

Some more GPD Win Max 2 impressions:

[close]

Decided to return it.  Booted it up this morning and had Steam open.  The right side of the screen started going haywire and doing "ghost inputs" (it's a touch screen).  Looked this up and found some other people reporting the same thing.  Discord said it could be drivers, or maybe the charger, or maybe it was a hardware issue.  I rebooted and it seemed OK, then it happened again.  The place I got it from offers a 30 day return policy and I'm still under that, so going to send it back to them.

Picked up an ASUS Zephyrus G14 instead.  It's a lot bigger, but it was also cheaper and the performance is better.  No more GPD for me after this, I swear!

G14 impressions:

spoiler (click to show/hide)
[close]

Don't have any problems with this laptop and the price was fantastic, but I decided to get the ASUS Flow Z13 2023 model instead.  It's what I wanted in the first place and the performance is 60% better than last year's model.  Seen some videos and the 4050 runs games really well at 1440P even while keeping thermals low.  ASUS appears to have fixed all the issues the 2022 model had.
:leon

ASUS ROG Flow Z13 2023 impressions:

No 'it's gone' GIF this time! This shit is fire I'm keeping it!
[close]

I was seriously expecting to be sending this right back and getting the G14 back or possibly the Acer Predator Triton 300 SE (both are still on sale for amazing prices), but I was happily wrong- the new Z13 is AWESOME.  Incredibly impressed with the 4050 mobile.  Running everything at 1920x1080 or 1920x1200, I have tried:

-Elden Ring: Ran at high settings at 60 FPS
-Wo Long: Ran at mostly high settings at 90-120 FPS
-Call Of Duty Modern Warfare II: With DLSS enabled for performance, I got 130-140 FPS in multiplayer!
-Cyberpunk: With DLSS enabled for performance, 80-100 FPS
-Control: Also DLSS; got 80-90 FPS
-Resident Evil 4: 80-100 FPS with the settings on performance

And this was without adjusting settings.  Absolutely blown away by this thing.  It doesn't even seem to be running very hot.

Closer to $1000, although a larger company like ASUS can afford to sell it cheaper unlike all those smaller companies, so maybe we'll get a nice surprise there.

The XG Mobile that you can connect it to is what's expensive.  The new one with a 4090 (mobile) is $2,000 by itself!  The last-gen version with a 3080 is around $1,000 on sale right now IIRC.

Seems like a neat gadget but I don't see how Asus is going to make this stand out from the competition other than price and maybe performance?
And at the prices these not-laptop tablets cost, you're usually better off buying a notebook instead.

The Steamdeck has the advantage that it's way cheaper than any notebook with the same gaming performance.

Finally there is the battery life, the Steamdeck is just about acceptable at 2 - 3 hours in most situations but it can be far less in demanding games. Nintendo obviously has everyone beat on that front.
All the extra leds and things on the Ally look nice but are just going to drain the battery more.

What I’ve seen of other handhelds, to use a shallow comparison, is a PS4 to PS4 Pro difference. It’s not nothing. But they’re not hitting the next standard in a way to justify the cost, for me. It’s cool to see other companies jumping in it and the rapidly evolving market.

I will say, it is kind of the most unexpected twist in recent years that a Linux-based gaming device is competing so heavily with native Windows-based gaming devices. Good on Proton/DXVK/etc for actually being mature enough to be viable.

Falling into my seasonal super sci-fi shmup phase again.  What's the general take on R-Type Final 2?   Snagged Dariusburst Chronicle Saviors on sale.  Raiden IV Director's Cut is only $7 also, but read it's not that great.

Really wish they'd remake Thunder Force 3 & 4.  Saw this rendition on reddit and I want this almost as much as Dragon's Dogma 2!  :lawd

It's a noticeable performance bump- The GPD Win Max 2 was letting me play games at 1080P/60+ FPS that the Steam Deck could only do at 720P/30-40 FPS.

But I'd still say the PS4 Pro comparison works.  While it's nice to have better resolution and performance, if a game runs well at 40hz/40 FPS on the Steam Deck, the performance feels incredibly smooth and it really doesn't matter.
