Hey, wouldn't this effect game development too?
Quote
Debug units unworkable due to endlessly looping error message

Various developers and studios are claiming that their debug PS3 units are failing from suspected internal-clock-related hardware errors.

A multitude of debug consoles – crucial to the development of current PS3 projects – have been thrown into a rebooting cycle, due to an endlessly-looping error message.

It just means they will have more time to work on 360 games.  :dur

So how does Sony intend to fix a hardware issue over the internet when the console itself can't connect? hmmmmm

It's not just a borked firmware.

Wait, so there's no way to correct to get a new system update?

It's not a firmware bug. It's a problem with the system clock on the old non-slim models. They cannot connect to PSN for updates, so even if Sony pushed a firmware update out there would be no way for people to download it to their system.

Just as an FYI you can actually download and system updates off a USB drive; that's how I usually update since the PSN server's always slow as hell.

Of course I don't trust the average PS3 consumer to even understand how to do this.

You can actually still connect to the internet on the PS3 and check for updates. You can't connect to the Playstation Network which is separate.

Still doesn't justify this massive screw up on Sony's part.

I don't think that's true, actually.  Updates to games still work.  You can still download patches and, I assume, firmware updates.  I don't think it IS the firmware, but people could still download updates if they needed to.

There is still some connectivity!

This is an non-issue as replacing the CMOS battery already fixes this.

So we can now laugh from it:

Replacing the battery requires a recall for most.

Resetting the clock is not the same as what happens at midnight. We don't know what happens at midnight yet, but it sure isn't the clock resetting. It may fix the problem, it may not.

I will gladly join the 360 team if someone sends me one. I chose my system for this generation. I made my bed and have to lie in it. No hatred towards Microsoft or anything, I just can't justify buying another console, even if it has tons of stuff I'd like to play. I already buy enough stuff as it is, having another system to buy tons of games for would just cause arguments at home.

Well the gist is that the ARM SYSCON CPU that is used to power up the front panel of the ps3, that is responsible for doing things like sleep mode, eject, RTC etc. Is an old batch that sony picked up from the shelf like other manufacturers that has that calendar year bug regarding feburary 29th on certain periods. Causing the ps3 system clock and the real time clock to desync, messing up security measures like Digital Rights management software and sometimes games that relies on clocks for whatever reason. As well as signing up to the playstation network... This CPU is always on even when your PS3 isn't plugged
This problem is also happening with various of test Ps3 models, particulary the ones that has the emotion engine cpu/gpu for ps2 dev.

Quote
The Slims ps3s aren't affected because they use a newer up to date revision on the syscon cpu that fixes this bug.

A quick way to fix this is to remove the RTC battery for at least 5-10 min and plug it back in, you will see the date and time reset, and voila...

BTW all this was quoted from some ps3 hardware gurus and tested by various of peeps on efnet, all thanks to them for the information

One cannot wait to hear Sony's excuse for this one, They might play innocent for using off the shelve parts and blame manufacturers

In all seriousness this will probably be fixed soon. I'm riding along the laugh train with the rest of you but it seems pretty likely this issue will either fix itself once the day rolls by (i.e. the system no longer believes its the 29th) or Sony will put out some sort of patch-fix.

I'm far more interested in what kind of apology Sony will put forth.

From what was posted earlier in the day the clock can't be written to for security reasons, so either it fixes itself at midnight (entirely possible) or Sony has to figure a way to update the clock manually. People have said that it can't be done via firmware

RRoD means your system is out of commission for weeks as it goes through the coffin-and-return. It also impacted the 360 for years and years of manufacturing.

This is, what, 24 hours and it'll be cleared up? It's hilarious and ridiculous and incompetent and :rofl and all of that, for sure, but it's not as bad as - or God forfend, worse than - the RRoD. Let's be real, here.

Are people really freaking out this much? If it's related to a time bug, it'll be the GMT that it is all calculated from.
PST is GMT-8, so that's why they are saying wait until 4 PM, where it'll be March 2nd at GMT +/- 0 and no longer affected.

I figured that much. It's conflicting with the time calculation elsewhere in the system, hence the date reset.

Although this brings up a good question, when was the last PS3 firmware update? We're ridiculously overdue...
