thing that sucks of the day:

was cleaning the oven trays in our sink when i noticed my foot was getting wet, i thought i was perhaps being a bit too vigorous with the washing so i look down to see how bad it is only to watch a small river of water leaking from beneath our sink.  turns out the drain pipe from the sink was old and rusty and brittle as fuck and two inch large chunk of the pipe fell out causing water to flood my kitchen.

landlord can't replace it until tomorrow.

One of our cats used to pee in the bathroom sink and it eventually corroded the brass drain and tailpiece  You must be in an oldish house for it to have galvanized plumbing.

also a month ago our bathroom sink had a similar issue.  it makes me somewhat paranoid about the rest of the pipes to be honest.

Twenty cents! Man I'd just grab that sign for the hilarious antique value. Galvanized is a PITA, that's for sure. It pretty much rusts from the inside out. Better than the lead pipes it replaced, I suppose. In really old houses with lead piping, you have to run the water for 30 seconds before using!

It's a little unscientific, but you might be able to tell if a drain pipe is close to failing by tapping on it gently with a small wrench. Areas prone to rust perforation/excessively thin-walled pipe may sound a little different from surrounding pipe.

I'm a graphic design major but I like talking and reading about art and I like going to art museums but I sure as hell don't like to write about it. Haha...

My words a very clumsy in written form when I try to express complex ideas. 

edit: And I've visited only 3 museums in my area (upstate south carolina) but I believe the whole entire art department is taking a field trip to Chicago to visit some museums in the Spring. I don't know for sure though. That might change.

I had the same major and had art history, art critique classes. Writing a 15 page paper critiquing minimalist art movements has my pants a fire and my nipples hard.

I still have that 10 pound art history book and I still peruse now and then just to learn something.

Cherish it. It'll be more interesting experience than what people with pencil pushing accountin' and engineerin' jobs will ever do with their math and blahblahblah. Plus, as a graphic designer, you should be really studying what these guys and gals painted and why. The problem with many graphic designers is that they have zero artistic background nor talent, when the profession calls for both to be full rounded.

Having a computer problem.

I guess the processor is overheating, as I've checked the temp and it's always the GPU that goes up. It goes up anytime a game is played. Is the processor just going bad? The fans still work, I cleaned out the case, and applied some new thermal paste. The problem still persists and I don't really know that much about computers. This basicly means anytime I'm playing a game, it's bound to shut itself off. This problem was not here like a week ago.

I believe the heatsink is locked in. It's right on top of the processor I believe. I locked it back in after applying the thermal paste.

As for how high it gets. It gets to about 109 degrees Celsius before turning off.

Sorry if my terms are incorrect. Please bear with me.

I don't actually know which is which. According to Catalyst Control center, whenever a game is played the temp goes up.

According to Speed Fan, it's the GPU thats going up, while the core(I'm assuming the actual processor?) stays fine and is even better since applying thermal paste.

Of course in my stupidity I now realize that GPU of course means Graphics Processer Unit.

I feel stupid, but now I realize that is in fact that problem.  Which actually makes sense. It's fan was making a grinding noise, which according to a Google search means there may be a problem. Upon touching(I guess a bad idea) it is pretty hot. I guess I should have figured this was a graphics card problem since you know it's freaking ATI Catalyst Control telling me this temp.

I guess that means it's time to replace the card. I've actually done that before. But that was back on my really shitty old 2004 it's WoW time computer where it was simply a snap into a slot. Maybe it's the same now, but since my current computer is a pre-built wont that mean the power supply is'nt really built for an upgraded Graphics card.

And what kind of not too cheap but not too expensive cards do you guys recommend? I'm really just looking to play say Guild Wars 2 with modest settings.

My current:

AMD Phenom II X4 945 Processor
8 Gigs
ATI Radeon 4600 series

Yes, small cheapish fans like that use sleeve bearings that eventually fail. I wouldn't throw the card out quite yet, though. Those fans are standardized size-wise. You may be able to get a replacement from Newegg for a few bucks. Depends on the installation type and difficulty, I suppose.

If you do decide to replace the card, you'll need to track down the PCI-Express slot type in your comp, which determines the best card you can get. You'll also need to get the max wattage rating of your power supply; should be on the label on the side of the supply itself. If your supply is decent (400 watts),  you'll need to figure out how many supplemental power connectors available from your supply; more powerful cards need supplementary power in addition to what they get from the slot itself. I forget the name of the power connectors, unfortunately.

 - not WD40, as it is more solvent than lubricant) in the hole and put the sticker back on. Some fans have sealed bearings, though, so you might be out of luck.
You can also replace the fan; most are either screwed to the board or secured with plastic grommets. The fan should be in the 10-30 mm range; get measure all three dimensions and see what you can find on Amazon, Newegg or eBay. You should be able to get the card back into (temporary) service one way or another.

No problem! Just to be thorough, though, don't use 3-in-1 oil either. It's partly a penetrant like WD40. Get some sewing machine oil (sold in small bottles at Walmart) or RC car/hobby oil. In a pinch, you could probably get away with motor oil, just use less since it's typically more viscous than the required oil.

Well that's good to hear! You'll have to remember to do it every month or so. It's better for the bearing if you do it before it begins to grind again. If a few drops were enough then the fan should last long enough to get another card.
