I can't give much advice since if I remember correctly, you wanted to go into something related to illustration and I don't know anything about that graphic design stuff.

I can say that if you're taking the GRE, you don't have to study much. I mean literally a few weeks with maybe an hour a day to cover all the random vocabulary and probability problems you would need to cover. The analytical writing section is mostly just graded on word count, vocab complexity, and sentence variation so I submitted a total garbage nonsensical essay that made no convincing argument and got 92 percentile. My friend who's been doing drama writing for years got 40-something percentile. Yeah it's bullshit but easy points.

To be honest, success in life is mostly just luck but nothing is determined. Take a chance and try to do what you really want. What kind of jobs do you want to go into?

Queen it's about the CONTACTS not the knowledge.

For me, I wanted a masters in Musicology because I was in love with the scholarship of it. There's no money it (ergo, why I'm not doing it now) but that's the only thing. If I wanted to perform I wouldn't have considered wasting time in a Masters other than the sole benefit of the contacts I'd make.

Even in business, smart people going for their MBA don't go to learn anything, they go to make contacts.

It’s about skill. I’m going to school to learn the relevant skill. What you’re telling me is like telling someone who wants to be a lawyer “it’s about the contacts” without them ever having stepped in law school. My bachelors was in a separate field. I’m leaving that field and I need training.

If you don't have the skills you'll need it, but especially the arts you need to meet studio heads, art leads, etc, etc, you get that along with the skills.
You can get that from a good university. The difference between a top law school and the medium grade law school isn't the curriculum or the content, it's the contacts you make in the process.

Looking at japan too. If I can consider France I can consider japan. Problem with japan is lack of contacts. But if I got good enough to get hired by Ghibli I could use that as a way to get close to Disney. My dream scenario would be being taught in japan since the animation I want to make is anime inspired to begin with.

N3 to N2 shouldn't be too difficult if you put the work in. Besides, you need to be on N2 level if you want to actually communicate with people there on a somewhat fluent level.

That’s time away from portfolio work and Japanese requires dedication.

I think I’ve just decided to go all out and say fuck it and go for bachelors degree. From my research, my goal is the number one animation school in the country. Early deadline is December and I want to make it. I’ve researched their requirements and I think I can do it.

So I’m dividing up things into months on what to work on with my portfolio:

September - anatomy;
October - characters
November - personal work

Iconsidered quitting my job and moving in with the ‘rents to dedicate all my time to portfolio work but I need the job for materials.

The personal work thing works out great because I want to give paintings for Christmas. Is that a bad Christmas present?

It's a job I didn't want or apply for, but the HR manager and plant director asked me to do (I was previously a supervisor on the operations side). You can quit & work part-time too, you just need to be smart about your monthly expenses. The plan for right now, is once our house is paid off at the end of 2019, the wife and I will choose who quits their job to be a stay at home parent. Dismiss at your own risk. Puppy's correct, again, on this topic. Creative is the one place that still supports placement if you've got the skills, regardless of education. If you need to learn how to do it, that's one thing. If you can do it but want a degree to prove it, that's a waste of time.

Ironically, the Japanese placement is more likely to be an impediment. If a company lists a requirement here, they're more likely to follow that guideline despite common sense showing that the candidate can actually communicate.

Oh. I never said anything about needing a degree for anything. I know it’s all about skill. I just didnt get why puppy was telling “its all about contacts” when I don’t have the skills to do it. Like I’m not dismissing him. I’m just confused why he brought it up as if it’s the only requirement.
