Started a new job this week, working with a couple people I worked with before. It's a pretty crazy experience two days in, because while we aren't making the same thing we made before, we are using some of the same tools and its really easy to discuss what we should and shouldn't do because the others experienced the same thing.

It's also scary as fuck because they haven't hired the people who will be above me on the engineering chain yet so I have a lot of responsibility. I was kind of sad when I left my most recent job that I was stepping away from a role where I had a lot of input into things I cared about but within two days I've found that I have the same level, if not more, input into stuff and that is exciting (and still scary).

Anyone know a thing or two about living in Iowa? Particularly Des Moines?

Want to move north. I want a nice, snowy place with nature. I've considered heading back to New York but honestly the Midwest lifestyle really sounds like it'd suit me more. Plus I'm not about paying out my ass.

Nah. I still like civilization. I want a city that has lots of snow, creative artistic culture, access to nature, without the expense.

The people of Iowa also seem quite nice.

I've also considered Wisconsin and Tennessee (although not Midwest). I just want snow, cities, natural vistas surrounded by friendly faces and affordable places.

I've also thought about Michigan but when I think of Michigan I think of snooty white women for some reason. There's also the whole water poison deal.

Move to New Mexico, we got all of dat shit

Plenty of suburbs exist that aren't just flat sprawls of single family detached homes stretching as far as the eye can see. You can find natural beauty all over the country. You could also live just an hour or two away from it. No need to live in a "rural" area. I would advise against moving into an expensive city like New York unless you think you can get a good job there.

I never said anything about a rural area at all.

I live in Texas. In Texas the state is so big that travel is an issue. In order to find mountains, I have to drive maybe 2 days (literally) or more westward. Access to variety matters to me. The state must have variety of locale without much distance. I would ideally prefer to live in a city that also is in a state that is small enough where you could travel to various natural places and camp out. Not that I want to live in a "rural area" at all, which is the literal opposite of where I said I want to live.

- will be going freelance so I can live any fucking place I want so long as I can afford it
- PARKS. I miss Central Park :fbm :stahp

- isn't overly big city
- city MUST have avenues for artists

If you're thinking about Colorado but don't want the expense of Denver, what about Colorado Springs? Granted, it's definitely more of a suburban city, but it's not all that much smaller and is very close to some great nature places [Pikes Peak, Cheyenne Mountain, Garden of the Gods, Cripple Creek, Royal Gorge]. And you're within easy driving distance of Denver if you wanna catch a Rockies game.

Colorado is my number one pick but the state seems to be going bougie and very expensive which is why I looked at the midwest which tends to have similar ethos regarding politics and has just as much respect for natural beauty. New Mexico is also high on my list but it isn't as snowy.

I have considered CO Springs.

do note that co springs is one of the few cities in colorado without legal recreational weed. if you care about that.

also more conservative than the rest of the state due to the military presence but that doesn't seem to manifest itself much from what i noticed while there.

The entire state of Illinois is a suburb of either Chicago or St. Louis. The most of Indiana is a suburb of Indianapolis, Chicago, or Cincinnati. Ohio is a world of death where nothing escapes.

The areas not covered by those broad statements are literally empty. If you think the Mid West is all farm land and shit, you're wrong. There's nothing. There's land, but it isn't farm land. It isn't used for solar or wind energy. It's just...empty land where the only thing going through it is interstate/highways and the occasional truck stop for sometimes, literally, hours at a time. No cities. No towns. No houses. Just empty, unused land and roads. You can take I70 from Pittsburg to the West Coast and the majority of your trip will be empty land outside of a big city every 4-5 hours. You can switch to 44 somewhere around St. Louis and go through Missouri/Oklahoma/Arizona/NM/Texas instead and it is even more desolate.

Nothing there? Fantastic.

Becoming a pro photographer so one thing I'm really stressing is accessibility to varied environments. I love mountains. LOVE them. I want four seasons to play with visually. I want access to forest, hills, waterfalls, lakes, mountains. The midwest really sounds like the best place for me. Otherwise I'd just head to Colorado or New Mexico.

I'm thinking of going with Tennessee though.

Mountains.

Snow.

Low cost of living.

Lakes.

Respect for art and musical history.

Racism.

I once offered her a home, chained around the base of my toilet. Since I’ve become more respectful towards Cindi, I would like to upgrade that offer to let her live at peace in my nearly full-size closet. I’m pretty oblivious and a complete doormat and also prone to letting things slip out of my control, so this could be a real opportunity for Cindi.

Hm.

what about baltimore

I didn't consider Bmore because I figured Maryland would be very expensive.

I was right, but Baltimore is under Maryland's average.

Overall:

88.2 Bmore
113 Maryland
100 America

:obama

Housing:

49.4 Bmore
127.2 Maryland
100 America

They have beautiful mountains in the state, baseball, snow, lakes, take care of their people, and have a very, very distinguished artistic history. Baltimore also has a lot of stories: many good, many bad. It's also close to Washington DC and NYC. Bmore could be a good place to work as a photojournalist.

I know NorCal's beauty. I have spent entire summers there. The place is like home and partly why I have a mountain fixation.

And yes, the reason it's so low is because of gang crime. As you say, more opportunity. But not everyone is a desk jockey. More stories! :jeb

I dunno why you want snow so bad. It's fun too look at but if you have to live with it it's annoying. Ask Stro.

Cities in the bay area and the sacramento valley generally never get snow. Still, it can hit freezing and there are real seasons. Fall is very pleasant. Rainy winters.

Elevated areas (everywhere along the sierra nevada, mt shasta, sometimes mt diablo) get a lot of snow and they're very close by so my point was that when you need to get your fix you just drive up to Reno or Tahoe and get your fix.

The bay area has mild temperatures year round. Lots of fog. The hottest it ever gets in the bay is like 85.

Snow is another visual element to work with. Less variety to shoot. It's also beautiful.

I also like the cold and want a cold climate.

It's really the worst place in the world if I'm being honest. I've never hated anywhere I've visited more in my life. And I actually went to the Netherlands, a place that talks about the creation of the stock market as a source of national pride on tours to tulip gardens.

Perhaps I'm just a neoliberal subject but I find it refreshing to have a city wholly subservient to capital that doesn't pretend that it has a culture.

Or perhaps I'm just sick of a place that's the exact same (Orange County has not 1 but 2 corporate police states) but has the "good" stuff of our mode of production constrained by WASP monoculture because of legacies of power.

moved there in 2003 for my first year of college and paid the bills by selling timeshares out of the lady luck, which really is enough to make a terrible year right there. also lived in a literally falling apart shithole apartment with two others.

on top of that i also got in a very toxic relationship that involved cheating from both sides, her throwing many things at me, and at one point her ex coming to my crappy apartment with friends and guns to convince her to come back. so then i got her pregnant (of course) but lost the baby because we both were just taking a lot of drugs to mentally escape the shitty situation we got ourselves into.

luckily since i was taking complete nonsense classes just to get by like boxing and weightlifing and some stupid film study things i was still able to keep solid grades and near the end of that first year of college got an offer to come to college in new mexico with a transfer scholarship so i accepted it and almost immediately got busted for weed. :lol i ended up bailing on everything there on the day i was supposed to go to court (and the day before my birthday) to come to new mexico and i've been here almost 16 years now.

none of this really has much to do with the city but almost everyone there is a real piece of shit, including me when i was there. living there mentally takes a toll on you in a way i can't even explain.
