Saw a couple depressing things at work today. First was a 86+ yo guy who came in to have some extractions done. I've talked to him on the phone many times about insurance and stuff, but had never seen him irl. While on the phone he would constantly apologize to me if he didn't understand something, or forgot something, etc. I'd always be like "it's no problem sir, you have nothing to apologize for blah blah blah" and thought nothing of it; I figured he was just an old dude who was sensitive about being forgetful. Anyway he came in today for an hour and a half, and I heard him constantly telling the doctor "I'm sorry, oh my apologies sir, oh I forgot sorry" etc. I still kinda blew it off as him being sensitive.
At the end of his appointment his care worker came in to pick him up and help schedule his next appointment. I had to leave the side office to get some paperwork when I heard her yelling at him and saying stuff like "just stop talking, you asked me to handle this right? I thought so. No, I'm taking you straight home." I went back to the desk and finished up his scheduling and shook his hand. He seemed to be pretending everything was alright, and I just felt so shitty :'(
Then later in the day our deaf patient brought her son in for his appointment; he's three and already is good at sign language. She can read lips very well and seems super energetic, but I couldn't help feeling shitty thinking wow, she'll never hear him laugh or cry or anything.
