Hey PD, I had a doozy of a time at the dentist today.

Apparently my molar roots are extremely long, the guy who yanked, cut, drilled, and used strong suction to get a second molar out said they were the longest roots he ever removed and he had been at this racket for over thirty years. Cost me 92 dollars with 80% insurance. But that bitch is out and I'm on 10 mg Percocet, so all is well!

I set up my new plasma tv and I'm doing the videophile tv break in where I play a slideshow of color slides for 100 hours straight (meaning I leave the set on and can't use it until next wednesday) and then adjust the settings after all the plasma thingies have aged identically for 100 hours.

I think I'm getting suckered here, but oh well I can go a week without using a tv.  But man, my electricity bill...fffffuuuu I don't even want to think how much power a power-sucking plasma uses being on for 100 hours+ straight.

No, the whole point of this is to save money by not having to pay an ISF calibrator $300 to come out and personally calibrate your new set.

The idea is that by setting in the phosophers during the first 100 hours when they are prone to heavily change the EXACT same way as the pro settings guy; your tv will be 95% similar to his tv and if you apply his settings, you will get a 95% perfectly ISF calibrated set.  Then you just tweak slightly for the 5% that still differs because of lighting differences in where you have the tv and minor differences between the sets.

Whereas if you just watched tv for a while, your tvs would break in differently and his settings wouldn't be what fits your set and you'd need to pay an ISF calibrator to get near-perfect calibration.


I'm actually pretty big on calibration because I've seen the results over the years on multiple tvs before & after ISF calibration.  It makes the tv's 100x better; so if this is a way to get 95% perfect calibration without getting an ISF guy out...I'm willing to give it a shot.

In photography in particular, there are people with too much money that will use their expensive lenses to shoot brick walls just to see how it performs (brick walls due to texture and the subject being a flat field so you can judge lens performance easier) and there are threads on message boards bitching about the IQ and whats better and whats not. Instead of, you know, taking photos.
