Luckily what I said was pretty innocuous/factual and I was not a target of their investigation, but some of the stuff other people were saying? OH MY GOD. People, you really really REALLY need to be careful with what you say, no matter how reasonable it may seem at that time, or in that company. Change the context and it can be very hard to explain away.

Keep it verbal, if you're actually in the office. I try to stay respectful and professional until we're having an offsite lunch with beer.

Yep.  Everyone seems to assume/be ignorant to the fact that all that shit is monitored and recorded somewhere.  If you're using it as some sort of personal outlet you're bound to have something in there worthy of termination.

My employer has several words that trigger an investigation.  Obviously words like "fuck" or "cunt" would be flagged but the twist is that they will not reveal what the trigger words are.

Why people use Office Communicator/Lync is beyond me.  Avoid avoid avoid.

We're forced to use Communicator, too.  And thoroughly warned that those conversations are not necessarily private.  It is useful for ASAP business needs, but I generally just hunt folks down if they're stationed somewhere in the building.

I would say there is some of that, but the majority of it is trying to avoid lawsuits.  Women especially love to sue employers or at least make a big stink for "workplace harassment" and all of the suffering they supposedly went through.

I don't want you to think that I blame just women in general.  I blame anybody out to make a stink of things that are said in the workplace that have no meaning out of context.  Simply put, people are too lawsuit happy and it's taken its toll on people being able to have a personality in the workplace.

I don't think it's appropriate for ANYONE to sexually harass another person in the workplace.  But the lines between everyday talk (i.e. telling somebody they, "look nice today," and them reporting it as you saying you though their ass looked nice or that they were ugly every other day) and harassment have been muddied too far.
