From what time I've spent around STEM people, the idea of an even more STEM focused society makes me shudder.

Additionally, it way too often feels like STEM is championed because "technology will fix it" is an easier sell than "we will have to make changes as a society".

Had a dream so nostalgically depressing that I was late to work. I dreamed that I was at some type of event full of small tables everywhere. I began walking through the area when I passed a table where two people were sitting; one was a guy I didn't recognize, the other was a woman I faintly recognized. I gave her a weird "nod of half recognition" and continued walking until I exited the building. Outside the evening sky was dark, there was a windy breeze, and the faint sound of thunder could be heard. The woman called out from behind me, and I turned and recognized her this time: my old highschool/college former best friend, who I've discussed on the forum before. She had followed me outside, and asked why I had ignored her. I said I didn't recognize her.

We then began talking like old friends, and at one point she asked if I wanted to go to a football game. I was about to automatically say no when I hesitated and said yes. We made some more plans and then she said she had something to tell me, but would do so at the game. We went our separate ways. I began driving towards where the football game was being held, through a very bright street. And then I woke up.

The regret and sadness I felt upon waking up

Even though I know things probably wouldn't have worked out, given her religious views/connections...sometimes I still feel like we could have figured something out. I'd probably be happier if we were still at least best friends, with a chance of something more. But I don't see how that's possible now that she's engaged and has a kid.

I don't see it like that. I wouldn't meet her to ask for closure, I just want to catch up/see how she's doing/salvage a friendship. If we met it would be on platonic grounds, we both understand that. The awkwardness is moreso on my part anyway - I haven't really pursued talking with her or meeting with her because I wouldn't want her fiance to feel some type of way. But like I said, I've known her half my life so it shouldn't be a problem.

I won't deny that I have feelings for her and wish things had played out differently. Honestly I just wish I had tried. Because if I did, I know we would have at least dated. Instead I was scared that it could hurt our friendship, and thus rejected her.

But I understand the ship has sailed. If I was in a relationship right now...honestly I still think I'd want to reach out to her just to make sure she's alright. Because that's the type of relationship we once had, and the reason we aren't close today is because of me.

There was once a girl I really liked in high school who ran around in the same groups I did.  I was a fat loser so obviously I never bothered pursuing anything.  When I was 25 and back in town with my job, I looked her up.  She was still single, still looked cute, so I went for it.  I barely knew her but I thought "fuck it, go for it."  She was receptive and we went out for a couple of months.  It was a big mistake.  She was not really a good person, was manipulative, and she had no real ambitions or aspirations.  She didn't really want to do anything except bitch about her friends she's had since high school (my friends and friends of friends basically).  She was basically the stereotype of a townie girl.  I realized I was only in it for the possibility that my nostalgia and my fantasies from a decade past would come true but nope, it didn't.  So I had to break it off, which I did shortly thereafter.

Not quite the same thing with you but sometimes it's best to let some things lie.

I can't believe you guys are all so anxious to deny us a chance of hearing PD's stories about being "Rebound Guy." Those are the most epic and tragic love stories, and sometimes even end with the woman going back to her original guy, leaving Rebound Guy in even worse straits.

In F1 there's this weird phenomenon where scrubs end up driving good cars, Nico Nico is one such driver.

Usually they just stay as number twos, but if the fans are really unlucky they end up in the best car on the grid that season with an even bigger scrub as a teammate and win the driver's championship. (e.g. Jacques Villeneuve, Fernando Alonso) I say this as someone whose favorite manufacturer in the sport is Renault.

Haven't watched Bahrain yet, hope it was more exciting than the last race. Ending a Grand Prix under caution is a crime against humanity.

I'm more of a team / manufacturer supporter than a driver stan. I'll kiss the ring when people like Schumey or Vettel-sama dominate, though. This season I've been really impressed with Felipe Nasr, so if I had to stan for someone it would be him. Gotta get on that hype train young.

RE Ferrari: The current rules limit testing. Ferrari is great when it's able to just throw money / resources at a problem (for example, during Schumacher's reign). When it can't do that, well, the results haven't been so hot.

Also (imo) as a manufacturer it doesn't support other teams particularly well and that's an easy way to supplement a lack of testing. (Mercedes--again imo--is the opposite in this regard.)

There's also the fact that Ferrari the parent company doesn't manufacture low cylinder count or turbocharged engines and is just a bit out of its element in a turbo V-6 world.

They have a good design and it's difficult for other teams to catch up with the testing limitations. Ferrari is a lot closer than I thought they'd be all things considered.

Red Bull is a bit of a victim of its engine supplier atm. Renault seems a bit JayZEhhh.gif about the sport and one of Red Bull's pit leadership even called them out on being out to lunch just before the Chinese Grand Prix (iirc). At the end of the day it's hard to bounce back from losing a driver like Vettel too.

I'm not huge on the Williams but they have a Mercedes engine so they'll probably do better than most. Almost all English coverage comes to us from the British media and as a rule the British media is insufferable about British competitors--that's why I can't stand Hamilton and I dislike McLaren quite a bit.

Related: I'm so fucking glad Bradley Wiggins has stepped away from professional bicycle racing. Sadly Team Sky still exists, but at least I can snicker at the ra-ra Hail Britannia shite the team gets since they ride on Italian bicycles.

Just finished the race, he didn't bottle it, his brakes crapped out. Hamilton was complaining about his too on team radio at the end of the race, it seemed like they weren't quite up to task. Real shame for him, I thought he took apart Vettel-sama rather well at the beginning of the race; Raikkonen with the metronome performance was there to capitalize.

It's a cornball course, but I love watching the sun set on the Bahrain Grand Prix.
