Not having Facebook is like not having a cell phone: it's a major lifestyle choice that you will be forced to constantly defend. Might as well keep it and avoid some outrage/time wasting by modifying it a bit.

Yeah, I tried the no fb thing. I don't have an fb app on my phone, and haven't for a while. It's impossible to escape, but this at least allows you to not participate in its supreme vapidity and boorish mundanity without going through the drama of "why'd you delete your facebook?" "because it sucks" routine.

I tried the no Facebook thing a couple times too. My mom actually got mad at me for not "giving the family notice" I was deleting Facebook because "she couldn't contact me." I was like, "Mom, you have my phone number and email address."

I keep wanting to get rid of Facebook but decided to keep it around and simply not look at it more than 1-2 times a week, if that. I just check to see a few recent posts or send birthday wishes and that's about it. I find something about it very annoying and even stressful for some reason.

Honestly... it's really not. I haven't been back to FB in 4 months (I guess) and I don't miss it and no one questioned me for it either at work or with acquaintances. Probably because I'm kind of a shut-in (or secluded, private, hermit-like, introvert, pick your term) and I have the luxury of my SO managing the society part. It's definitely a potent tool for recreative social group activities, but having to sort out through the BS and unwanted interactions that constitutes 99% of what is Facebook is not really worth it in my opinion. I also am very skeptical of the use of more serious like social media like LinkedIn, but that one may vary depending on what career you pursue. I find the added value of all those social media to one's life in term of meaningful interaction pretty negligible.

It's the same here. I still have an account but it hasn't been used in a long time. If friends want to hang out, we usually just group text. It works a lot faster and works a lot better.

My personal experience is that after about five years, people generally stop using Facebook or go on once in a great while. I'm sure that's not the common experience but it's been my experience. At that point, you really don't care how many friends you have and you no longer care about updating your favorite movies, music, and books. Personally, I lost interest in people's daily minutiae because everyone I know is in a deep rut with their job. Now that I'm 30, I see a lot of constant updates about shit their children are doing. I couldn't care less about that stuff.

Facebook is trash and not nearly as essential as advertised. I know a lot of people who barely use it anymore. I tend to only use it to see how a couple folks are doing. If you're friends with me on there you know I haven't posted shit on my wall in ages.

As an example of how little I care now: I actually started accepting friend requests from family members. Back when I used FB I would reject those requests because I didn't feel like dealing with "what does that mean/hey who is that person/are you gonna be at Thanksgiving dinner/how do I fix my iPod" etc nonstop. But now I log in once every few days or weeks, mainly to creep on a couple people...
