If it makes sense to buy a house really depends where you live. One downside of not being a house owner is that you miss out on that passive $400k income. I felt like a was paying too much when I bought a house in 2017 but it has already turned out to be a great investment. And as long as you continue to be a house owner on the same market then it doesn't matter much if the prices go up or down. If they go up then my current house increase in value. If they go down then my next house will be cheaper to buy. It's only when you downsize or is forced to sell at a specific moment (e.g. because of a divorce) where you lose a lot of money.

This is actually the smartest thing anyone has ever said to me about buying a house that clicks.

My main concern is the house going down in value and overpaying, but you're right that if I sell a house at a loss, the place I'll be moving to will probably have taken even more of a loss or the same loss unless I'm downsizing.

I think the only long term thing you get screwed on is paying property taxes since they're based off the price you bought, so an extra $4k/year over time adds up to a decent chunk of change if you buy at the top of a market when a $400k house is $800k.

It sucks, but alternatively rents keep increasing and if you don't buy and rent over time you probably end up spending an extra $4k/year or something too (fuzzy math).

If I do buy sometime soon, I will miss my current neighborhood. It's very walkable and there's an amazing Japanese bakery, amazing Japanese sushi place and amazing Mexican taco place with the best Horchatas and very good NY style pizza place all within < 1 mile walk. But the housing prices in my neighborhood are insane, so I wouldn't be looking to buy a home near where I'm currently at.

Living in Orange County CA and looking at housing prices, basically everything in OC and north of OC spanning to LA (Long Beach) and north LA is crazy prices because that's where people want to live, whereas going south of OC towards San Diego (Oceanside/San Juan Capistrano/Mission Viejo) starts to get more reasonable but you live an extra 40 mins away from everything in OC and 2-3 hours from LA stuff. It's all pretty complicated -_-

My little fur baby got to finally come home today. After three surgeries, 2 transfusions, and 8 dialysis sessions later. MAX is happy and hasn’t lost a beat. Came home and immediately wanted to play, eat, and take a nap in his favorite chair. I took out a small fortune in debt to save him. His dry food was to blame for the e-coli infection and I’m moving forward with what needs to happen next. I got happy tears right now, I’m gonna spoil this cat good this weekend.

I was reading the era thread on scientists making human/monkey embryos to grow non-brain human body parts in monkeys for organ transplants and pretty much the whole thread was really upset including some posters saying the scientists should be arrested for being unethical.

I wonder if I'm weird in that ethics in science doesn't really bother me at all. Like clones and hybrids and stuff just seems like neat sci-fi to me. Go science!

There was a thread a few weeks ago about maybe being able to make Jurassic Park real with DNA cloning Dinosaurs, and also everyone was against it. Wtf, if we brought back dinosaurs that would be awesome. Go science!

Maybe I'm just weird. Science, as long as it's not making bombs and weapons of mass destruction, is pretty rad to me and I don't mind scientists playing god with stuff. But I'm not religious either so I don't think that's sacrilege.

I'm having a talk with a friend about tent camping. They're a little younger and have never done it before.

And it got me thinking. In the 90s and earlier, like when I was in HS, people used to go out and tent camp a lot. Girls were really into it and it was a way to get some alone time with your SO and also for illegal underage drinking. Like you watch 80s horror movies and everyone is tent camping.

But I feel like tent camping kind died out in the 00s? Like who goes camping in a tent these days? Last time I went camping in a tent was 20 years ago with an ex. Now people can get little cabins with actual toilets and electricity and showers and it's like a whole different thing.

Bebpo I remember camping a lot when I was younger and as times changed we started going less and less. I think the rise of the internet and the premium camping equipment brands rose together around the same time. With less people camping and those that did regularly desiring higher quality camping gear. Which ultimately leads to less people being able to afford camping in the first place.

Camping nowadays sounds like a lot of fun and would be if it weren’t for the people you see at the campgrounds nowadays. We went camping in the early part of the year and encountered a lot of whiny moaning folks who didn’t wanna get into the spirit of camping at all. It didn’t help that a few spots over someone had a starlink for mobile internet and an inflatable movie screen to annoy us. I feel like you’ve almost gotta go back to backpacking or something similar to really get the feeling of nature and the joy it can bring, sadly the missus won’t let me do that ever again.

Hiking/tent camping is pretty huge since it basically doesn't cost anything and you get to flex on Instagram like you're Paul Bunyan even though any dummy can do it. It's pretty big on YouTube and REI is always busy around here.

I went to Yellowstone last year and it was like $27/night for a reserved camping spot inside the park, the lodges that were still available inside the park were $250-$500/night. The only problem is reservations are usually taken six months in advance so you have to F5 and take what you can get on short notice or hope you get lucky with the first-come-first-served slots.

Anyone know the best way to get body odor smells out of computer chairs?

I am bad about sitting shirtless in my chair after workouts and over time there's a bit of that post-workout smell to the chair 24/7. I wonder if I just rub it down with some alcohol wipes if that would be enough. It's what I do on my yoga mat but that's a different material. I looked up instructions on my chair and it says use a rag with soapy water and dry but that's for actual stains which is slightly different. I just want to get the smell out of the fabric.

i had a much more embarrassing stupid scenario happen to me w the smell of chairs. i left a block of butter (and a few other groceries) sitting in the back seat of my toyota harrier. it has a fucking sunroof and the sun shone directly through it onto the back seat when i parked for a while before going home, melted the butter and it went all through the back seat. i've tried so much stuff to get the smell/grease out, commercial solvents, a giant bottle of alcohol soaked into the seat and left overnight. kinda worked but on a hot day it must melt a little and a slightly sour buttery smell wafts through the car so it has been coined the buttermobile by all my friends. stopped using it as a daily driver (4x4 for getting to dive spots etc), but also can't sell it 'til i properly fix the smell :p
