The budget for this game is apparently $200 million.  Welp.

How... how many fucking copies would they need to sell to break even?  I don't even wanna think about it

The market has changed so much since the original came out. That game came out a few months before Halo 3 and Call of Duty 4. Think how different everything is now. I don't think that's a good sign for them sales wise. As of 2010 the original had sold 4 million across all platforms.

I think critically the game will be exceptionally well received. That part seems automatic. Its the part where they took so long to build a fps game that doesn't have an MP portion and I assume isn't ostensibly open world which helps pad gameplay time.

Which is of course all a separate discussion from said quality of game.

3.3 million, assuming that the publisher gets 100% of every $60 game sold [hint: it's not nearly that high].

i tried to play OG Bioshock again recently and tapped out pretty early. The atmosphere is great if you're in the mood for it but comically grimdark if not. An odd thing happens when 'realistic' graphics age: they start to look absurd and lose all verisimilitude. So the little sisters and such just look like ridiculous little 3D puppets to me now

Did you find parts of Bioshock scary?  Few people think of Bioshock as scary but it's actually just as freaky as Silent Hill.  You walk along in a dead city full of crazies and traps around every corner.

I remember just exploring around and suddenly turning to find an ugly ass splicer.  Made my skin tingled.  Probably scarier cuz I was using headphones.

What kills the excitement a bit is knowing that you'll always resurrect.  They fixed that in a patch but the game should have shipped with no resurrection.

to be fair, only $100 million is the development budget.  the other $100 million is the marketing budget to try to make some of that stupid budget back somehow.

That's a lot of marketing for a non-bro game

If it's roughly 80% (what it was back in the day when I worked at GS) then they'd need to sell about 4.2 million copies.  At $60.  For fucks fucking sakes.

Just how much did Columbia cost? The studio is predictably keeping quiet on the shooter’s overall budget, but a New York Times article mentions some analyst estimates put it around $200 million. Creative Director Ken Levine responds to the figure on Twitter with a denial and a healthy swig of a sarcasm power potion.

For a game like this the reviews are essentially meaningless. Which is not to say it may not be an amazing game. But this is the sort of game that falls right in line with the biases of the majority of "professional" game journalists. Its like catnip to them.

I really don't get the industry's fascination with lavishing over the top praise on big releases. From Adam Sessler's review:

Quote
This moment, in its odd quietude and musical anachronism, is one of numerous tableaus in Bioshock Infinite that catapult this exhilarating meditation on identity, guilt, belief, narrative, revolution, race, national identity and eventually games themselves into a brilliant sensory symphony without precedent in the medium.

It is one of the most remarkable creative feats I have experienced.

I still prefer IGN's uncharted 3 review. Which is funny because I can definitely say that game was over-rated by nearly everyone imo.

Quote
I talk about the heart-wrenching section where Drake is by himself and completely lost. He's on his last legs, he's desperate, and I'm right there with him. I'm pushing him through the journey at hand and it's clear that it's a game, but as he stumbles, seeks shelter and loses hope, my heart breaks.

I think reviewers are part activists so when they play a game they really like they feel the need to over-sell to get people invested.

I keep wanting to say that it’s ‘directed’ brilliantly, the elements fit together so well. But that’s not the right word, because the other thing it does well is keeping you in control. There are no cutscenes, no switching to third person, no agency-limiting tropes like mounted gun sections. The few times you’re not free to move are generally when your character physically wouldn’t be.

Maintaining that respect for the player, even when you need to tell a character-driven story, is a rare and wonderful thing. Like Half-Life 2, Infinite doesn’t feel like a game made by frustrated filmmakers. It feels like a game made by people who know how to make films, and decided to make something else.
