Apparently you get the XCOM key together in the same email as the other games. Did you read through it carefully?

yeah, and so did Sho. Unless it is mislabelled somehow it isn't in there.

Haha, yeah I did a double take when I heard that. I loved exploring the first area, doing all the minigames, listening to all the little conversations, seeing kids smoking ("Minor Victory: The only cigarette made for kids!"). Then the twist...

The combat in the game is ridiculous. I am really impressed that they managed to replicate the mechanics present in the early trailers. It looks so chaotic but the movement and controls are super intuitive and you always feel in control.

I am not completely sold on Elizabeth yet. She isn't the typical "gawking sheltered child seeing the world for the first time" but there are elements of that. I enjoy the her as a gameplay mechanic and I enjoy that I don't have to protect her. I hope to see her character continue to grow.

Columbia seems to be having a celebration/anniversary of when they succeeded from the union. So in the park one of the head guys(I think) is running a raffle where the main character wins and his reward is to throw a baseball(a good olde American thing!) at an interracial couple that Columbia is against. The city is racist you see.

I think I'm about 2/3 through 1999 mode.

[close]
It's pretty easy and I don't even play many FPSes. Only died once so far. I was right, as usual. Pick up the Carbine and Hand Cannon for almost 1 shot headshots w/ 50% crit perk, use possession on any machines, max out your health and shields, and camp out in well guarded corners. Ammo and health are all over the place. Turrets are easy to hide from and juke once everything else is dead. I've got about 4000 funds and not much to do with them, no upgrades interest me and death or checkpoints are pretty much a non-issue.

The reason I came down on this mode is because of Ken Levine's endless blustering in interviews and official blog posts. Too bad if you're an insecure fanboy that has to personally attack me for giving my opinion on an overhyped difficulty level. The game itself is a pretty bland shooter imo. The rail combat is kinda neat but that's about all it has going for it. The plot is barely keeping my interest and the pinkerton fetch quests have been dragging on for too long.

Now if you want a recently re-released shooter that might kick your ass, get Duke Nukem 3D and set it to Damn I'm Good. You run out of ammo almost instantly, you die in 3-4 hits and every enemy respawns within 5 seconds unless you gib them. Pretty similar to Doom on Nightmare. Or just give Vanquish God Hard a try.. that is completely ridiculous.

Once again:

"I appreciate their attempt with 1999 mode but people are going to find ways to break it easily. You can't turn a power fantasy sandbox game into a serious, balanced, and difficult action game by restricting reloads and buffing enemy stats. Western devs have typically been miles behind in hardcore skill based gameplay."

Then again.

I looked at the GB QL and it's definitely Bioshock, so I think I'd save a lot more time and energy not bothering. However, thankfully youtube is a thing.

Depends if you loved the previous two bioshock games. They're very similar - superpowered scavenger hunt through dystopia with vending machines everywhere. It's not a bad game, lots of pretty visuals, but the gameplay is straight up Bioshock.

Feels just like a bioshock game though. Went with the controller since it does feel better. I can't stand this auto lock bullshit.  :-\

I really can't seem to get it to have a stable frame rate no matter what I do. I've tried locking it, but it doesn't seem to work. I updated my graphics drivers too, cause that usually gives some small performance gains with new games. The game sure does look pretty though even if it's got some old ass flat textures from 2008. I'm really impressed by the skyhook system and the melee.

"over the top stereotype" means that the game is exaggerating features.   Do conservatives in real life walk around just stating all their beliefs in the most blunt way possible, throwing baseballs at everything different?  Maybe this characterization would be more relevant 100 years ago, but it does nothing to address the current state of things in an accurate manner because that wouldn't make for as sensational of a video game.

And everything gets even more video game once the story picks up anyway, particularly the end.  The whole story is idiot bait for people dying for something meaningful to come from this medium, just like most AAA games.

Played for a few hours last night so still early. edit: I purposely haven't read the thread since the game came out so if my thoughts are redundant then that's why.

My impressions are that its a lot more like Bioshock than I imagined at least early. Not necessarily a knock but for some reason I thought it would diverge a bit more. I'm not sure Irrational can go to the well here a third time. They probably need to do something really different if they want to keep their critical darling status.

Yeah its pretty heavy handed message wise which is both a bit unforunate but also to be expected. It was the same in Bioshock but that didn't bother me as much in Bioshock because the concept was so original but this time it does make me roll my eyes more at certain sections.

Combat seems more fun and varied which I like so far although by no means is it the most amazing shooter in the world mechanically still. The best thing about the game is how dedicated they are to telling a suspenseful entertaining story which has been lost in most shooter games. So I like it so far but I think how most people will feel on it is similar to the original Bioshock. It isn't making any big leap. If you like the original Bioshock you probably like this for similar reasons. If you were a bit meh on the original Bioshock you will feel the same here.

edit: Forgot to mention graphically I was surprised that it didn't impress me quite like I thought based on the very original hype on the graphics. I mean the art is very good and the style is very good but technically its very very average. It's looks very much of a game this gen. For some reason I thought it was going to be kinda like an early next gen game or something. I can run it on ultra on my computer no problem which is generally a sign that its not the most taxing game in the world although the various set pieces do look very nice. It goes to show how few fps games get those parts right nowadays.

how come no one else uses the vigors

i mean, there's like an entire factory pumping this shit out by the truckloads and you're the only one who drinks them

would have given the game a neat strategic element, say having to use "x" vigor to counter an enemy's "y" vigor
