So GAF has become an unreadable forum post-Japan-Quake.  Every thread has turned into the hyper-sensitive vs. the insensitive and no one is talking about the actual news underneath.  Way too many crazy people on gaf coming out of the woodworks now (or people you always thought were normal are now showing their hidden crazy).  Bailing on that forum entirely.

White Knighting and general craziness has reached a new high. There are still a few things I like there, though.

I agree with you about white knighting but at the same time, GAF has about a half dozen girl picture threads with one pretty much devoted entirely to pedos.  Kind of surreal.

Yeah, they're creepy. I just don't click on them.

Yeah, I came here to post about lol.

A review of this generation's twists and surprises may have seemed like a good idea at first but surprisingly it doesn't pack humorous punch, which is strange considering the thread starter. I'm not feeling it at all. I personally blame his unfunny audience.

Edit: Now watch that black crystal orb becoming another lame meme :-\

There's a law about humour from The Simpsons. If something is funny once, it will get consistently less funny each time you do it, until you reach a stage where you've done it so many times that it becomes funny again.

See: Simpsons Cape Fear rake scene with Sideshow Bob.

Of course as you mentioned once everyone starts doing it, then all bets are off and it's just lame.

It's no coincidence that it got less funny the more specific it got.

And the FPS one would be better if it was just "First-person shooters will evolve into new exciting forms! The style of play shall be based on hiding behind waist-high obstructions, while red jam smears your screen".

Ehh it isn't very funny period. Sure it's entertaining but the idea is definitely not original. It's basically a slightly altered "let's pretend we're in the year ____"  thread.

Not one to participate in such an argument but I'd love to see the reaction of the board in general with a $250 launch price for the NGP

Does 3G really cost an extra $100? Come the fuck on.

I doubt it does but it aint stopping Apple with their extra $129.

E3 should be interesting since the true price for the ngp should be announced.

video game stories suck ass and will most likely always suck ass because even if you have the best premise you still have to drag that shit out for upwards of twenty hours, and nothing maintains an even level of quality at such lengths

video game writer's guide:

awesome cinematic opening
weak tutorial
dangle the string for 2-4 segments
big set piece
dangle string again, varying lengths
big set piece
calm before the storm
plot twist
big set piece
lengthy cinematic set up for big finish
big finish
leave a hole for a sequel

repeat above for sequel if first game is not in a dump bin a month after release

That still doesn't justify you spoiling Dead Space for me, bastard!

With videogames, presentation and mood are at least as important as the "screenplay". With a movie, you're directed the whole way through a very tight narrative and shown things only from the perspective that that the crew wants you to view it from. There is some of that in videogames as well, but they're much more open, even the ones with guided narratives. Even in Modern Warfare, I can jack around for hours and hours in the same spot just running in circles and randomly firing my gun.

I would consider the best story presentation to be in a game like Half-Life 2. The story is there, but it's something you pick up from playing the game, it's not shown to you through lengthy cutscenes that pull you out of your character.

Videogames are really a whole different animal with a whole different set of rules and simply trying to directly compare it to movies and books doesn't quite work. The comparisons don't really accomplish anything, other than to fuel high-pitched internet arguments.

It's cool.  At least it got me to just check out Dead Space 2's beginning instead of waiting until I'm done with DS1.  It was pleasant to find out that DS2 has much better visuals.

I reflexively skip cutscenes.  If I can't, I kind of just tune them out.  Most video game stories are terrible.  I'd rather have a game place greater emphasis on the scenery than jacking some insipid anime trope and extending it for a 15 minute cutscene.  I don't play games for the story.  It's probably at the bottom of my list of priorities for games.

I'd put story above graphics, but bother are lesser considerations in the grand scheme. Although it does depends to some degree on what kind of game it is.

this is not to say that i think video game stories are 100% shit, i pick up clever moments in a lot of games where i will think to myself "that's good writing, too bad it was wasted on this"

I don't play games for story but rarely skip cutscenes because I like experience the entire product that the people who made it gave me. Even if the story is crap, which is usally the case.

That said, in regards to general story in games, I think games tend to be pretty bad at plot but are generally good at characters, world building, mood and atmosphere, themes, symbols and scenary. When you spend 20-50 hours with characters, you can kind of get "attached" to them, especially when they're essentially under your control. I like that aspect of video games -- that is, pulling you into a foreign world -- more so than the actual stories.

That's why I made that "What game world would you like to live?" gamefaqs thread at gaf, because I like imaginary places, and being able to control an avatar in a made up world built from scratch just scratches a certain itch that I can't define. I really like that and think video games really excel at that, and for that reason I find that adventure games (in traditonal, point and click sense) and horror games tend to have the best stories and characters, because they're all about that type of story telling I just described.

Video game stories have their place. They're not all awful, but the really good ones are few and far between. People who act like game stories are all shit and have no place are just as annoying as the people who say games are better than modern film. Something can be enjoyable and not be high art, which is the problem with nerds: they see anything that is enjoyable as high art, lacking any sense of objectiviity in their opinions. See: Star Wars. But the flip side is also true, they'll trash things that aren't TRYING to be high art simply because they're entertaining when that's the whole point, see: Avatar.

Never skip cutscenes either. If you are so far that you actively skip most cutscenes and story segments, you're just playing some shitty ass games I reckon.

A game like Oblivion has a pretty mediocre story, even when it's at its best. But I've put tons of time into it because I like "living" in the game world: finding all the little secret locations, wandering around town, finding some monsters to hack up, and the like. Like you said, games are good at putting you into the world and making you feel like you're a part of it. That's something that you can't really get from a movie or even a book, certainly not to the degree that games can.
