I mean, I agree that a blanket-generalization about an entire country of developers is a pretty silly thing to do, but I don't think his status as a game designer with completed titles under his belts would make him more qualified. Well, more important than his experience of getting actual games released was that he had unique insight that Phil Fish doesn't in that he actually is a Japanese developer. I think his cultural background is more important there than his professional in giving him some cover for being qualified to make these kinds of statements.

When the BioWare doctors started disparaging JRPGs back in the day, while some obviously agreed with the critique not being fans of JRPG fans themselves, not a ton of people thought that it was kosher for them to levy these critiques based solely on their track record of releasing Western RPGs.
