Did Nirolak go by a different handle before? I recognize pretty much every one who's a mod, but I don't think I've seen that guy before. I mean, I took like a year and half off from the gaming section (not entirely, but posted VERY rarely) from 2009-2010, so if he's somewhat of a new poster, I guess that would explain it.

Nirolak is someone who came out of nowhere at '08, and started churning out 2-4 threads per day since day 1, just reposting whatever pops up on Kotaku and VG247. He didn't even participate in said threads beyond posting the OP, and rarely posted in other threads. I'm 60% sure that this is his alt, and he's a much older GAFfer.

However, I learned to appreciate his efforts, he's gotten a lot better at compiling data and digging up stuff, and he's actually one of the few mods (or only mod) who'd rather flex his privilages to moderate and regulate posts rather than posters.

And that's the real problem with GAF: everyone is so focused on either making sure everyone knows that their personal opinion is the correct one or on desperately trying to get their opinion validated by everyone else.

I work with around 70 other guys in IT and there isnt a single pc gamer left. They all moved to consoles or handhelds. I don't think its a "scam" per se although I tend not to buy games that do it but that's a personal choice and is neither here nor there I suppose. So I think they have the right to do it and I think it will only increase in the future even though I don't like it. What I tend to disagree with is the argument that game companies make in that they should share in the profit in second hand sales. They came up with these online passes as a way to combat that issue which while I may not like it, at least its more reasonable than that position.

I think those people have probably just got more complex lives now and keeping their PC rig up to date to play the latest games probably isn't something that interests them anymore. Not that there is anything wrong with either position. I think PC gaming is great. I think console gaming is great. I just don't understand the need to loudly and proudly, and annoyingly turn myself into a walking talking 24/7 billboard for any platform.

Well how else can you get gems like this.

It took quite the bombardment of annoyance from my PC gaming friends to realize just how fucking stupid I was. The more they talked about how awesome PC gaming was and how I should upgrade, the more it really, really annoyed me. Not really because of the repetition of the message, but because of internal cognitive dissonance that wouldn't accept how PC's as a viable game platform. GAF repeats some of the same things all the time, it doesn't annoy me. It seems like a read "Uncharted 2 is the best game ever" in some form like 3 times a week, and it never bothers me, despite my strong disagreement.

If you read "PC gaming is superior" in every thread and it bothers you/conjures up reasons to defend console gaming, there's probably an underlying mental insecurity that you should consider dealing with.

Cafe threads reminded me of the Revolution threads, where there is just nothing but pie in the sky speculation with various people hinting at insider sources and taking those sources to be 100% truth.  Those old Revolution threads where people spent pages upon pages talking about what amazing things can be done with the Revolution, how FPS games will all start coming to the Revolution, and long posts from Lapsed, who I assumed was a joke character.

I've learned by lesson by simply avoiding the gaming section at all costs.  In fact, I pretty much ignore the OT as well.  I think I made two posts there in the last month.  The place just ain't for me.

I rarely pirate these days often because it is 10x more convenient for me to buy things legitimately.  Porn is pretty much all I download illegally these days.

Torrent games on the other hand is a big no. Downloading and playing through the entire game and not paying a dime is just wrong.

Seriously, I actually think piracy is LESS these days. Back in the day, everyone knew fucking napster, morpheus and kazaa. But sometimes I'll ask people if they got the torrent and they're like,"what's that?" I definitely think torrents have made less pirates, in SOME cases, because some people find that shit too complex.

I know that when I was in school 10 years ago, everyone and their dog had Napster and used it often.  It was so simple and easy to use.  I could find anything I wanted and it was fast as well.

Now most of the people I know that were Napster junkies just pay 99 cents for the song they want on iTunes.  Some still torrent but most casual internet users hate the idea of fucking around with torrents or usenet.  It's why streaming porn is so popular: it's fast and easy to use.  The internet community is not a valid determinant as to the state of piracy.  I agree with you Himuro that I think most people pirate less, especially music.  Cheap music (iTunes) and simple movie streaming options (Netflix, Jizzhut) are the future.  Fortunately the respective industries are finally starting to get the hint, although it will take some time for them to adjust.

Kinda, game distribution is really pretty good, DD services that don't discriminate by region (for the most part) and games generally come out within a day or 2 at retail. As far as music, film and television go, distribution sucks total, especially television, iTunes locks you out of other regions and the official NZ iTunes is lacking in content, eMusic and other big DD music services also lock you out now (I used to use emusic years ago, till they put the smack down). Oh and Nintendo sucks at timely distribution here too. Outside of America it's amazing how relatively shit media distribution is, it's definitely available to everyone though, so long as you have a decent internet connection and no moral objection. You could use a VPN if you want, but that costs money and is still breaking rules, so fuck it.

Same here. there is even a dude that stand in one of my college's entrance with a backpack full of burned movies and porn for sale.

we also have a flea market that opens every sunday that is full of pirated games, movies, tv shows, music and even books.
