Is there a difference between a GAF celebrity and a person who posts consistently enough to have achieved name recognition?

As a long time lurker, someone like Ghaleon EB is far more recognizable and meaningful to me than someone like Timedog.  I doubt anyone would call GhaleonEB a GAF celeb.

I suppose the difference is that the GAF Celeb turns attention inward, either by the nature of his posts, the inclination of the rest of the forum, or a combination of the two.  I'm guessing that Ronito and OnkelC have comparable name recognition, but it's OnkelC that was the GAF celeb . . . or something.

nintards perceive sony as copying a nintendo idea, it's blood in the water, man.  doesn't matter if it's brain training, smash brothers, motion controls, the wiimote, mario kart, touchscreens, connectivity, ninten dogs, whatever

if sony "copies" nintendo, the nintards will put them under the curse of destruction

just another instance of nintendo copying sega  ::)

It's too bad Sega couldn't copy Nintendo's success or good game design.

I mean only four consoles (only one of them good) and a (super crappy) handheld? That's their legacy? Pfft.

I'm beginning to think it's new juniors who perpetuate these old and tired arguments. With every new wave, we're greeted with people with heavy things they want to get off their chests. Things that have already been discussed to death, unbeknownst to them. That's why I've been having so many deja vus lately.

I agree and noticed this a while ago. Then again, it keeps things fresh and moving and feeling alive. GAF would be better served in the short term by stopping registrations but then it'd become a wasteland. Gotta keep those ad bucks coming.

Sony should just go all out. Give Invizimals an RPG adventure mode, and make a traditional looking RPG called "Serpent Adventure" with designs by Oda (SCE probably couldn't afford him so it'd be like Kubo or something). It will be glorious.

For Serpent Adventure to work Sony would need to find anyone who can make an RPG that isn't Level-5 or like imageepoch.

sega rarely copied anyone

This is really not true.  Sega was bent on being cutting edge and ahead of the pack, but was also very reactionary.  Streets of Rage (Final Fight), Shinobi (Rolling Thunder), Alex Kidd (Super Mario), Jet Set Radio (Tony Hawk), Shining Force(Fire Emblem), Phantasy Star(Dragon Quest), Space Channel 5/Samba De Amigo(Parappa/DDR), Virtua Fighter/Eternal Champions (Street Fighter II & Mortal Kombat), Golden Axe Warrior (and their other various attempts at a Zelda-style game) ... all were a direct response to a recent or at least prior success story.  Of course you can point to all the games they were inspired by and point out precedents to those games, but the distinction is clear to most.  They made, and still make, some very creative games in a variety of genres like Teddy Boy Blues, Borderline, Doki Doki Penguin Land, Buck Rogers Planet of Zoom, Borench, Gain Ground, Kolibri, Nights, those games they did in partnership with Gremlin in the early 80s etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. (though I can't actually think of anything really and truly ahead of its time) but let's be real.  To some degree, everybody did it - Nintendo got an awful lot of mileage out of Joust (it goes beyond Balloon Fight and into specific elements of Mario Bros and Super Mario Bros), but Sega was more shameless about this stuff than most.  I think only SNK beats them out for sheer lack of professional pride.  Namco in the 90s I guess too.

I feel like I've been saying this a lot lately, but part of SCE's MO from day 1 was to try to offer their own take on every popular genre. It's just that with some genres it's easier to put your own spin on it than others. PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale is a pretty shameless clone of Smash visually, but Syphon Filter's not really like Goldeneye at all. I don't care who did it first, or who made it popular. I care about who did it best, and for my money CTR is better than any MK. So let Sony, Nintendo, or even MS take a wack at it.

RIP Good Naughty Dog :(

Syphon Filter was a ripoff of Metal Gear (which is a completely shameless ripoff of Castle Wolfenstein).  Not a whole lot in common with GE, that's just desperate fanboys looking for hits.
Also, MK7 is objectively better than CTR ... but it took Nintendo long enough.  Also props to ND having a better understanding of what MK did well than apparently Nintendo did for two decades.

No, Syphon Filter was made as a response to Goldeneye:

"It all started with this one page synopsis that Sony brought to our studio... an action espionage thriller because Goldeneye [on N64] had just come out and it was really successful and they kind of wanted the PlayStation equivalent of that."

Though the game does have a lot more in common with Metal Gear than Goldeneye.

Making games in the same genre is hardly reactionary. Virtua Fighter isnt even in the same genre as Mortal Kombat and SFII. I mean. I'm a self confessed sega fan, but thats just inserting your own magic interpretation on history right there. Then you have weird stuff like Tony Hawk --> Jet Grind Radio? Are you claiming it took SEGA less than six months to conceive, plan, dev and release it? (Tony Hawk = August 1999, JGR = June 2000). Your post is full of silliness like this, just pointing out the obvious.

Virtua Fighter was just a really, really ugly 2D fighter until Virtua Fighter 3 added a z-axis (which was after Soul Edge - but not long after, so credit is due).  The similarities with SFII go right down to very specific mechanics.  This is Known.  Even the character designs were (I'm sure you know the story of Akira and who he replaced at Suzuki's command) - this is sheer dishonesty or fanboy delusion.  You're 100% right about Jet Set Radio, I thought Tony Hawk was released earlier and JSR later, maxi mea culpa.

I was using hyperbole saying it's not in the same genre, you called me on it :lol

Real talk though, the mechanics arent alike. It uses three buttons. You can jump on a fallen enemy for maximum cheap damage. The moves .. are situational, you have ring outs. Virtua Fighter broke it's own ground, it happens to be the same genre as SFII and MK, but it is very different. The "capcom fighter" line has had many knockoffs like King of Fighters, Guilty Gear, BlazBlue etc you can surely see how VF does not belong in that list.

I mean shit like counters, input buffers, throws etc.  I know it's not a clone - the gameplay style is very different, but a lot of the particulars aren't (also, I didn't mean to say it was inspired by MK - I meant to say Eternal Champions was inspired by MK.  Poorly expressed).  It's all beside my point though - VF was specifically made as a reaction to SFII and its success.  That at least is not controversial.  Anyway, this is kinda silly.

I'll agree on some of those, owl, but calling VF a copy of Street Fighter is straight-up idiot.  That's like calling Gran Turismo a copy of Outrun.

I don't think it's a copy - I said it's not - but it's clear Sega was copying Capcom's notes there.  Street Fighter II was studied.  Lessons were learned.  Some things they wanted to do the same, some things they made a point of doing different.  You can say it just belonged to the same genre - but at the time, Street Fighter II was the genre.  It's hard to think of a defining characteristic that SFII introduced - gameplay-wise - that didn't transfer to VF, the lone exception I can think of being projectile attacks.  And it's pretty specific ideas and innovations that were cribbed, not just superficial details or broad concepts.  The fact that we take it for granted now - in part because VF helped disseminate and generic-ify this stuff - doesn't obscure the reality.  All this being said, 'copy' is an impolite way of saying it and is better reserved for more obvious examples so ...

The rest of your list I'll concede, but I would say a dozen or so games over the course of hundreds qualifies as rare.

Well, I was thinking in terms of 'rare in comparison to other major publishers', in which case I'd say they were over par.  A ton of their best-known stuff was heavily influenced by the success stories of the time frame in which they were introduced.  Stand out exceptions would be rail shooters, which they pretty well owned.

Forget I mentioned JSR, that was just embarrassing.

"Why can't my child appreciate gaming back in the good ole days?"

More like why can't I create an exact clone of me.

Your kid probably doesn't like the music you grew up with either or the TV shows you grew up with, or any of the other shit you grew up with. Rather than trying to make him relive your childhood, worry about whether he's an asshole or not and let him have his own childhood.

"Sure I could force him to play them but he wouldn't enjoy them"
