I always find the responses of people who have no connection to events like this interesting. There is a difference between sympathy/empathy/compassion and then acting like a victim.

Sadly, as the population continues to swell these tragedies are going to occur more. The actual rate of them might not increase, but the total numbers of them will and it may seem like the world is in chaos since they will be reported in great detail.

"You" has the advantage that besides being gender-neutral it's also number-neutral, at least so far as the positive integers are concerned - it doesn't make any presumptions about whether somebod(y/ies) prefers to be addressed as a singular entity, plural entities, or either depending on the situation. However I'm not sure how well it works for preferred numbers elsewhere in the complex plane.

I have empathy for the victims and their families.  I can see how those with young kids of their own would be more upset as it's easier for them to imagine themselves being in the shoes of the parents who lost their kids.  But there's also a lot of getting carried away going on.
