Gotta say, it's embarrassing the way Link holds his sword out like a forked stick when running about.

Oh how the mighty have fallen.

If you told me in that I wouldn't even want to play a Zelda game a few years back I would have laughed.

Link running around with his sword out animates the way it does due to the fact they programmed it to correspond with how the player is holding it.  Certain puzzles have been shown to use this feature such as making eye doors dizzy by twirling the sword around.

There were no visually misregistered sword swings in that vid, unless you think the overhead slashes bouncing off of the armored spider are an indication of this.

see, the issue is that i don't imagine a normal gamer spends much time doing waggle sports with his or her friends

that seems to be the sole province of the yellow-breasted nintard, and i didn't think magoose was a nintard

You say this as if the 20 million people who bought Wii Sports resort never happened.  The first Tiger Woods motionplus game did alright, and most of the 2k wii sports catalogue supports the peripheral.

I think there was a semantical issue.  I think of normal gamers as normal people that happen to play games.  Not saying people who identify as gamers aren't normal per se, but I don't think of them as having some kind of legitimacy that CoD dudebros or Farmville peeps don't.

I know this. That is why my sword will always be sheathed; only to be pulled out when necessary, so that I produce the undulated gestures that make use of the much, (so far  ;)), propitious Motion+. Thus, I look like a tit only when the occasions present themselves. And in the game.

I've already explained that.  Twilight Princess read waggle, not positioning.  Skyward Sword uses the positioning in various situationd.  The sword beam mechanic requires a charge state by pointing your sword upwards.  Eye doors (and I imagine many other puzzles!) want the player to use the way the sword is being held in the puzzle solving process.  The way Link holds his sword is a constant connection to how the player holds the remote.  Its a necessary function to better facilitate how to interact with the game.

If you don't like the way it looks then you can like , uh, conciously contort your irl arm to whatever is acceptable.  I don't see what the alternative there is when attempting 1:1 tracking.

yeah, it's an oversight but not really a complaint.

it maps the sword to the wii remote but they forgot most people hold it kinda like this:

so Link is pointing his sword forward because it's relative to your hand position.  You can hold your hand to your side for it to look more natural, but it wouldn't be more comfortable for the player.

the other solution would be to make the advanced sword moves require the Z button to be held down.  we've more or less seen the same dungeon over and over, so there could be a reason for why they didn't do that.

The facts being you weren't inspired by prerelease trailers and you don't like how they chose to animate the 1:1 sword controls.  Yeah I'm sure that will make or break the game.

The zelda cycle is its own beast apart from the sonic cycle to be sure.

There is no cycle. I'm usually pumped for console Zelda's. Don't bring up that alarmist "they don't agree with me so let's pigeonhole them" claptrap into this thread.

About as bullshit as saying "the latest zelda is the worst zelda ever until the next game comes out when it's suddenly good" bullshit.

qq more himu, good lord

the zelda cycle is something a lot of people have stressed is self-fulfilling, and I once believed in it as well.  It started ever since Majora's Mask: people immediately hate the new game and tell themselves they miss the "better" game that came before it.  It got a lot of weight when TP came out.

Personally, I just think Zelda fans are fucking morons and don't know what the fuck they want/like (himu is great evidence for this), and I've learned to just enjoy whatever the team puts out, no matter its faults.  I've had varying enjoyment of every Zelda game, even the DS ones.  The less bitching, the more I genuinely like a game

eh, that was worded pretty terribly.  I meant that I don't really actively bitch about a trend that I hate in the games lately; I just try to find enjoyment with whatever the game offers.  The DS games are pretty awful Zelda games, but they offered a new experience and I enjoyed the dungeon design for the most part.  But just because it was less than great, I'm not going to suddenly distrust the Zelda team

fuck I'm just digging my own grave.  nevermind, I'm dumb too

edit: himu you're going to play this game and then praise the hell out of it.  your constant wah-wahing will prove useless once it comes out

You know what? You're probably right. I more than likely will. I even like PH to some degree.

But that doesn't mean I can't comment on the direction of the series, which, as far as the media we've seen, is as gimmicky as it gets and saying that what we've been saying in this thread goes without merit is grade A cat poop, especially - ESPECIALLY - after the release of PH and ST.

and like I've said, if you're sick of gimmicks -- things that have been a staple of the zelda series since forever -- then maybe you just need to move onto a franchise that does something different with a zelda-like formula.  it's not a bad thing.

Yeah I got that ;) still funny though. I'll agree that it's an exercise in futility turning a critical eye to stoically repetitious series like Zelda, I know what I'm getting, and if I'm likely to be pissed off it'll be about things like stupid ass 5 hour tutorials

stop blaming the game and start blaming the hardware.  the zelda team aren't the hardware guys at Nintendo -- they're probably as annoyed as you are with the shit they have to work with.  But work with the hardware they must, and they are trying to get the most out of what they're given.  Blame Iwata and Miyamoto, not Aonuma.

I just feel like they dropped by the ball when choosing the add-on to hitch this game behind.  They would have more of my attention if they had used the biofeedback sensor, and focused the game around Links intense fear of heights while at the same time living in the sky.  He then learns all about his own physiological rhythms in order to defeat his inhibiting phobia.  I don't think Nintendo realizes that this is what people mean when they clamor for a more adult Zelda.

TP Cube is rare? It was like one of the last GameCube games I still saw on shelves, right alongside Melee. It was also like $40 and I could still see it in like 2008-2009... Hrm.

Anyways yeah, love the boxart, and will definitely get the bundle since I don't have WM+ already.

Sorry Himu, but LA does not deserve much credit for being unique. MM at least had the 3-day time system to affect the gameplay, but LA is nearly friggin identical in gameplay with LttP (in fact, dumbed down in many aspects even). The ONLY distinguishing feature is the story.

Wrong. Games like Majora's Mask and Link's Awakening are refreshing and a huge reason is because there IS no Ganon.

Sorry Himu, but LA does not deserve much credit for being unique. MM at least had the 3-day time system to affect the gameplay, but LA is nearly friggin identical in gameplay with LttP (in fact, dumbed down in many aspects even). The ONLY distinguishing feature is the story.

uhhh, they're similar but not entirely identical. LttP doesn't use items like LA does. LA is weird sometimes. Being able to jump, for instance? Also, the world is more connected than LttP's in a way in the sense that it's just one big puzzle and you have to find ways to navigate and traverse it. LttP isn't in the same way.

That said I prefer LttP.

I went back and played some Majora's Mask only to find it's yet another game that Nintendo fans mindlessly cherish out of nostalgia.

If you actually handed that game to a human being, I have a hard time believing they'd be able to complete even half the content in the game without a FAQ. There is no information given about the sidequests, or even where to go! Is there something I'm missing?

Also, that people complained about the 3-day system is stupid. The game gives you at least three different songs to change time to your liking. Slow it down, restart the cycle, or speed it up. But time management is not a problem that MM has. It's how needlessly cryptic the game is at communicating goals to you.
