real talk: never heard the words "i don't care about sales" uttered by anyone whose pet toy wasn't losin' hardcore

Real talk: I don't give a shit about sales.  I buy all the consoles and play whatever.  It's a hobby...I might care if I worked at a company dependent on its sales or had stock or something.

I do think it's funny seeing all the proclamations that the system is dead already.  Thought the same thing about the 3DS months ago.

I have to admit, I cared about what was on top back when I was in the third grade.  Nintendo vs. Sega made for some pretty hardcore discussion at the lunch table!

I like videogames so they are all my pet toys.  I enjoy competition from all the parties involved and a thriving market.  Something Japan tends to always lack unfortunately.

actually jjs prefers nintendo

which is kinda the point, everyone has favourites, and it's a bit silly when people can't just fess up to that, because if you can admit it, you can at least still have discussion

it's when people put on some b.s. show of being indifferent that conversations get really stupid

I have favorites.

Favorite game series and developers, that is.  I don't really care which platform it is unless it affects the way the game turns out-- I hate waggle so I'm not a fan of playing games on the Wii, for example. Not a fan of motion control-stuff either.

Speaking of that, someone on GAF literally begged me to try Uncharted Golden Abyss with the gyro controls on after I complained how much the analog stick aiming sucks.  Have to admit, it really does make the game a hell of a lot more playable with motion aiming enabled.

i can honestly say i don't have a specific favorite, every system/pc has its + and -, other than i just really don't care for nintendo stuff all that much

i keep trying, fuck, i bought and sold THREE wiis, but none of their stuff has ever appealed to me enough to hang on  (note that this is not a comment on the quality of their games, just personal preference)

i do play more on pc than anywhere else, but that's mainly because i have a fuckton of cheap/gifted games on steam

I prefer the Vita to the 3DS.  Not beating around the bush or anything.  I preferred the PSP hardware too, but liked/played the DS more because it had better software (and the touch screen).

I dunno.  I remember seeing "software makes the system" as a defense for bad hardware, and while that's true, the software would be better on the better hardware.  I played all third party games last gen on the PC or Xbox (with few exceptions like Tony Hawk and SSX), and most third party games I bought for my PC or 360.  Sometimes reading gaf makes me feel like I'm crazy for thinking this way.

The Wii is definitely the least favorite system of mine thanks to motion control city since I am no good with these motion control things.  When it has normal PS2 games like Xenoblade though or Mario Galaxy, even Wii is cool with me.

The Wii really disappointed me.  I genuinely enjoyed the first year and a bit of it, because Nintendo dropped a whole ton of good games on it in a very short span of time (mostly carry-overs from Gamecube), but man it dried up badly.

That said I tend to have a bias *for* Nintendo handhelds and a bias *against* Nintendo home consoles, so maybe I'ma just fullofit.

No, you're definitely not. I leaned far to the Nintendo side and the Wii was still a massive disappointment for me [for exactly the reason you mentioned].

Agreed.  I spent more time with my PSP than my DS.  I enjoyed a few puzzle games, the Castlevanias, Contra IV, Bleach DS2, and the Ace Attorney series on the DS, and that was about it.

Also agreed.  Some of the games I liked that used regular controls would also end up getting (better) ports to other platforms, like Samurai Warriors 3, or would be brought down by the Wii's limitations (Tatsunoko Vs. Capcom's shitty matchmaking system).

I did enjoy Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition, however.  The controls worked really well for that game.

JBores, who's getting a Vita?  I know DCharlie is...that's a given.

I bought a PSP so I could play GTA on the go. Now I can play GTA III or Chinatown Wars on my iPod.

I'm living sans-Vita.

So, in other words, you'll be buying a Vita when a GTA or a Saint's Row is released?  :P  Did either 3D PSP GTA have camera controls set to the face buttons?  I can't remember.
No, there were not any such controls on PSP. I think you could "chord" controls with the analog nubbie! But that wasn't compatible with my preferred control scheme. I don't call there being any specific controls for camera on DS.

Wasn't there an announced Saints Row for one of the handheld platforms?

I cancelled my Vita pre-order.

The biggest reason is that it will tank hard in the US and want to see what Sony will do to react to that.  Will they have TV out?  Generous price drop (even though the thing is cheap when you consider value)?  Eliminate region locking (probably unlikely)?  Or will you get a nice voucher for free PSN shit to download Vita games?  I don't expect the Vita to last long either and am buying it with the intentions of getting 1-2 years of content for the thing.  This assumes that there won't be a PSP type thing where xseed, NIS, and Fatlus pick up the slack because there's no guarantee that they will be willing to do that with the Vita.

As much as I hate it, I think iOS is the future of portable gaming.  Even though the shitware ratio is enough to make the Atari 2600 seem good, it is the future of handheld gaming.  I can't stand playing most games on my iPhone (there are a few good games for it, I'm not saying there's nothing good on the thing) and it shocks me that people who hate on waggle are creaming their pants over playing games on their phone.  Nevertheless, smartphones are becoming so ubiquitous to the point where 7 and 8 year olds have an iPhone or a Droid phone with plenty of content to serve them, teenagers, hipster douchebags, and people who like Cave shooters.  The economy is also as such that people are probably just going to get one handheld device and the answer is clearly the smartphone.  I somewhat expect Vita to be the last Sony handheld before they pack up their shit and go home.

I think dev units already have this, but TV-out is gonna be weird when you have games with motion controls and front/back touchscreen controls getting in the way.

Not any time soon.  Can certainly see the Wi-Fi model dropping to $199 in a year or two though.

Vita is already region-free.

3DS has already sold millions of systems worldwide.  I expect that the Vita will follow (but not sell as many systems, of course) in 8-10 months too.  People still clearly want gaming handhelds.  It's true that iOS/Android/whatever is what's taken over, but who cares?  You already said that you hate gaming on your iPhone...who gives a shit what others are playing?

I think they're pretty even keel for RPGs, actually.  The DS had a better selection of them in the first few years, but then it tapered off a bit and the PSP had a surge in RPGs.

Not really.

DS has:
Etrian Odyessy 1-3
SMT Strange Journey
SMT: Devil Survivor 1-2
Radian Historia
Orcs and Elves
Chrono Trigger
DQ Joker 1-2
DQ 4-6
FF-4
Fighting Fantasy: Warlock of Firetop Mountain
Lunar Knights
Mazes of Fate
Suikoden Teirkreis
World Ends with You
Infinte Space

And those are only the godd games of the rpgs on the DS, Gamefaqs has 3.5 pages of RPGS for it, 2.5 for the psp

PSP has:

Tactics Ogre
Mana Khemia 1-2
Persona 1-3(though i woudl never touch these i admit they were good games)
Star Ocean 1-2
YS Ark Of napishtim and oath of Felghana
Suikoden 1&2
Class of Heroes
Legend of Heroes:Traisl in the Sky

Rest were crap.

EDIT:  Forgot Suikoden for the PSP.
EDIT 2: Added some more games.  CoH, Trails in the sky and Infinite Space for the DS.

I listed persona games on there.  i am just not interested inn the school semester/day setup of those games and the psone versiosn of persona soured me to it all since it takes so much time with the story and it was unskippable on the psone.  I only like one of Mana Khemia games for that reason i coudlnt stand any more of it.

And I thoguth the legend of heroes games were mediocre?  Thats why i never played them.

As for Fighting fantasy beign bad look at the user reviews.  Not a single bad review on there for it.  If you take the reviews of review sites rather than actual players then i dont knwo what to say to you.  And star ocean games are awesome.  Much better than the sequels.

Ys 7 was far too easy for my liking.

If that makes me prefer Nintendo then so be it.

the controls were my biggest problem with the game.  the game has a brutal difficulty curve and a lot of that is down to the controls being fundamentally busted.  i also ran into an unacceptable number of bugs (lol western rpgs) and found the game to have too little content - a single stratum in EO provides more gameplay time and variety.

believe me, i really wanted to like it, the book was in my bag all the time when i was in junior high, but it's just not very good.  i'm glad you like it, but you're not going to convince anyone of the validity of your list if you keep it on there.

prole is right - class of heroes shits on it (yeah yeah i know, real-time combat vs turn-based, but w/e), etrian odyssey definitely shits on it, hell, dark spire even shits on it.

Yeah i didnt have a problem with the controls and i dont mind the short length.  I guess agree to disagree there.  I cant stand games with too much black in them hence why i woudl never touch dark spire or that Wizardry game on the DS if it ever gets releasesd stateside.

i don't remember having to manipulate eight buttons at once while licking a touch screen when playing wizardry, but i guess things may have been different where you are from

i hate it when people use 'old school' as an excuse for a poor or lazy effort.  fighting fantasy isn't 'old school', it's just poorly designed and badly implemented.

Thats true.  I meant old school not in terms of controls but in terms of gameplay otherwise.

Orcs & Elves was like a three hour game. Pretty good for an iOS game, but not very meaty.

I had fun with Orcs and Elves but it's not even very good by iOS standards.  It's a port of a cell phone game.  Not a smartphone game, but a cell phone game.  As a cell phone game in that era, it was exceptional.  As a DS game in that era, it was fun but absurdly overpriced.

Yeah i would have skipped it if i had a cellphone.  I still dont have one(i hate talking to people on a phone).  I only put it on there because i had fun with it.
