Kotaku Exclusively Brings Japanese Cult Hit Retro Game Master to the United States
NEW YORK – Gawker Media's influential gaming website Kotaku will be the first media outlet in the United States to air a U.S. version of Japan's wildly successful cult television hit Retro Game Master.
The show, known in Japan as Game Center CX, features comedian Shinya Arino playing Japan's most popular video games – a perfect fit for Kotaku. Kotaku, in partnership with RGM, will feature new episodes made for United States viewers weekly starting in June.

Peter Block's A Bigger Boat helped secure the rights for RGM from Yuko Shiomaki's pictures department. Yuko Shiomaki's pictures department acted as international representative on behalf of rights holder Fuji Television, Japanese international sales agent STYLEJAM, and Producer Tsuyoshi Kan of Gascoin.

Says Block "Watching RGM is addictive...I knew we had something special when we couldn't stop watching our first episodes, and when people would stop for a quick peek and stay for 30 minutes. It's Iron Chef for the Gamers."

Eric Spiegelman of Jetpack Media brokered the deal between Gawker Media and A Bigger Boat.

Retro Game Master will be featured exclusively on Kotaku every Thursday night, posting at 8pm EST, starting June 23, 2011.

Anybody care about this?

Yeah, I don't think this is going to get a ton of viewers. But I still hope it does well enough for them to continue on with additional seasons. I'll be sure to "tune in" every Thursday, even though I've already seen all of this stuff.

I'm glad they didn't, Kotaku almost certainly has more viewers.

Yeah, but I'd prefer to watch it on my TV instead of on a computer.

We're not subbing any DVD episodes or extended cuts, only TV broadcasts.  Don't want to promote piracy!  For such a niche series, having people import the DVDs can only help generate interest.

What is Game Center CX anyway?

Arino, a comedian who is absolutely terrible at games, is given a challenge to clear [game] by [date]. They're usually old Famicom or SFC games, but sometimes they throw some other things into the mix (like Steel Battalion :bow). His struggle is always fun to watch, especially when he's playing a really hard or shitty game.

They're kinda similar, but AVGN is more of a scripted character, and he tries to review the games he plays and such. Arino just tries to beat the games by the deadline they give him.

I like both shows, but I'd take GC CX over AVGN any day. Especially since GC CX doesn't have any awful skits like AVGN usually does.

Not even... Arino is just some japanese guy who squabbles and squawks (like most japanese people) and we're like "lol that silly japanese man is playing a hard game"

I've actually been to some of the arcades he visits, if they're not too far out of the way then I'll try and stop in if it seems interesting.  There's a retro arcade near where I live which I also hit up every once in awhile.  It's nice to play a game that actually rewards your skill and lets you play longer, nowadays you could be the best player ever but they'll find a way to limit your playing time so you keep pump in those 100yen coins!

Those country town arcades are pretty impressive, it's like going back to the mid-90s.  Back when it was actually feasible to open your own place since games didn't cost 2mil yen.

The narrator wasn't very good, but I didn't find him annoying or anything. The much larger problem is that they cut out all of the non-game bits... unless this episode for some reason didn't have any to begin with. That's pretty terrible.

Plus the translation was a little weird from time to time. At one point the narrator refers to the basic enemies as "zako" enemies. It's appropriate, but how many people will get that instead of being confused? Just seemed weird to me.

from what i understand all these bits are taken from DVD and the various other bit aren't featured on it so it's going to be the challenge's only

anyway it seems another subbing group decided to sub those, they just released episode number 80 which is kirby adventure

and it's a quite boring episode because kirby adventure is incredibly easy

The Shadow Land episode was good too. Makes me wish the Gawker episodes weren't butchered. It's nice to see that Shadow Land doesn't allow you to continue after dying as well. That's how all arcade ports should be done. (with a practice mode/level select for convenience) :)

I figured it's subbed, but having Kotaku actually do the episode means more people get to see the insanity of it.

I've played the game before, I want to see him sit there for 60 minutes doing nothing with the game to advance.

i doubt kotaku would pick it based on

1) on the first season the challenge segment is much much shorter so it wouldn't fill the whole time slot
2) it's a japan only game

though there is a chance,so far it seems they are picking random releases from dvd (ninja gaiden was from dvd 3 and fantasy zone is from dvd 5) and takeshi challenge is in dvd 2

I'm not helping out with any episodes that are out on DVD, so I didn't do anything with MM3.  For some stupid reason they're only subbing DVD episodes which is distinguished mentally-challenged when there are countless episodes that haven't been released yet.

The Tokimemo episode was my choice and I think it came out pretty well!

The Tokimeki episode was pretty good, I watched it last night before going to bed. And I forgot I had already seen the Fantasy Zone episode in Japanese... what are the odds that one of the few raw episodes I watched would be chosen for subs. :(

I'm looking forward to the Clock Tower episode as well. I like it when they do lesser known games like that instead of the classics like Mega Man and such. Plus Clock Tower is awesome.

The Bonanza Bros. episode was kinda crappy. What Arino said at the end is true, "If there's no tension, then I don't feel satisfaction once I beat it" or something along those lines. I hope Kotaku starts picking better episodes... But I know they want to do popular games to attract more viewers, so I guess it can't be helped.

i liked the end where he ends up falling through the pithole and he has to redo the whole game as a result :lol

and i don't think they are aiming at more popular game episodes, heck if they were trying to do that then they would have picked ocarina and be done with it

though they certainly are straying for games that are japanese only or too obscure

Even the first couple volumes of the DVD sets still hover around 4000-5000 yen used here in Japan.  That's a nice find, Mr. Gundam.

Yeah, I just checked Amazon JP, Box 3 goes for between 4,200 and 5,300 used.
