I never even watched Deathnote. I just read the manga. I stopped reading after that spoiler because it was so bad. This was like in 2005 right before Deathnote got licensed. Spoil the rest of the story for me.

L was part of an orphanotrophy which raises brilliant mind so 2 other guys step up on his place called Near and Mello, near basicaly plays good cop while mello plays bad cop, light gives the death note to a guy called teru, stuff happens, lot of secondary characters dies but in the end teru screws up and light gets caught

after he get's caught, ryuk tells light he's not interessed in him anymore and kills him,in the manga it's awesome and it's played execution style but in the anime, light goes all :'( and then he dies offscreen :yuck

i'm just not used to seeing such heavy handed moderation on the bore

i should probably be quiet though so that lyte edge doesn't threaten me with a shiv

Let's just get this over with:

-The anime thread and other long-running threads have been restarted before.  This isn't "heavy-handed moderation."
-This thread became the new anime thread...I just renamed it.
-No one is being stopped from making a new Akira movie thread if they want to.
-Why is this such a big deal?  It seems like people who ignored the previous thread are actually noticing this one now, too.   :lol
-None of you people bitching actively-participated in the old thread anyway.
-Spencer is, at this point, just looking to see how far he can go before he gets himself banned.   :P

EVIL MOD LAST WARNING TIME: Any further crap regarding this?  PM me.

But I'm not above recommending newer shows, in fact I just recommended several in an earlier post.

Okay, I'm curious about this, because I haven't really watched much anime. I've seen maybe a dozen movies, plus most of the Miyazaki stuff.

So in the 80s you had stuff like the original Vampire Hunter D, right? And the 90s would have had DBZ, Gundam and whatnot?

What do all the terms mean? I'm guessing harem = one male character, lots of females? And moe = pedo trash? Why did the anime studios stop catering to people who want to watch giant robots blowing shit up in favor of the dudes who want to wank to 6 year olds?

90's had just as surreal shit as the 80's. The best of the 80's were in ova's and film. That's where anime mostly blossomed and you can find the best of the craft in that decade. The best of the 90's were mostly on tv, though ova's and films were still prominent and still quality.

Gundam was popularized in the 70's/80's.

They thought moe would mean more money, in an appeal to target a specific market. but a concentration of any market always means less sales, so they've made it more of a niche than it was before. think of it like how comic books are with super hero comics. same shit, different type of audience, but similar frustrations.

Most of the problems we're talking about are mostly in regards to anime on television. ova's and movies are still high quality and just as diverse as in the past. manga is still kickn' and just as awesome as in the past. the problems we're discussing are mostly relegated to televised anime productions.

Well, I mean they've been selling anime body pillows since the dawn of weeabo. I'm sure it was a sales driven trend.. Which is disturbing. I think I need to get my hands on some of this 80s-90s animu you guys keep praising.

they thought (and still think) that the minority are what drives sales. and they do, in some way, mostly in the form of merch (like those pillows you mentioned). it doesn't help that in japan there are currently more single people than ones who are with a partner. i see the rise of the moe trend to be a completely related to such statistics.

Of course, the one outlier in all of this is One Piece.

37 million copies of the manga have been sold.

Just this year.

And it is a farcry from moe, and in actuality the spiritual successor to Dragon Ball, both in terms of sales and spirit.

Innocence was the first thing I'd seen which looked like it was basing its designs on current Shirow stylings. Many of the mech or environmental designs looked they could have been straight out of one of that era's art books or calendars.

SAC is one of the greatest anime television series of all time. GitS (first film) isn't approaching it in terms of quality. I think SAC hits the best highs of what GitS stands for, without coming off nearly as pretentious as GitS does. Then again, I haven't seen GitS since I was a teenager, but boy howdy did it put me to sleep. SAC is one of the few anime tv shows I'd ALMOST put on par with Cowboy Bebop.

How many episodes is the Ghost In The Shell tv show?

Oh and Lyte I got the Battle angel manga, will watch the movie before reading it.

The movie is a condensed version of the first two main stories.  I'd read the first few volumes of the manga first, and if you like it, watch the movie.

I'm almost done with Last Order (up to the current chapter).  It is CRAZY-LONG and has tons and tons of flashback/background stuff on multiple characters, but it's been a really fun read.

The same author also did a series called "Aqua Knight" that I'd recommend, although it is unfinished and "ends" abruptly.

For SAC, are the first and second season the same antagonist? I've caught a few episodes while it ran on adult swim years ago. I thought the antagonist who quoted catcher in the rye made a super interesting plotline.

That's the first season. The second season has a different antagonist.

I've seen some improvement over the past year or so, but it's still a far cry from the heady days of 90's TV anime and 80's OVAs/Movies.

But I'm not above recommending newer shows, in fact I just recommended several in an earlier post.

I miss the period in the early 00s when I first got decent speed broadband and was downloading everything under the sun because it was all new to me. I can't even remember half the shit I downloaded and never watched. Then everything released here locally was either robots or fighting or harem and I lost interest.

I'm completely lost on what's decent these days. I wouldn't mind picking up a new series but my time is limited. I think the last thing I started to watch was Welcome to the NHK? Oh there was also Genshiken, and I never even knew there was a second series
