I love my PC gaming but I'd rather not pass up PS4 console exclusives. If PS4 is the hardcore gaming console's last stand, I'd like to support it.

Uncharted and MGS are "hardcore games?"

Color me skeptical.

MGS is pretty hardcore.  I wouldn't touch any of the games on Extreme mode or whatever.

Uncharted is faux-core.  :smug

MGS would qualify as hardcore if half the "game" wasn't intrusive cut scene horse shit

I can see MGS being "hardcore" just because it's stealth. A lot of people that complain about the genre don't seem to have ten seconds worth of patience.

there's the challenge, the controls, the relentlessly wacky stuff, the "persistent" storyline, the need to be able to pick out the retcons in order to understand what's happening in each successive game...being a MGS fan is hard work.

Paul Thurrott thinks a Microsoft product is gonna be awesome?  Well, I guess you can take that to the bank, then, like when John Gruber gives Apple stuff the thumbs-up.

But but but he's really critical of MS  :lol

Thurrott just has bizarre mood swings. One week he'll post some ridiculously shilly hyperbolic praise / defense of something MS does, then the next week he'll post some overblown whiny inaccurate bitching about MS. He is pro-MS on average though, but mostly just isn't worth paying attention to. He seems to have some OK sources but he (or the sources) aren't always great at interpreting or understanding whatever info they have.

Eh he could do critical stuff a few times but I would honestly not give a fuck about what he says if MS stuff is the only thing he does.

We'll see how it goes though (if his info was correct and what is actually gonna be this thing called Durango/Whatever its real name is.

I really can't support an online only console despite shelling for every MS product not named the KIN.

My Windows Phone 8 works offline.

My Windows 8 PC works offline.

My Surface RT works offline.

My Office 2013 works offline.

And Paul might be right but saying that the next Xbox dev is too far and they can't revert a simple firmware switch to disable this online check is silly.

MS has been collecting metrics from Xbox Live for years right

And they've learned that we only ever use our 360s when online BECAUSE THEY HAVE NO DATA FROM WHEN WE'RE OFFLINE

It's more likely that there's been a discovery that the xbox users who aren't connected to the internet are also not purchasing very much software, and, definitively, not contributing to the value of the XBL network in any way.

I don't see a reason to even bother with the next Xbox. Bungie is off the Halo series, and H4 was good, but the series is no longer something that I absolutely must play. No other real exclusives come to mind. Forza is nice, but the next GT will likely be a perfectly adequate replacement.

How many Xbox 360-exclusive franchises were really known about in advance of the console's release, though?

How many 360 exclusive franchises ARE there, really?  The 360 benefited from having the best looking multi-console ports last gen, can't necessarily say the same for next gen because the PS4 has no cell and, well, yeah

 :gddr5

If Sony has half-way competent online infrastructure and doesn't launch the console at an idiotic price then they're halfway to winning imo.  Of course "winning" is gonna look a lot like a guy who escapes a windowless prison on the backs of his comrades, only to discover it's in the middle of a fucking desert this gen.

360 had cool stuff until the effort outweighed the gain, or something like that.

Very interested to see what will be shown.  I don't doubt that Microsoft will make some calculated choices about what is shown alongside the console.  More effort than the last couple years, at least.

How many Xbox 360-exclusive franchises were really known about in advance of the console's release, though?

Before release? A good amount and diverse too.

they got a lot of playstation franchises to go multiplatform, but all that did was make both systems look pretty much the same.   The big difference right now is PSN/XBLA titles and gears of halo, early COD content vs. Sony 1st party

Man all this negative press before even the reveal. This could be very damaging to the brand.

None of this shit will have anything to do with the success of the next xbox. You are falling into your own forum hivemind trap.

Whether the next xbox always online requirement will have some effect is a different argument though.

As usual I won't pretend to be a psychic and will wait to see how things actually play out since the forums and the internets are often utterly wrong about what people actually want or will tolerate.

I haven't seen much here or on GAF that gives me much confidence about what is going to happen or insightful thoughts about how things will play out. Especially when one console hasn't even been shown yet. Prices given. Or big games shown or announced.

In other words internet going to internet but it means nothing.

Sorry I have plenty of non splergy friends that like videogame news and hear this stuff.

Dudebro's visit game sites too.

Always online is going to be an issue, because at launch the likelihood of less than 5% of users having some issues is virtually nil.  There's GONNA be some unforeseen fuck-up and it's GONNA effect enough of the initial users to leave a very bad impression, and it's GONNA get mainstream press coverage and snow ball.

It's also obviously a sneaky, ratfucking move towards anti-used games DRM, no matter how they're trying to spin it.

This gen was already lining up to be a Thunderdome gen anyway, but hoo boy have the console manufacturers not helped matters: Nintendo by releasing a console with 2007 tech, MS with always online BS, and I'm personally still convinced Sony will try to sell the PS4 for $500 because they're Sony.  It's a good time to be a pc gamer, fellas.  Sit back on our porches and watch the neighbors murder each other.

You have a point but if MS goes with AO req they will be much much more prepared  than Sony or PC.

Don't you think this project seems so limited in scope for someone like MS? I mean they are targeting a specific set of people in North America, no more global aspirations. It doesn't look like a mass product. (i'm not saying that trying to take over the living room is a small project)

why would they be much more prepared?  you really seem to assign a great deal of confidence to the company behind Bob, Windows ME, Zune, Surface, Windows 7 Phone, Windows 8, Windows 8 Phone, Vista, and Kin.  they've had like, two successes in the last ten years.

Because they have to be?
Xbox online infrastructure is pretty good, never had any problems with it and my xbox is always online. If MS sneaked in always online req to 360,I would probably not notice it in months :-[

Not joking.

News time

http://www.theverge.com/2013/4/8/4195954/microsoft-planning-xbox-event-for-may

Quote
Microsoft had originally been planning to unveil its next-generation Xbox details at an event in April, but The Verge has learned that the company has pushed this back to May. Windows watcher Paul Thurrott revealed recently that Microsoft is planning an Xbox event for May 21st, and we understand this date is accurate. This is the tentative date for a next-generation Xbox announcement, but Microsoft had originally planned an April 24th event.

ources familiar with Microsoft's Xbox plans have revealed that the event will be at a small venue with a focus on providing the very first details on the next Xbox, codenamed Durango, and Microsoft's plans for Xbox in 2013. Recent rumors have focused on reports that Microsoft's next Xbox may require an always-on internet connection. Comments by Microsoft Studios creative director Adam Orth, asking why there was drama over the always-on rumors and telling people to #dealwithit, forced Microsoft to issue an official apology. The Verge understands that Microsoft has reminded employees that any communications about the next-generation Xbox must remain confidential, following Orth's comments.

The difference is that it'll be up to the publishers to implement activation checks, just like it is in the current generation. EA will still have their online passes, just like they do now.

That's completely different from it being hardware based.

Quote
The following is a post from Yusuf Mehdi, Corporate Vice President of Marketing, Strategy and Business for the Interactive Entertainment Business at Microsoft.

Today, Microsoft and Ericsson announced a definitive agreement for Ericsson to acquire Mediaroom, the number one IPTV platform deployed by TV operators around the world. This acquisition is mutually beneficial and strategically aligned for both parties. Ericsson will continue to invest in the growth and success of Mediaroom to the benefit of customers, employees, and the industry. It allows Microsoft to commit 100 percent of its focus on consumer TV strategy with Xbox.

We are proud of the world-class engineering and business achievements within Mediaroom. They have a rich history of driving innovation in IPTV. As early pioneers, they built the infrastructure to stream video on limited bandwidth, and today they enable multiscreen entertainment experiences for pay TV subscribers. Mediaroom has contributed to the evolution of TV and powers 22 million set-top boxes today in 11 million subscriber households.

With the sale of Mediaroom, Microsoft is dedicating all TV resources to Xbox in a continued mission to make it the premium entertainment service that delivers all the games and entertainment consumers want – whether on a console, phone, PC or tablet. And with 76 million Xbox 360 consoles around the world with 46 million Xbox LIVE members, it is a mission that gets us out of bed in the morning.

It is not a mission that we can achieve alone. We want to partner with the industry to deliver the next wave of innovation in games and consumer entertainment. We will partner with content creators, studios, labels, networks, content aggregators, operators and distributors to make this happen. We believe the future of home entertainment is one where TV becomes more simple, tailored and intelligent. We believe the best is yet to come for this industry.

Our vision and energy for the future of entertainment is more focused than ever. Stay tuned.

Since I have shit internet at home always online will definitely decide what console I get.  If both have it, I'm fucking done with gaming.

Something to consider is that the Playstation 3 already allows for always online drm.  It's similar to the region locking in that only one or two games use it.  So, while the 360 may require an internet connection to function period, there's the possibility that publishers will require an online connection to play certain games on the PS4.  That is, unless Sony changes its policy regarding all that for the Playstation 4.

Pretty much everywhere, it's going to suck.  It just might suck more on the next Xbox (assuming the rumors are true).

In short,I will stay loyal to developers that make games that I like as long as I can.
