Well, that one is a matter of definition, but we are all from GAF, and we do have a 200 page WiiU thread without even one WiiU fan actively posting anymore.  We even have a sad sack OT relationship thread.

I try to never go in that one, because THAR BE BEBPOS.

Personally, I think there are some pretty big stylistic differences between here and GAF.  Here, the inmates run the asylum.  On GAF if someone is being a twat but doing it within the confines of "the rules" then there's not much to be done for it... they get to go on being a twat.  Here, we have vigilante donkey punch member approved justice in that we can tell anyone to shut the fuck up and quit being a wanker.  Shit like that gets you banned on GAF, even if you're right about the person being a wanker.

If we had a bajillion more members like you're positing, then maybe it would be a case where the administration had clamped down and established more rules.  I think demi would totally do whatever for more money, games or pics of random bears.  I just don't think he'd follow through on whatever he promised, because he's also lazy and doesn't like to do things.  And in any event, if this place did become lame, everyone that's cool would just leave again.

Meh, enough forum navel gazing for one day.

I always thought The Bore was like another take on 2004/2005 era GAF.  Unsurprising of course, because the regulars here were posting on GAF in 2004 and 2005.

I wouldn't want a 100 of -anyone- who posts here so it's a moot question.  :tophat

basically this - whether we become GAF if we scale up seems an unlikely situation but , hey, who knows?

Bore is much better then gaf, one of the reasons is that its small so you know who is who. Also generally speaking there are a lot or smart folks here. Theres only a few losers that I wont name.

When I think of GAF I think of mega fight threads like Forza versus Gran Tourismo that go on forever in proxy wars for their various consoles. I think of people endlessly posting vaguely disguised agenda posts over and over again. I think of people taking extreme positions on issues because its easier to argue against extremes. I think of a small percentage of posters hijacking threads so topics are dominated by who is willing to post the most. I think of an excessive amount of navel gazing about industry issues rather than people actually talking about games they play. I think of authority backed up by a history of bannings to enforce compliance.

Is that the only thing GAF offers. Of course not. There is of course overlap between us and GAF. It's a videogame forum mostly populated by a similar age group (The bore is slightly older) with similar interests in tech, videogames, movies, etc. All forums would be alike in that regard. But there is a difference between GAF and thebore.  And when I say something is a GAF thread I definitely have a very clear sense of what that means to me. But since I'm entering into the navel gazing myself, I'll stop and just a take a little retirement from the next gen thread. Something else I like about the bore is that people practice policing themselves when things start to annoy them.

The next gen thread as it is sucks because it is talking about rumors that have little (or coincidental) credibility.

His back goes out every once in a while and I have to give him a pain pill.  He'll usually sleep for most of a day and then he's fine again.  I either need to build him a ramp down the back steps or move somewhere where there are no steps for him to go down to go outside.

I really think that sadly the only major difference between GAF and here is a simple matter of size.  If the Bore had like 7000 active members at any given time it'd be just as distinguished mentally-challenged as GAF.  Instead of one Methodis, there would be one hundred.  Instead of one salesfag, there would be one hundred.  Instead of a couple of scattered Nintards, there would be a thousand.  It's all very frightening stuff.

Don't forget the draconian moderation.

Alan Wake, PGR, Kameo are all awesome. Most Sony games arent that exciting, except for Wipeout.

The on going GAF/SIZE thing - it's somewhat moot because i don't see us spontaneously becoming Tha New HOT - but there -are- some grass root differences.

The idea that "if we let our numbers swell by letting in random crazies" or pointless internet trolls (current occupants excepted) then of course we'd become overrun with noise and crap. But that's the fundamental difference - so the argument of "Well, if we opened up the doors then we'd be just like GAF" is true but it's just a non-argument; we are different by virtue of size and memebership and moderation policy

On MS and Sony - i really don't care until i start seeing some software that is of interest. I really couldn't give less of a crap about Halo at this point in time, see also : Gears, Fable, GT, GTA, Uncharted, Arsearseins Creed, etc.

New ideas please.

We have a membership policy?  I was pretty sure one of the few differentiating points of the Bore beyond simple scale is that anyone can just walk in anytime.

But sure, we never have to worry about the size problem.  I only bring it up because we really shouldn't let it get to our heads that discussion is generally more tolerable here than there.  It's not because any of us are special.

Yea I remember this board wanted a non-"free" email account at some point and it took some time until I was approved (wasn't that long though)

i think the "are we gaf discussion" plunges this lower than dumb little jabs about the next xbox.

Lets all unite and talk about how the "Next Generation Revealed" MTV thing is going to be revered by historians as the early to mid 00s completely summarized in one video.

  • Pimp my xbox kicking off the whole "customization and personalization" aspect of the system. which boiled down to replacing an awkward maxi-pad shaped piece of plastic on just the front of the console and nothing else.   Most of them had tacky designs.  Remember the woodgrain one? Jesus.
  • "youth culture" - all these people paid to stand around and have fun
  • Elijah Wood paid to awkwardly be like "yeah i'm a gamer..."
  • THE WORLD'S FIRST PDZ DEATHMATCH! that you saw absolutely none of, except the people paid to watch it were having the time of their lives.  The fragdolls were in attendance.  Remember them?
  • To cap it all off, the Killers, whose lead singer looked mortified, as the last bits of his soul were sucked out of him live on TV.
  • Once it was over, you stopped and realized you didn't know a whole lot more about the 360 than before.

It was one of those "shit, is this what it means to be a gamer?!" existential moments.  The focus group just had some kind of satanic orgy and this is the result.

And then the 360 came out and they were all broken and it was just not that interesting for a long while.

I still say Kameo was gorgeous and awfully playable for a launch title.  Yeah, it had the usual shit Rare character design and sloppy gameplay design, but it was a beautiful game that was more than satisfying as a launch adventure.

yeah, the other factor was that people (Xbots to a good extent, Sony fans to off-the-charts levels) were drunk on CG showings that they thought they were getting real-time in game from day 1.

Kameo is a looker - some of the darker levels looked incredibly good. I might go back and check it out and see how it stands up

yeah those games looked good, better than all the other Xbox HD ports that were there at launch.  but my point stands, glossy bricks were really overdoing it.

Condemned...now that was a damn good launch title.  CoD2 was also mind blowing since I had never played a CoD game before.

The first 6 months of Xbox 360 were awesome.  Dead Rising.  Oblivion.  PDZ.  Kameo.  Condemned.  Others I know I've forgotten.  But those specifically I played quite a bit.  I spent ungodly amounts of time on Oblivion and Dead Rising.

NFS Most Wanted was fucking awesome too (I think it is way better than the 2012 Most Wanted game).  I had a Japanese 360 (since the American 360s were next to impossible to find) and played a lot of Dynasty Warriors 5 Special as well.

The first GRAW came out in the first few months too.  The 360 had a great start.

Dead Rising was the following August.

I know because I didn't like Oblivion or GRAW and had to wait a very long time for a new game, with a SF2 Turbo port to tide me over.  I tried to get really excited about Table Tennis and it was good, but that didn't hold my attention for very long.

My first game was Gears, was really interested in it since I was a long-time fan of Epic. The game looked nice at the time, since it was my first time experiencing HD gaming (and this was before every single game had that overly bumpmapped, gritty visual Unreal 3 look)... but I never liked the gameplay.
