It's down a bit from the previous mainline entries [last three were 2.6, 2.0, and 1.9], but some of that difference could be made up for with the digital versions.

???

It sold 2 million (with digital) so it's only down Vs Sun Moon. Which was released during the peak of Pokémon Go

Anyway, here's some global numbers:

Quote
The Pokémon Company announced today that Pokémon Sword and Shield has sold over six million units globally in its first week. That includes both digital and physical sales since the game’s release date on November 15.

Quote
BusinessWire also reports that two million copies were sold in the first two days in the US, making it the highest-grossing launch in the US for any Pokémon game. That could put it on track to sell four million copies faster than Pokémon Sun and Moon, which previously set the record for a Nintendo game sales in the United States.

For an additional comparison, the 2013's Pokémon X and Y sold four million units across the globe in its first week, while last generation's Pokémon Sun and Moon reportedly sold 7.2 million in its first week according to Eurogamer.

In any case, Nintendo titles have insane attach rates, while 3rd party stuff sells like shite, more news at 11.

Meanwhile in America:

Quote
Switch and Switch Lite systems sold a combined total of more than 830,000 units in the United States from November 24 to 30, according to Nintendo data, ranking as the single best week of U.S. sales in Switch history, Nintendo announced.

Cyber Monday broke records as well, becoming the best one yet for Switch.

Nintendo also announced several updated Switch game lifetime sales numbers for the Americas, including:

Pokemon Sword / Pokemon Shield – three million units
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – 8.5 million units
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate – eight million units
Super Mario Odyssey – 6.5 million units
New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe – 1.5 million units

Total sales of Switch hardware in the Americas have surpassed 17.5 million units.

Switch lite seems to not be cannibalising sales of the full fat switch in Japan. Rather it's just added to the baseline. I wonder if that's the same everywhere else?

I don't know, but the lite is a significant downgrade. It's positioned as a device for kids or as a secondary device. It's reasonable that it's not eating all that much into the target group that is interested in the full Switch experience which made up most of their sales until now.

https://animalcrossingworld.com/2020/04/animal-crossing-new-horizons-sells-2-68-million-physical-japanese-copies-in-first-10-days/

10-day update: 2.68 million physical copies sold in Japan

Update: ACNH has sold 3 million physical copies in Japan in its first three weeks, according to Media Create.

Switch hardware has sold 830,000 additional units in the same timeframe.

Speculation that it's the best opening for a Switch game in Japan.

I knew AC was popular but had no idea how huge it was. People who I never even heard once mention games are all clamoring for a Switch, and complaining how they're now super rare. Last time I heard about this craziness about a game from non-gamer people was... Wii Sports and Wii Fit.

That bit about it being the best-selling console game in 10 years is ridic. Off the back of physical sales only.

RIDIC
Oh hey I have an anecdote about digital AC sales being massive that I'm not sure if I've shared here or not. A little bit ago I went and looked through amazon's top switch games and AC digital was #1 with physical at #3. People love them some animal island sim.

It's estimated that 5 million digital copies of Animal Crossing were sold just in March:

That 5 mil number is underselling it a little.

Quote
Animal Crossing: New Horizons sold more digital units in a single month (5.0M) than any console game in history. The Nintendo-published title broke the console record for monthly digital game sales previously held by Call of Duty: Black Ops IIII. Animal Crossing: New Horizons also roughly matched the first-month digital sales of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Pokémon Sword and Shield put together. The game’s combination of social features and a relaxing setting likely appealed to individuals stuck at home. Closures of brick and mortar stores also meant that a higher share of consumers purchased the game digitally compared to past Switch titles.

Won't be long before the Animal Crossing economy is bigger than the world economy. I imagine that its digital market place already has a higher market value than a number of countries  :doge
