1. You have a lot of talent.
2. This is the first post I legitimately felt like "liking" (sorry guys).
3. How hard/expensive is it to give a design to a t-shirt company and have them print it for you?

Dunno. 20, 30 bucks? But since I had access to the equipment, I just had to try it for myself while I could. It was a fun experience.

So I just left art school a few weeks ago and this was pretty much the best thing I did while I was there:

When I first did it I was very happy with it, now I'm like it could be better.

I like the splash/puddle.

This thread just made me realize I never finished the painting I was supposed to make for my dad's birthday... Which was almost two months ago. I can't even remember where I put the painting after the last time I did something with it. I should be posting in the procrastination thread.

I am using the most standard paper for sketching in Japan. It's okay, not great. The inking is through a brush pen. I used to do fountain pens but they tend to gum up on me. I also liked koh-I-noor pens, but they encourage my bad tendency to noodle on detail.

Like this one a lot.  You should sign the bottom right corner - not just to put your name on it but it feels like it's the missing piece to a complete drawing.

The hooded woman on the top right has potential to be an interesting piece on its own.  The symbol above her head is distracting though - her figure and stance alone seem more than enough to dominate and stand on its own.  The halo around her head is fine though - it adds a certain balance and (dare I say) slight religious/fantasy overtones as well without taking away from the main subject.  Can I ask why you didn't decide to finish her right leg/foot?  I think it would really add a lot of length and elegance to extend her leg and foot into the light and towards the viewer.  Her arms also seem a bit short - her fingers should extend beyond the sleeves.  Overall I like how you weren't afraid to really work up the contrast on that one - especially on the upper half of the drawing.

Have you tried shading by the "pick up" method (I don't actually know the official name or if it even has one) where you shade in an entire subject then you use erasers to whiten the parts where the light hits.  Kneadable erasers work really well for this.  I like using the white Staedtler erasers for the really bright spots.

It's pretty common - very effective for adding "drama".

Here is an exercise I did while in school using that technique:

Do not try if you are afraid to get a little dirty!

The source image had her arms concealed by the cloak. As for the bottom of her legs: I could barely make them out because the shadow was so dark. I could probably reference another model in a similar pose in order to flesh out the cloaked woman some more.

As for the symbol: I agree it's a bit much. It was a spur of the moment kind of thing just to see what she would look like with some sort of sigil above her head.

I'm familiar with this technique but I'll admit I was half-assing these figures when it came to their shading & highlights.

It's been a while since I've drawn something other than logos and web page layouts so I'm a bit rusty with figure drawing. I'm trying to get better at it so I can do a decent job with the character designs for the webcomic my brother and I are starting to work on.

It's not like I'm painting acrylics on translucent mylar, or even breaking out a light board, I'm just exporting individual layers of a Pixelmator doc as PNG, to preserve transparency.

I've always admired cel animators; sad to think the art is dying off.

Actually I was looking back at the pyp thread here a couple of days ago and decided to doodle Raban for some reason (totes not a creep) but I'd have to put some more effort into it before I could post it. And I don't really have much time or access to a proper camera or a scanner except on some weekends. Also, excuses.

Keepin' at it! Good on you.

I notice you're drawing individual frills on your trim; in much the same way you're not trying to draw each individual hair, and draw its form instead, consider the same for frill, lace, fur, and anything else which creates a volume.

I usually run away scared from color; I stick with line drawings and feel like a coward for it. I should explore similarly.

For what it's worth, the tip about drawing volume, and not getting crazy detailed even where it appears detailed came from George Perez. His stuff is very detailed, but he revealed that he actually just scribbles around for detail, implying it all rather than rendering each detail.

In contrast Geoff Darrow appears to draw every molecule.

Whoa the thread was updated recently and I almost missed it.

Let's try something different, instead of posting things that I've done, how about work-in-progress? It would help make me settle on the final direction of a particular pic.

So lately, I've drawn pics with warm colors, where shades of bright red to yellow dominate. For a project involving Virtua Cop 2, I thought I could use tall grey buildings, blue skies and lots of shadows, the perfect excuse for lots of cool colors. The drawing is not finished (hair, blacks and details like smoke are not really dealt with). But when playing with color settings, I tend to like the yellow tint look better. I also tend to prefer the cropped look, even if it eliminates many of the peripheral details, it makes the pic more focused and the character doesn't get lost.

What do you think? Feel free to add any CC while you're at it, though the drawing can obviously not be majorly redone at this point.

I definitely prefer the cooler colors. If this is for Virtua Cop you're doing that game's stark, vividly colorful visuals a disservice with that much warmth. Also with an ass like that I don't think you have to worry about the character getting lost. She's there alright.

Overall a really fucking awesome piece that makes me want to go to an arcade right now and get my guncon on.
