What program?

Painting should be more comfortable if you have experience with traditional media, such as watercolor, acrylic, oils, chalk. I was trained to be a traditionalist first, so I'm finding the digital transition to be going really smoothly. If you're struggling with digital painting, go back and review the basics. :)

But it could also be the program. I neglected use of my Wacom for months because I only had photoshop and I think photoshop is DREADFUL for digi painting.

Nope. Either I'm too drunk, or your painting style are too simpletons. I can't upload a simple pic. Maybe when I.m sober., and damn.

I know studio arts, but I find that even while doing studio arts shapes and lines more appealing and blending and shading end up to be a chore. Now I do know how to shade with solid shapes and crosshatching, but the digital painting is one of my weaknesses. My Painting teacher said I paint as if I'm drawing. Which is kind of a spot on description of me when I paint/color.

I'm trying to work on my weaknesses as an artist.

My favorite type of shot is a portrait, so when I draw I tend to draw portraits as opposed to the body. One of the main reasons I drew the cowboy piece the way I did was to work on my weaknesses. If it's a weakness, you can only go up.

ah this is why most of my drawings are ignored on DA. I love short hair and I think extreme boobs on girls is unattractive.

hmm knowing that this is your first time gives me motivation to break out of being too afraid to do landscapes and backgrounds. I always hold myself back from growing it seems.

Yeah, Cintiqs aren't cheap. But the difference between drawing onscreen versus drawing on a tablet and trying to match your hand movements on a tablet to a screen is remarkable.

Also, if you have doubts about trying a particular subject, start with a tutorial. It can be really helpful. However, if you get halfway through the tutorial and it seems like crap, go find a different tutorial and start over rather than give up!

I've never been artsy. I spend long periods not drawing anything, often years. But all those crude parody pics I'm known for around these parts was a way for me to get out of my more recent rut. I still don't have time to apply myself and do long projects, but once in a while, I squeeze in something that takes more than the usual 15 minutes.

I'm not sure what to show here, but I'm assuming most here are gamers so maybe fan-art is most appropriate? I'm big on classic beat-em-ups/brawlers so hopefully, some of you are too.

Here's one piece I call... Streets of Rage Max Thunder!

Here's a cuddlier piece called... Double Dragon!

All those were done in the last 6-8 months. There's more, but let's see how this forum reacts first.

Cool.

But it depends on how big the pic needs to be to meet your printing needs.

I'm away for Easter and on this computer, I only have access to a bigger, wallpaper-sized version (1440x900).

http://i.imgur.com/wegpu.jpg

I don't think the original TIFF master file is really that much bigger. I knew the one most people would see was the small one.

I'm taking an Digital Media class as an elective course. I posted some of my assignment submissions on FB. They're not perfect, as most were done a few hours before the deadline, but I sorta like them. I've never created a full work in Illustrator from scratch before this class. I feel so stupid now.

Pretty good, especially for you first time at illustrator. It has a learning curve but if you're used to PS, it's pretty easy to grasp. Really enjoy the lining in the self portrait.

Thanks.

We were handed some Wacom pen tablets for the self-portrait assignment and told to take whatever approach we prefer. It was my first time using one, and I was instantly blown away. It was so freaking intuitive and easy. All the pressure and tilt sensitive features made me wanna cry. I've wasted so many hours in the past to fake brush strokes that could have literally taken seconds using one of these.

I'm buying one as soon as I get paid this month. I haven't figured which one I'm getting, but I'm leaning towards the Bamboo.

The one from the hometown is the most impressive, however. You say you had a few hours to do it? Did you apply the filter that makes 3d images 2d and make it two color or did you craft it by hand? Either way, it's a great piece. Very sleek and stylish and reminds me of Killer 7.

As for Wacom, I have a Bamboo and have no complaints. If you're left handed like me, you may be more comfortable putting it on right handed mode - for some reason I find default left handed mode to be weird as shit and right hand mode lets me draw like I can with pen and paper.

And yeah, seriously. Using a wacom for the first time made me want to die in ecstasy. It had everything I love about traditional with the mix of digital.

Since that was my first illustrator piece, it took the longest to complete (around 8 hours?).

60% of that time went into drawing the annoying tower, especially the intricate top part. Which left very little time to accurately draw the rest of the picture, and that's why I decided to black out the walkway's interior. The only instance I used PS was to add the tile texture on the floor and peeling paint on the red wooden planks.

If you have money, consider a Cintiq. Seriously, the difference is almost the same again as moving from mouse-to-tablet. Drawing on the monitor screen is much nicer than trying to make the mark on a tablet and watch it happen on a different surface.

A major problem with Cintiq, aside from the price, is that it's just a touch sensitive screen. You're still tettered to some computer. Maybe that's ok for people who are stuck at home or at some artistic office, but it doesn't cut it for any hobbyist.

I'd rather deal with a Windows tablet with touch/pen sensitive screen. Convenience, portability and you actually get your money's worth by having an actual computer built-in.

can't see the last linked image :(

One thing that I wish Sman had done in his two pieces was make the lines have verying widths. Like what if stuff further away had thinner lines while things closer up had thicker lines?

As for me I did start coloring the lineart I posted in her earlier. But I stopped playing with it for now. Right now I'm working on a business card and a vector Illustration.

Outside of that I am remaking my portfolio website. This summer I will be doing a Photography portfolio site/blog for a close friend of mines.

The DD piece has no line art in the background. It's mostly vector graphics and they're blurred on top of that to make the characters in the foreground "pop". Line art is not necessary everywhere.

I was actually trying to describe an example of how someone might play with line width in an image.

Also that is perfect if its all vector art since its easy to change line width in the stroke menu (I see lines on the people. Right now the lines are all the same width).

I got that.

Everything is handdrawn and inked first, then scanned. Sometimes, I decide to switch to vectors for some areas, but I don't work in Illustrator, I work directly on PS for everything (the old PS7 no less). It limits my options (like lines), but I prefer not to switch programs during a project, particularly when done in one go.

But the other project, if you want to get anal about it, has something like half the outlines not visible since everything is so dark. If we're talking about doing things differently, all the lines could have ditched. I think the coloring on the character would have had to be changed a bit, but yeah, it would have worked.

no point in talking to you about anything else dude. You can't even take a damn suggestion without getting defensive (it wasn't even a critique mind you). A true artist would not get defensive from one small suggestion.

If all you want is someone to stroke your ego...well its not going to come from me. On to the next.
