The Bore's Art Thread: Where we all pretend we're Picasso
« on: March 06, 2012, 09:13:24 PM »
I've started work on a new piece. I've been tooling with the sketch for the past 30 or so minutes mainly because the image is 24x18 in 300 ppi, so Painter is taking forever for any actions to register, haha.

I'm not sure about a few things:

1. The right leg. The goal is to make the painting feel abstract in terms of human biology, very loose and spidery almost. The thin leg probably "looks" better now but the thicker leg/butt gives the piece a more abstract feel, but probably too abstract. I'm leaning on the thin leg, but I'd like opinions of how to approach the leg. I can't continue doing the belt until I decide on something.

2. The "pencil" holster. I originally had the pencil's end exposed because while most holsters don't show the gun's barrel while inside a holster, it'd be weird having the pencil's eraser end sticking out - what if it's not identifiable? Still, having the granite end sticking out felt weird. What do you guys think on that?

When a saw something with an arrow pointing to it that said "thick or thin" I just automatically assumed it was a penis.

I see no one is interested in helping my out with my sketch. I'm going with the thick leg.

Tonight I opened up my art textbooks for the first time in years and decided to study some Marc Chagall since his work is a clear use of inspiration for this piece.

The main inspiration for this piece comes from Mind Game. The abstraction and unique use of perception and motion make it a winner. This film has always inspired me, so I'd like to raise my confidence by experimenting something similar.

I always enjoyed how the body shape of the characters in the more 'sketchy' scenes are like big fat blobs. Thinking about it, the thicker leg is more Mind Game-ish.

Look at these fucking proportions.  :o

And the background is such an elaborate display of fauvism.

Holy fuck.

The brush strokes on the background and foreground. The blend of impressionist zeal (the bar! the stools!) with abstract characters with the touch of expressionism/fauvism. Holy shit, I forgot how raw this film feels. It doesn't feel clean like other animation and it doesn't attempt to look "pretty".

Stringer, are you talking about forced perspective re:the leg ? To be honest, without a little more detail on said leg, its hard to offer any helpful advice.

Probably not any real help, but if you're serious about improving your art skills, Life Drawing is far and away the most challenging form of learning, but on the flipside you will really see a marked difference in your ability. And yes, I know what I'm talking about bitchiz.

Thanks!

Improve your art skills by drawing anything you can get your hands on. Get a piece of fruit. Draw it. Don't like how it turned out? Draw it again. Then draw it a third time for good measure. The first sketch is actually good. You have curves down. It's a lot more thorough than what I feel most people think they're capable of. The biggest suggestion is confidence. It may not seem like much even good artists have confidence issues, and overcoming your fear of failure and experimenting is the biggest step.

Drawing is just one aspect of art.

I'll just copy and paste what Ed Catmull of Pixar said before:

Ed Catmull, President of  Pixar and Disney Animation Studios [on what skills will be valuable for artists of the upcoming century]

"Fundamental art and science skills: drawing, color, composition, lighting, study of motion. Every studio encounters people who think they can become an artist without developing those skills. Wrong."

Because you're lacking in one area does not mean you're not in one, or two, or even three areas.

I'd just run with the colour-blindness thing and do whatever looks right to you.  It'll certainly give your pics a unique quality.

I used to draw when I was a kid, but I have very little artistic ability when it comes to drawing or painting.  But since anyone with a computer can "do art" I did these couple of boards for a recent SSX fan-submission thing.

These are actually pretty cool. You say you have no artistic ability but those flower compositions are pretty good, though the first one is lacking something, I'm not sure what, the second one is a great use repetition. I like the music one a lot too, though the center is really loud! I bet if you drew that one like you did the flowers you'd see some pretty cool things. Your sense of repetition is good, but the composition could use a bit more work. Like the first flower one is cool, but the design doesn't go anywhere. In the second one, it'd be awesome you like, had a boarder peaking his/her's head out from the pile of flowers. That's a pretty Kaori-ish board.

Thanks alot for the feedback, I wasn't expecting it but it's really interesting to hear an opinion on them.

The rider peeking out would be cool, but would take me so long it wouldn't be funny - being a noob, these boards already took me hours and hours as it was.    I agree my flower board doesn't really go anywhere, I had a vague day and night thing going on, but that was an afterthought.  And goddam, now that I look at it after not seeing it for a while, that first board is frickin' busy!  The centre is pretty overpowering, I initially made a better looking one while mucking about, but it was unusable because of scale or something.  When I tried to replicate it, I couldn't. :lol  Thanks again for the feedback dude.

I'm still painting my cowboy piece. I've been re-doing it over and over until I get a feel for my tools and brushes. It's between Acrylic and oil, but for what I want to do I'm leaning on acrylic.

Watercolor is weird in Painter.

I don't like how it leaves dry paper.

Example:

I'm usually fond of texture, but in this case, I am hating it.

Acrylic is great if it's a one time thing, but oils are better if you have the propensity to take a break and iterate. Like Nintendo and those other guys. Oh Apple. I hate fucking Apple, my girl is more like a melon. Trailer Park Boys.

In traditional media I prefer oils. Since I'm working in digital, the process is completely different for me and I'm appreciating different things about different types of paints.

Well, the Rashida Jones painting was realistic. This is supposed to be abstract, so I'm painting it in a completely different manner.

I really like that painting so yeah keep doing whatever your doing.

Here is an old drawing I gave up on. This is my sorry attempt at digital painting. I feel more comfortable with solid shadows/colors than blending. I enjoy focusing on lines.
