All the Arya stuff was great. I love The Tickler, great performance. I also like the change with Tywin at Harenhel instead of you-know-who.

spoilers from this season:

spoiler (click to show/hide)
I don't like this at all, in the books Arya only glimpsed Lord Tywin from afar and when the time came to claim her deaths she only choose the people that where directly affecting her, it will be hard for me to buy that she won't name his brother's most dangerous adversary while she interacts with him everyday.
[close]

I also have the same problem as Beb with the added scenes, 99% of them are garbage and I would rather they would have spent those minutes they wasted with yet another Ros scene( I guess she gives great head) into making the parley scene...good.

And this Asha fucking SUCKS! I can't believe they turned one of my favorite characters into an ugly unfunny tomboy.

99% of the new scenes are garbage? Come on. A lot work in terms of condensing the story. The only new scene I had a major problem with this ep was Robb and "Talisa" which I won't go into too much. I found it rather odd that Robb would help a Lannister soldier in front of his army; that was out of character to me, and something done just to give him interaction with the nurse.

I liked Littlefinger's scenes with Renly and especially Margery. I also liked his scene with Cat. Outside of the horrible accent changes, those were great scenes.

I liked the Davos scene with Stannis. There seemed to be some slight remorse in Stannis' face over the war that's about to happen. And while he isn't as stern as in the books, I have no problem with making his emotions more complex.

Arya's point of view feels different on the show than how the other characters are presented. Like its laser focused and impactful

Part of it is how compelling the material is, how true it has been to the books (overall), and how good Maise Williams is; she's the most impressive child actor I've seen in a long time. I've always said if done right, her arc in ACOK could be the best thing on television. It started a tad shaky but has rebounded significantly.

The Greyjoy stuff is also very focused and impressive, as is Tyrion's stuff. Whereas so far the Robb stuff seems pretty inconsistent and scattered.

The Davos scene was fine because they needed to tell his story about his fingers and smuggling/hero life somewhere.

The more I think about it, (BOOK SPOILERS)
spoiler (click to show/hide)
-The end of the ep doesn't make much sense.  They're birthing the shadow baby under the walls of Storms End in the ep, which made sense in the book because it was going up through the walls to kill the castle guard of Storms End.

-Also showing the shadow baby BEFORE the Renly scene is stupid.  In the book, the Renly scene was probably the biggest OH SHIT moment in the series because it's totally unexpected and out of nowhere and no one (even the reader) knows what is going on when it happens.  I guess they feel the audience is too stupid and needs to be shown the shadow before hand.

-And if they cut out Storms End completely, that just kind of sucks because it was good Stannis development.

-Also the show didn't do a good job at setting up Stannis on land.  In the book there's a lot of build up of Stannis on Dragonstone and everyone else in the realm going "where's he heading with his army??" and then he sets sail and you don't know where and you're expecting him to show up at Kings Landing and then BAM, STANNIS APPEARS at Storms End face to face with Renly's army and suddenly things go from slow jolly pace to ratching it up to 10.  Most people I've talked to who haven't read the book and are watching the show don't even understand that Stannis is an important character.  He just seems like another general guy because the show has done a bad job as building up his importance in the series.

ACOK spoilers
spoiler (click to show/hide)
-I thought Renly's death was one of the more anticlimatic parts of the novel. I felt cheated given how interesting things had gotten once Stannis reached Storm's End...then it just ended with a quick death that made little sense at the time.

We know the same magic used to kill Renly and the Storm's End steward, I'm fine with how it was done. It's another example of condensing the story, saving time, and making sense. In the grand scheme of things, the Storm's End steward/guard was not important.

-I do agree that Stannis' arrival made little sense. One minute Renly is talking to LF, next minute Stannis is suddenly on land and talking to him. There was no "Stannis is here!" moment, in fact there is no note on his arrival at all.

The show has done a good job building up Stannis imo. He's mentioned multiple times throughout season 1, and has had some good scenes this season.

it's pretty obvious that if something is spoiler tagged, it's book spoilers. I can understand if someone posted untagged spoilers for ASOS or a later book, but this thread is solely about ACOK...

EW.com: HBO's 'Veep' opens solid; 'Girls,' 'Thrones' steady
Quote
While the fourth episode of this year’s Game of Thrones was yet again mostly steady, delivering 3.7 million for its first airing and 4.6 million overall (up just a tick overall from last week, in fact). Season to date, Thrones is averaging a whopping 10.4 million views on all HBO platforms.

The show is definitely better than the books.  All you larpers and other "hard core" fans can stfu and suck on the success.  Also, when the books don't get finished because Martin dies and they decide to finish the show, it will become canon!  Double suck it!

Like many adaptations of large works, there is far too much information being sped through (sometimes poorly) for it to be called better than the actual book; same applies to LOTR.  There are many things the show does right, some of which I like better than in the bloated novels, but overall the show is not nearly as good. I didn't expect it to be either - it's unfilmable.

I can't think of any adaptations I felt were better than the novel (off the top of my head)

I know hating on Martin is kind of your thing so I won't really be trolled here. I know you liked the first three books a lot, but prefer the utter mess that is Malazan.

I haven't read the books - yet.  Don't want to spoil anything.  I'll go back to them after the series is over.

One thing however, I was reading a review of episode 3 and they mention how the baptism of Theon Greyjoy differs from the book.  In the book he's literally drowned and then brought back to life.  IMO that should've been in there instead of him getting showered with water from a jug.

But anyway, yeah.  Smoke babies.  Another series I've been sucked into featuring smoke monsters.  Hopefully this will have a better ending.

I'd imagine they'll cut some things out, as the visual medium is less subtle than reading. It'll be very interesting getting new viewer's thoughts on that scene. I can't see it making much sense to people (unless the writers make it super blatant which I doubt), given how condensed the story has been
