Or get a really old motorcycle and a really old gun and start a gang.

What's the reason you can't?

It is really fun if you're a tinkerer. So many little things for you to work on and improve. Lots of experimentation if you decide to go further and mod them or reload your own ammo. Also, people who actually shoot and not just bro collect Glocks and AR's tend to be really nice and welcoming.

It's mostly that I don't trust myself with gun access.

I love the tinkering aspect the most. I love shit like that and I like the idea of shooting targets. Never anything living.

For the price of a nice AR you could get an old motorcycle. Much more rewarding hobby and people don't think you're (as much of) a weirdo.
"think"?  You are a weirdo!

Hello GunBore, I'm looking to buy my first handgun in the next couple of months.  :doge

I'm in need of something that's low profile, easy to use, easy to maintain, and reasonable in price.

i've been to the range three times in the past few weeks. shooting is hard but people tell me i'm a natural but i have no idea how to read the targets paper. going from shooting my first gun (as an adult) to going to the range just to try out handgun rentals to make my decision is pure himuro form but i've been fully persuaded by the pro-gun side and think it's the right decision. I'm now firmly pro-gun after kind of being on the fence for so long.

are you looking to carry? That's my end goal.

some of the more popular reasonably priced and good handguns are:

Smith and Wesson M&P Shield 9

I've tried this is in 7 round mag form and 8 round mag form and prefer 8 round but this depends on the laws of your state.

Springfield XD9

Glock 19

Sig Sauer p938

Additional tips:

any gun you're interested in chances are Hickok45 has a video on it. He's the most trusted gun reviewer on the internet. He's the old guy I've posted review videos of.

any gun you're interested in, look for a range that allows rental and just shoot it and see how you like it. Look at and shoot multiple guns before purchase.

finally, take a handgun course (preferably NRA) before you go to a range so you know what you're doing and aren't as intimidated.

What is a reasonable price and what do you plan to use it for?  Home defense?  Concealed carry?  Plinking at the range?  Competition shooting?

I recommend a 1911 to everyone because they're beautiful works of art.

$500 to $600 range
Home defense initially. Concealed carry potentially.

Get a glock
For your price range and all things considered this is probably your best bet. Good resale value, easy as shit to maintain and reliable.

Make sure to go shoot one though. Some people don't like the way certain guns feel and so don't shoot them well. That shouldn't be much of an issue with a gen 4 that has the different back straps though.

Personally I just think they're ugly as sin but I'm not really into handguns. I only like revolvers and 1911s. I'm more of a wood stock bolt action rifle guy.

I didn't realize that aesthetics was a major factor in our shopping here. I thought we were looking for "something that's low profile, easy to use, easy to maintain, and reasonable in price." If so, buy a Glock. How would you even know what is impressive about a handgun in the first place, Queen of Ice? No offense, but you just shot one for the first time recently.

We are all affected by our subjective biases so maybe my opinion is as good as anyone else's, but I've carried a few different handguns professionally in high threat environments. For Pallando's purposes (and yours, actually) I recommend a Glock.

I know I just shot one for the first time, but I just didn't like how the glock felt though I did like its thumb groove.

And aesthetics do matter in some form to me. It's not the ultimate decider but I just didn't like the glock. I'm willing to give it another try.

You should try different sizes/calibers to see what shoots well for you. Even two seemingly identical 9mms can feel totally different. My only gun is a basic-nerd mosin so I'm not an expert on anything much less handguns which I've only shot once.

Also since no one is asking, why do you feel like you need a gun pallando? They're fun but you'll be a little paranoid about safety for a while and it's something you'll probably keep from most people in real life if you randomly get resting bitch face like myself.

It would match my future dystopia aesthetic.   :doge

But no, I'm getting one because there might come a time when I start traveling to remote locations and I need something that I can have on me incase I get into some deep shit with an animal or something else.

Also, I think guns are cool and I always wanted one.  :doge

Yup the rifle. Mine was made in 1943 and I bought it at Big 5 for like $160 3 years ago. It is like one step above a sten gun in crudeness of construction which gives it charm imo. It even came with a bayonet. /bygoneera :doge

Nothing you can really do unfortunately if talking to him doesn't work. I know acquaintances that do the same and they're ridiculously unfamiliar with when it's appropriate to even defend yourself with deadly force. It's scary talking to them

Since this thread has more activity right now than ever I guess I'll throw in that I hit the range today and i think im finally somewhere that I'll feel confident getting into an IDPA competition. I'll probably join my first in January. I hope the ten year olds that compete don't completely embarrass me

ruger precision rifle is an AR, no? I shot an AR pistol the other day when someone had one there and...I want one. Not now or anything, because I'm still new but eventually. Very fun to shoot.

That Ruger Precision is an AR platform but it’s large caliber and bolt action. It’s not like what you shot.

I realize that. I'm curious what AR platform means. Do they just mean aesthetic? I know it's a BAR and not the same thing.

You realize what? If you know the answers why ask questions? You might confuse people abbreviating bolt action rifle like that.

AR platform means that it has the same general outer construction (in this case everything but the bolt, bolt carrier, barrel) as all ARs can be modified with universal parts.

Okay. I wasn't saying the ar I shot the other day was the same thing or try to imply it. I knew that the gun was a bolt action rifle but I was curious if it was an ar type of BAR. Because I had never seen a BAR of that type. I'm used to old wooden BAR's so "AR platform" was just kind of weird to me. For that kind of money you could buy an actual AR, so I figured it was a different type of that gun because there's a bunch of customization options out there already. After all, there are semi automatic rifle handguns. If AR-15 is so customizable what's stopping them from making AR-15 BAR?

You got confused because the post was badly written in terms of formatting and description.

Making a bolt action AR doesn't really make sense since the AR design is defined largely by the action - charging handle, bolt carrier group design, etc. Rugers rifle just allows you to use standard accessories and some parts like triggers or hand guards. It's an advantage because of how readily available and relatively inexpensive those parts are.

It does come with a nice adjustable comb and stock. But I'd spend that money elsewhere for a bench rest precision rifle. That's more of what I am into by the way. My next rifle will be a 6.5 CM bolt action for long distance (300+ yards) shots.

BAR = Browning Automatic Rifle

I’ve never heard anyone call a bolt-action a BAR.

Quote

I don’t understand your question because the one you pointed out is that.

If I was going to buy a bolt-action, I’d buy a Remington 700. There’s a long distance marksmanship course in Arizona I’m supposed to go to with a friend I was in Afghanistan with, but it required you own a scoped rifle. When I go, that’s what I’m going to get.

Since I know you're already badass, what is long distance for you? I have a 700 in .270 with a Leupold vx-ii which I can easily hit a 5 inch steel plate at 300 yards. That's as far as my range goes out to unfortunately.

Up to 1400 yards. Technically, the Army still requires you to qualify out to 300 meters with iron sights. (Though I've used magnified optics on official qualifications and you can still score "expert" even missing the 300m target four times.) For the Marines its 500 m!

Wow! Man that is awesome. I'd love to work my way up to that skill level one day. The longest any range near me goes is 600 yards and you have,to get 5 out of 5 on an 8 inch gong at 300 yards. I can't imagine 300 (or 500!) with iron sights. It takes a ton of concentration for me to do 300 with 3x magnification on a high end scope

Linking because the pictures are huge but I got to shoot a $5k competition rifle over the weekend.  A guy at the range was breaking in a new barrel and 200 yards was "boring" to him so he let me shoot as much as I wanted.  Good god.  His setup was for someone shooting on their right side so I was struggling to focus (I'm left eye dominant) and it was still the most accurate I've ever been with anything.  This guy was shooting dime sized groups with "shitty ammo" as he called it.

https://1drv.ms/i/s!ArDnwteZC_dL1AYNPblPuH1rUBX6

https://1drv.ms/i/s!ArDnwteZC_dL1ANG7NCDOop9ScEn

I was trying to move laterally to the right down the cross of the target doing two shots for each movement right. The flyer on the far right was when my eye was giving out and I couldn't see crap so I went back to shooting my own :'(

I also put a Python on layaway recently.  I've always wanted one and the prices have come down enough to be around what I think they should really be worth...

https://1drv.ms/f/s!ArDnwteZC_dL7yQuGXayXnSw-nWD

I should have it by the end of July but I think I've used all my new gun mileage for the year already.

The Wilson is a dream though.  Fits perfectly in my hand and I saw an immediate increase in rapid fire accuracy.  I'm just back on target very quickly.
