I'm torn on whether I should buy this or not. I'm still recovering from the disappointment that was IV.

You could make the argument that Grand Theft Auto V is an R18+ rated game, but we’re talking about parodying the consumption of illegal drugs here, in a branch of the largest specialist retailer in Australia.

Since I can't play the game at launch, I need my boritos to answer three desperate questions for me and the rest of the site:

1. How are on foot controls? Does it still feel like you control like a tank? Are characters more agile? Does it take 10 seconds to turn around and do seemingly small things like get out of your car? Are the animation fast?

2. How is the cover system? Is it still poop? Are you still hit with damage even though you're clearly behind cover?

3. How is the shooting without auto aim enabled?

So... does Himu hate the game yet?

I'm torn on whether I should buy this or not. I'm still recovering from the disappointment that was IV.

I know better this time. I always get sucked into GTA hype, play it for two hours, get sick of it and never touch the game again.

NOT THIS TIME.

So this isn’t a review. But at this point I know enough to tell you — enthusiastically and without reservation — this is a game that deserves its inevitable commercial success, the adoring reviews that have probably just now been posted, and however many hours you can spare it.

tom chick, 2008:

Quote
After 50 hours and 22 minutes, 15,036 bullets (9,172 of which actually hit what I was aiming at), 857 murders, 206 pedestrians run over, 211 cars stolen, an average speed of 31mph, 9 exterminated pigeons, and a single soda, I've finally finished the story mode in Grand Theft Auto IV. And I'm only 71.25% done.

Quote
First, the driving model is on par with some of my favorites: Carmageddon, Test Drive: Eve of Destruction, and the last Midnight Club, for instance. I adore the physics here, which are both serious and fun. As the game progresses and more vehicles unlock, getting from point A to point B is a choice, similar to which gun you're going to use in a shooter. Loud Freeway chopper, twitchy NRG 900, sloppy muscle car (preferably a SabreGT over yet another Dukes), high performance sports car, hearty SUV, or just a reliable sedan? Or maybe a relaxing cab ride? Or just skip it all for a minimal fee?

But the main reason I didn't mind all the driving is also the main reason I was so completely sucked into the game: Liberty City is an amazingly realized place. If any part of Grand Theft Auto IV lives up to the hyperbole, it's the city itself.

Quote
I still think it was a great game – yes, great – in spite of significant shortcomings. But now that I'm done, I wish Rockstar had made a better game for Liberty City and I wish they had written a better story for Niko Bellic. Because these are two of the most memorable characters you'll meet in any videogame.

Answer these questions as soon as you get the game running.

Since I can't play the game at launch, I need my boritos to answer three desperate questions for me and the rest of the site:

Just picked it up.

1. Foot controls are incredible. The characters are more agile and I can turn around on a dime. The animations are lightning fast.

2. Woah. This cover system is incredible. It feels so real.

3. The shooting without auto aim enabled reminds me of Call of Duty with keyboard and mouse yet I'm using a controller. GOTF confirmed.

Got mine on 360, first mission performance is bad. Frame rate is awful and tearing too. But there was a lot going on.

driving feels better, but foot controls are still like a tank. Shooting is better, more like gears of war/over the shoulder perspective.

Are on foot controls more akin to...RDR or GTAIV? Because I don't mind them in RDR.

first level has snow so I think that contributed to the bad performance and bad controls for on foot. Much better in the 2nd mission for both. But the controls are still very heavy when you move the character

3. How is the shooting without auto aim enabled?

1. Still a tank. I felt like a jackass trying to get my character to drink a beer beside the fridge because he turns so slow. After playing Saints Row 4, I wish you could just jump through cat windows to steal a vehicle but nope, you've gotta walk around to throw the person out. It's still clunky but eh, not as bad as 4.

2. The cover system is better. It feels like Max Payne 3's and I liked that. I don't have any complaints with it.

3. Honestly I haven't turned on complex aiming. I left it on simple. If you don't flick the analog stick to the left or right you won't auto target someone though, so it still is basically free aim if you move the stick yourself. The aiming reticle is a little annoying though. It's a white dot that's like 2 pixels large so it can be a bit hard to see what you're aiming at but I'm getting used to it.
