True. However it is impossible to please SOME women. Like when the new tomb raider is seen as female death porn when it has been done to men for decades. But when you write reviews as a reviewer you are supposed to put away those shackles of gender and judge the game for what it is. I am sure if there was a woman main character in this game this particular reviewer would cry death porn aswell.
right, but unless that's actually the same woman who said both of those things (hint: it's not), you're just making the kind of generalizations that feed into the problem.
i mean, i think it *is* pretty sad that, parody, satire, or whatever, that there hasn't been much in the way of decent female characters in the series. they've included interesting male characters while still managing to parody and satire what they want, i'm not sure how adding a proper female character now and then is going upset things.
and no, when you write reviews as a reviewer, you are supposed to give your opinion of the game, nothing more or less. if a game can have its score increased due to story/character reasons (and they do), then you have to allow the opposite as well. i'd rather hear the reviewer's honest feelings, even if it differs from what everyone else is saying. actually, *especially* if it differs from what everyone else is saying.
she did break a certain rule here in that she criticized the game and gave it a lower score than Rockstar usually wants. i'm sure that's going to have tremendous blowback on her beyond the already shameful usual display gamers have put on, so don't worry, she'll shut up the next time and just give the publisher-requested score.
They've actually done a good job with female characters now and then in Catalina (

) and Elizabeta. In the case of Catalina, she's gtaIII's main antagonist even. GTA Chinatown had a cool female partner, and GTA TLAD features a struggling druggie chick and her awful, awful life in a very sympathetic light.
Honestly, I've never had an issue with how gta treats women. In this case, the game clearly full on satire in this matter and is a reflection of the world design. The emphasis on violence, the obsession with sex, are all reflections of America. If anything, the way women are treated in GTA are also reflections. If you're talking about a game where almost every npc has a smartphone out, there's a gun company that is treated almost like Wal Mart, do people really think they're going to write women in a good light when - in the real world - they still make less money than men on average and women are seen as vapid?
Characters like aforementioned Elizabeta and Catalina even slightly comment on this with their gungho attitudes.
It is like they [reviewer at gs] are purposely missing the point of what they're [rock star] saying. Which admittedly is often flawed, juvenile, and crass still manages to say a good point every now and then. Rock star are excellent at writing good female characters when they're actually on screen. So the misogyny line falls on deaf ears. The developers aren't misogynstic, we know this from their actual female characters - they are merely saying we live in a misogynistic world.
I agree with your core argument, but in the context of GTA I find you're arguing up the wrong tree.
