It does seem like Columbine was never really "forgotten," at least in the traditional sense. I remember the Columbine RPG getting a massive amount of controversy and that was over six years after the shooting.

This is the third deadliest shooting in American history. This is worse than Columbine in body count, and in terms of the youngness of the victims. This is going to be a huge deal (as it should be) and it'll stay in the public mind for years to come, mark my words.

Guns

When I am your benevolent dictator I will actually take all of your guns away, but until that day comes I really don't know what can be done given our current understanding of the constitution. There are a lot of guns out there, they're easy to obtain, and I'm not really sure what could change that.

We do need more and better access to mental health services in this country.

It's just amazing to me the things that people will absolutely freak out over, but then something like this happens and those same people are suddenly like "Woah, let's settle down a bit here and not do anything rash [like banning guns]."

I really see another push for ineffective and pointless legislation like the assault rifle ban coming through.  Not any full on bans and I don't believe Obama is coming for my gunz.  But I do think that with all these shootings the media and general public are going to want some legislative solution.  And instead of focusing on mental health issues in the country they're going to go for the lowest hanging fruit.

It might also be because people tend to react by trying to legislate a solution to the symptoms of a much bigger problem.  And they enact pointless and ineffective legislation at that (94 assault rifle ban).

I agree in extra hoops to getting guns.  I really think required classes and a tighter background check would be nice.  But banning assault rifles is pointless.  There are hunting rifles that could do more damage.  Trying to classify guns this way is a really superficial way to satisfy people who aren't knowledgable about firearms.  It does nothing.

This guy killed 26 people with a non-assault weapon. Banning them would not have prevented this. Seems more like a problem of mental health, and also how easy it is to obtain guns. Should gun licenses be like pilot licenses that have to be renewed every few years w/tests? Should we ban clips that hold so much ammunition? Dunno

Regardless: it's not going to come from the federal level because the minute Obama takes some weak middle-of-the-road position, the Fox and NRA machine will go into overdrive inciting people, the House will refuse to even debate the issue, etc. Change needs to come from the state level when people tell their representatives that enough is enough.
