This has nothing to do with the hardware (the hardware is fine), and everything to do with network infrastructure. PSN is down off and on for everyone, including PS3 owners. How long has that system been out, again? None of these systems (not even Steam on the PC side) are built to handle the loads thrown on it. They want your money, but none of them want to invest it into their framework.  Always on, always broken. Once they have your dollars, they don't give a fuck.

Basically, when I say "fuck next-gen" I really mean "fuck digital." Too much hassle.

Isn't the hardware, though? You paid 400-600 dollars to be locked into a walled garden.

At least on the PC side, if one quasi-walled garden is fucked up, you can go play on another.

Sure it is. Playing a game is always better than stewing in your living room waiting for your console to be fixed.

InFamous is awesome, bunch a shit taste fuckers in this joint.

LTTP is almost as overrated as FF6, almost.

 :goty

I'm sorry that I'm not a nostalgia feg. I'd rather play InFamous again than a B-tier Zelda and repugnant for weeaboos who cry at pixelated opera scenes crap.

Hates the "nostalgia" argument. Uses the "nostalgia" argument.

:beli

This post is so bad, Wrath.

I just can't fathom someone crying at the Opera Scene. I just thought about it and started to instantly laugh. :yeshrug

I know you guys are gonna make fun of me and I don't care, but honestly this thread kind of made me take a break from this board.  I'm still here but using it less and sticking to not PS4 threads.

This whole thread is a bunch of non-PS4 owners taking every bit of bad news they can find and trolling as hard as possible on the PS4 trying to convince themselves and the people who bought the system that somehow the system sucks right now (even though, like the PS3, 4 years down the line they'll all own it).

I'm enjoying the hell out of my PS4 still.  I dunno if it's my favorite launch system.  Dreamcast/X360/PSP were all ridiculously fun and PS4 is too.  I don't care what reviews say, Knack is continually impressing the hell out of me visually.  It's the only game that makes me feel like GRAPHICAL LEAP and it's fun.  To me it's the perfect launch game.  Solid gameplay, light on content, and visual showpiece for the graphical leap in generations.  Exactly what a launch title should be (and a sequel comes out 2 years down the line and fleshes out the content and evolves the gameplay and visuals [or fucks it all up like Resistance 2]).  All these FPS games and stuff just look same old same old, no different than Crysis 3 and all these nice looking FPS games we've been seeing for years.  But how many Crysis level triple AAA 50 million budget platformers have their been on the PC in the last 5 years?  Oh yeah...none.  If you think about it, all the high-tech impressive PC games in the last 5 years have been FPS and either Crysis jungle looking or dark corridor shooting.  So this is the first time we're really seeing what a "NEXT-GEN" kind of game looks like when applied to a kid-friendly colorful platformer style and the result is just jaw-droppingly incredible at times, especially later on in the game.  The animations, the lighting, the whatever the fuck they do to the rock textures to make them look real...it all comes together as this close to finally hitting a playable Dreamworks/Pixar CG movie.  Get it to 60fps and maybe we'd be there.  Anyhow, game isn't perfect, it's not even near perfect (and has some design issues for sure) and I"m almost done with it and would give it a 7.5 as a game; but yeah it's everything I want out of a launch title and makes me excited about the next 5 years of games on this tech level.  I liked Kameo a lot too for the same reasons on X360.  That plus PGR3 were perfect launch titles.

KZ is shit, but it's kind of fun to laugh at while playing the campaign.  Reallly enjoying ACIV.  100% perfecting the game so far and haven't done that since they introduced the sub-objectives in AC:B but the stealth (even as broken as it is) is so satisfying and fun here.  Plus game looks good and never drops a frame from 30fps which is nice.

One thing that's interesting is the two launch 1st party titles are both pretty lengthy and difficulty.  Not much to say about that other than it's interesting to see Sony's approach to launch games.  Instead of being like "make short 3-5 hour flashy games" they obviously pushed to have lengthy titles that will last a while (though that hurts them too if the content doesn't deserve that kind of length like Knack) also in the age of easy games it's interesting seeing Sony 1st party games still pushing challenging games to the mainstream gamer.

But yeah, I still haven't finished a PS4 game and that's not because I don't play the system.  I'm like 75% through Knack and 75% through KZ and 20% into ACIV and having a great time.  Any complaints about the system from me are minor.  The games look and run great, are fun, the UI is fantastic, the controller is top-notch.  And it's region free and RGG/Yakuza is out in 3 months!  60fps/1080p RGG should be sweet.

So yeah, I'm having a great time (played Wii U a little and 3d World/Pikmin/W101 were all nice, but none of them made me want drop what I was playing on PS4 and jump into them first) and almost everyone with a PS4 is having a great time and really enjoying the system but all the people who don't have the system are looking on from the outside and complaining about and trolling it and I dunno, I'm having a good time so I don't really see the point in posting in a thread where I'm like "hey, this is fun" and everyone's like "no, it's sucks.  You can't really be having fun" because it's just kind of pointless.  But I guess that's the internet and forums.  If you're having a good time, half the people are going to try to convince you that you aren't and everything you like sucks.

I'm sure the Xbone is a solid system too, but I'm not going into the Xbone thread and shitting on every interface glitch or DLC monetization or game quality or whatever because if people are having fun (which it seems they are) then more power to them.  If I had infinite money I'd probably get an Xbone too just to play Dead Rising 3 because even if it's only 720p and has framerate problems, it looks fun and neat and that's what matters.

I don't think anyone said that Bebpo. My post on Knack was just one post. I never tried to convince anyone that it is a bad game. Most people here are enjoying their systems. I don't think anyone actually said to not enjoy their system or is trying to convince anyone otherwise. I think you are injecting your own emotions because people who don't have the system just see another launch system, and most of us don't like nor buy launch systems. My critique on Eel's post was that he bought a launch system. Today it is out in the EU. Im not sure why he expected it to connect to psn today given the new influx of players. That doesn't mean I'm criticizing your purchase, I am criticizing Eel's response to psn being down.

Wasn't really talking about you Himuro.  More of the tone of the board, which is always pretty harsh on stuff (Nintendo fans like Andrex get this all the time), is just bringing out a really negative tone in this thread on the PS4, which just feels pretty counter to my actual experience with the system and since I'm not going to change any minds it just seems kind of pointless to post in this thread.

The same thing occurs in the xbox thread and has occurred over the last few months. It was why I stopped posting in those threads for months. It is tiresome to have to deal with people shitting up a thread when you'd actually like to have some useful information in a thread but it is what it is. Next gen launches bring out the worst in people. Even people who are normally not that bad.  The only suggestion I would make is to stay in or create game specific threads as those tend to involve less console warriors or people overly concerned with trolling.

Well to be fair, the Xbox one thread isn't much better but the people are enjoying their games more there. I think we could avoid if ps4 had more appealing games to people.

It's how this board roll, Bebpo.  You just gotta roll with it.

In the past, I've posted pics when I did massive upgrades to my PC rig and some people would be talking shit just for lulz.  They'd be like, what a waste of money,  I could still play the same games on my consoles, blah, blah, blah...

As long as you enjoy what you've spent money on, who cares what some haters are saying?  Only get upset if a product isn't performing up to expectations like Eel (although he does seem to have really bad luck with electronics).

That's cool and that's what the internet should be used for. A way to vent on random shit that irritates you.

But ... I do think it's a little unrealistic to expect a company to build an infrastructure that can handle every calamity they can think of. At some point, you have to accept that things are going to break and hopefully, they learn from the mistakes and make it better. That's all you can really ask for when receiving a service from a corporation.

The problem with all this console warrior bullshit and PC warrior bullshit is that only a small segment of crazy people care. And they obsess over their brand of choice or platform of choice "winning" when 99% of people don't give a shit about that blather. But instead we still get to have threads shitted up by this stuff.

The reason people buy consoles is simplicity and community. They want to play with their friends and they want it to not be a hassle. The console choice is just either what their friends have or what has the exclusive games they want, or what is at the correct price point for them, etc. It's not because of some battle of Titans they have sworn allegiance to in the name of Nintendo/Sony/or Microsoft.

And the reason people buy gaming PC's is because the extra power afforded them and customization and flexibility afforded them is worth the price of admission for them.

It's that simple. And no normal human being gives a shit what console or PC you decide to spend your own personal money on, or spends countless hours debating you about it on forums.

This thread and the xbox thread is mostly trolling, joking around, and poking fun at console warriors. I don't see any "serious business" console warriors here like you'd find at gaf. Once the launch hype passes it'll calm down.

I've been having fun with my PS4 but I still thought those brick pictures were funny. :P I agree PS4 is off to a stronger start than PS3/360, that's why I got one at launch and not 2-3 years in.

Knack is a pretty game, no doubt about that. Btw did you try out time attack or coliseum? I'm pretty much finished with the game. I'd give it a 6/10 overall still. I agree Knack and Resogun are decent challenges if you want them to be. Trying to unlock Hero mode and rank on the leaderboards in Resogun is tough. I've never been that good at shmups though.

I went to the MS and Sony stores at the mall to play around with these. The Xbone seemed pretty jittery when popping out and then going in to different apps and games.

Then I tried the PS4 and it actually had a loading screen to exit from the game (Killzone) back to the dashboard so that I could try another demo. I thought it was the more powerful console tho?

Finished Killzone campaign.  Holy shit that was terrible.  Now I've lost any motivation to pick up BF4 and play another shitty frustrating FPS campaign.  At least the graphics got pretty nice in the last 2 chapters.  There are parts that are definitely on Crysis level which is impressive for sure.  The gunplay is alright, but everything non-gun, aka STEALTH or FREEFALL is frustratingly broken and terrible and makes you want to throw controllers.

Otoh, the multiplayer seems pretty fun.

A quick update on the state of PlayStation 4 sales, since everyone’s watching this closely, and the numbers keep rising at record rates: After I broke down a questionable demographic report on Black Friday console sales in the U.S. yesterday morning, Sony released updated sales figures for the PS4 worldwide. The new figure: 2.1 million units sold.

I'm enjoying the PS4. I'm trying to go digital only this gen and it's nice not having to worry about discs so far. I picked up:

Assassin's Creed 4
Battlefield 4
Call of Duty Ghosts
Need for Speed Rivals

I kinda want to get Killzone now just to have basically all the launch title games. I don't really have any interest in Knack but I'll probably rent it to play with the girlfriend.

At this point last generation (aka the generation where most companies lost tons of money on the console business and a record number of console developers went under) the total number of consoles sold was over 12 million.  So far, this gen is just over 7 million.  We won't even bring up software sales.

Basically, I'm cool with my prediction.  Console sales will be down significantly gen-over-gen and software sales will be flat at the upper end and lower at every other level, all at a higher budget to boot.

  :miyamoto

If we don't count Nintendo (aka, not counting Wii sales and not counting Wii U sales), I'd disagree.  I feel there's going to be an uptick in hardware sales this gen worldwide and PS4 will finish much higher than PS3 did, though Xbone will drop from X360 numbers.  Software will probably stay about the same imo.  PS4 really feels like what people who actually play games want out of a system.  Affordable, nice graphics, nice controller, good interface, nice and sleek and compact system design, good & straightforward online.  Only thing it's missing is BC and then it'd sell even more.

I think that would be a pointless argument.  It is like disqualifying the ps1 and ps2 generations because most of the casuals bought that system(ps1 and ps2) and doesnt show the complete picture.  Most of the casuals went with the wii last gen, it would be unfair if we disqualify it just for being weaker hardware.

Now if we wanted to to show that hardcore gamers are on the rise it would be better to show that on CONSOLES how many hours a year overall people play which should dwarf the casual hours a bit.

I don't think most casuals owned a videogame system before the Wii.  The Wii brought in a huge amount of non-gamers and now they've left the scene and moved to mobile.  So the market will restore itself to being a market for people who actually play videogames and did in all the other generations.  And publishers will just have to live with the fact that they won't get that casual money unless they put their low-effort, low-budget casual money-making titles on mobile, which most will do.  And then everything will be fine again.  Probably.

Bebpo

I agree that last generation was a giant failure.  Overpriced hardware, RROD/YLOD, lack of Japanese games and B-tier software, rise of PC gaming again.  I think a lot of people who played NES->PS2 left the console scene.

I think PS4 will bring some of them back, but we'll see.  I think there are a lot of people who just want a stable, affordable gaming console that just plays games on their big tv and nothing else.

Actually I'm just projecting.  Last gen was a total disappointment to me, as someone who enjoys videogames, and so far PS4 is a pleasant surprise and very exciting.

Now, in actual response to your points.  I think the system price is very sexy to most people compared to $599 last time around.  X360 did pretty well at $399 and PS4 should grab that fire.  The closeness to PC architecture means lower costs, more efficient games and more PC -> PS4 porting; meaning bigger library.  Variable pricing of indie, F2P, PSN, DLC, Micro/Macro transactions, etc... means more open to price games for everyone.  System power being strong enough that it's not a no-brainer "just get multiplatform on PC because they look and run like crap on consoles" like it was last gen.  Variable pricing and lower dev costs will also in best case scenario will help B-tier games return a bit as you're seeing more and more B-tier type titles coming out on PC (mostly from Europe) and they'll port no-brainer to PS4.  And this one is hugely speculative, but I'm gonna be optimistic and go out on a limb that PS4 might mark the return of Japanese console games due to Japan finally getting the hang of shaders and advanced architecture and the PS4 being very easy to work with and thus lowering costs, especially with lots of middleware.  Japan's console history has been stuck dealing with tough systems since PS2 and PS3 were both a pain in the ass but X360 just wasn't a viable market alternative in Japan.  This is the first time Japanese devs will actually get to make their game on a system that's easy to develop for and has plenty of power and variable pricing structures.  Also the hardware seems more stable this time around, if only slightly better.  But less crazy cutting edge tech should make them more stable.  Plus it's more like a Slim size so not some huge behemoth that will frighten Japan like the PS3 at launch.

Also one thing that I think is freaking HUGE is that both MS and Sony getting massive amounts of units out at launch is incredibly healthy for the industry.  Why?  Because when launches are like 300k HW and then a slow drip, people are scared to start working on games right away because they don't know if the systems will have an install base.  They put projects on hold, or outright cancel them or just wait to actually start development until they see the turn around.  This imo happened in Japan on the PS3/3DS/PSP and maybe will be happening about now on the Vita and in every situation it was terrible for the systems because it created a catch 22 where no one wanted to buy the systems because it had no games, but no one wanted to make the games because the install base is low.  Getting the WW install bases up in the millions ASAP is, again imo, going to make a huge difference this generation because developers everywhere are going "oh shit, the systems have a healthy install base already.  Let's get software out since there's millions of users who want to play something and tons of money to be had by selling to them[/i]"  Then the software comes out in droves and even MORE people buy the systems and the snowball healthy ecosystem comes into its own.  Even if Japan doesn't take off right away, if the WW numbers are big enough everywhere else, all the Japanese big boys are gonna greenlight PS4/Xbone games to get some of the WW userbase pie which then will help drive the Japan install base up and help the cycle start there.  So yeah, I think getting 5-10 million systems in people's hands in the first 6 months is going to do wonders for the PS4.

tldr; I think the software is going to be great and varied (in content and pricing) and come in at a much faster and steadier pace once it starts flowing towards the end of next year, the price is attractive and the system is impressively powerful enough and easy to use.

I like Bebpo's optimism. I really hope it is the case. But at this point rather than expecting or wanting the doom to happen or actively being optimistic - to spare me from disappointment - I'm just gonna go and just ride the tide, baby. I'll take some games no matter where they take me and there will always be games, so no worries. I do HOPE for Bebpo's scenario, though.
