GTA: San Andreas had the same controversy with letting your character get tattoos that were meant to look like real-life gang tattoos, that was in 2004. Apparently gang message boards were all excited about it and I think Time magazine had an article talking about how this Scottish game studio was recruiting gang tattoo artists from LA to give their input and wondered if this was crossing into real life too much.
Even if the story does glorify gang life a little, at least this is giving an honest job to people who just got out of prison. I know at least a couple actors on The Wire like Spook and that reverend dude were actually involved in drug crime before they got on that show but I don't think having gangsters play gangsters is really necessary as characters like Bubbles and Omar were played by regular method-actors.
I don't really care that much for any of this shit, I just felt like pointing it out.
