European elitism on GAF used to be quite the annoying meme. Thank god that shit is over, and virtually the entire continent is swaying from one embarrassment to another. I'm not happy about it, but it feels good to point and laugh every now and then.

Definitely going to be hard to improve life for them when the general population seemingly don't give a shit about them. But Devo, did you SEE how they live?! DID YOU?! Their population of 3000 is going to engulf Sweden and it is better to ignore them than help them, okay? I thought this was common sense.

The GAF thread is now contracting. Either they have no culture whatsoever, or they have a culture but it is destructive and therefore must be dealt with.

I think you're really stretching yourself thin and trying to find something to be offended over with that post. That post was respectful, and he was right in that people reserve the right to be critical, and that criticism doesn't necessarily necessitate racism.

It feels like you're trying to prove them wrong, without any personal experience on the matter, and calling them all racist or laughing at their even respectful replies.

It's quite immature.

I think the point was that you probably can't simplify gypsy culture in Europe along the lines of our American understanding of racism. especially when you're completely outside of the situation.

Being completely outside of a situation and putting pressure on others is what international communities do constantly. Generalizing and vilifying a whole group of people tends to be universal. While not necessarily knowing the best solutions, you can still find fault with the rhetoric that is nothing more than tired apologetics for shit behavior and general disgusting attitudes.

People coming out and saying "you don't know the situation here" after they talk like they do is just trying to rationalize their bullshit.

I agree, Etiolate. Reading the thread, it's totally different from what we face. Pretty much all of our minorities are integrated, even if many drop out, and a lot of the stuff they describe in that thread are completely foreign to me. Even living in the ghetto isn't like that.

So you got a bunch of gun-ho Americans trying to pull a lil' hurr and durr in that thread to prove that - yes, Europeans ARE racist! so we don't have to feel so bad about our country! - and painting any critique towards Roma culture as racism.

It's extremely petty and narrow-minded.

No, with the ones specifically trying to paint all Roma as this or that, then when called out on it fall back on "you don't know what it's like here."

There's a solid difference between acting like you have a solution to a Roma, immmigrant, minority problem and generally disliking rhetoric that shits on an entire group of people. When the latter happens with Roma, and it's called out, suddenly Roma culture this, you don't know what it's like that. Uhuh.

These two statements don't contradict each other, and I agree.

It really is like Canada though, where the reserves are kind of fucked up and the people living/growing up in them are stuck in a fucked cycle, and every non-native assumes every native is part of that fucked situation whether they actually are/were or not.

I dunno what the system is like in Canada or the history, was it like here where they basically put them on shit land, tried to force education and religion down their throats and now there is just a lot of lost culture and boozin'?

Roma presence brings up a lot of questions. If only there was some sort of definitive solution. Maybe they could be removed from polite society and reprogrammed out of their degenerate culture that threatens European values and people. Just concentrate them in certain areas. Some form of camp, perhaps.

While staying in the Netherlands, I had a conversation with good friends about immigrants. It was awkward and uncomfortable and pretty similar to what you hear people in the states complain about (learn the language, taking our jobs, etc.). Kinda blew it off, but then ended up having a similar conversations with other friends in Belgium and the Netherlands.

The reservations here are pretty much the same way. I used to work at an elementary school on one and saw some really terrible situations. Poor kids are stuck in a vicious cycle and very few get out of it. Yeah, they've got a casino that makes a killing, but you're not seeing that translate into better lives for most of the people.

The Mashantuckets had a bad rep at my school, but they had a kickass museum though (Mashantucket Pequot Museum), went on several fieldtrips there as a kid.

It's messed up.  I don't know what the Romas are like, but being half-white half-native in a town parked right next to a reserve kind of forced me to learn all too well about the reserve situation.  It's an incredibly destructive atmosphere for a child to grow up in, with anger and bitterness around every corner, being taught from childhood to mistrust the outside world, and a lot of selfish in-fighting for the resources of the reserve.  People opt not to work because they get enough "free" money to sustain themselves, but it's not really enough money, so they let their houses and schools and shit run down while they buy Playstations and big screen TVs.  Kids grow up in that situation, have their parents telling them not to trust the white man's world, and they end up getting stuck in it themselves.  Anyone who leaves the reserve and makes it who tries to come back and help things gets branded as a race traitor.

I'll never forget the time when I was volunteering for a native group at my University.  We had some elementary school kids coming in from a reserve, real bright ones.  The trip to the university was a prize for doing well in school.  They were pretty excited.  We basically showed them around the campus and did activities in different areas of learning, fun shit like "excavating" treasure from boxes of dirt, or making a little pillar and then using the press in the engineering department to test its strength, shit like that.  The idea was to get them excited about higher education and maybe even a career.  The kids had a blast, with this one boy in particular taking a major shining to the engineering stuff.

After the tours, we went back to the centre lounge where the parents were waiting and had a pow-wow.  The little boy who was so excited went over and happily told his dad about what he'd seen and how he wanted to be an engineer.  His dad kind of got this angry look on his face and scolded the boy, saying "Don't ever trust the white man's world, and don't you ever listen to what any of them say".  The poor kid just looked like he'd been told Santa wasn't real.

I wonder what happened to him.  I hope he made it out.  I bet he didn't.

This is partly why I can't fully support the Roma. I have no idea what their situation is like and looking from the thread, many of the criticisms are legitimate. Europeans who are racist towards Roma is bad, sure, but surely there are some Roma who are fine with their situation in exactly what you described.

If one thing taught me about being a minority it is that minorities tend to often have a crab in a barrel mentality, no matter what country or oriigin, especially on the topic of poverty. This doesn't make the any discrimination against them right, but it doesn't many any critique against them wrong.

Rather than concentrate on pointing fingers and calling Europeans racist, perhaps we should throw out solutions to these problems, or is that just hippie level shit?

I've worked pretty closely with our district's Native Education coordinator at work. She and her husband are full-blood Natives with Master's degrees who push the value of education on their kids. It's really tough for them, since they've made a point of continuing to live on the reservation, but at the same time not wanting their kids to fall into the rut that most do. I know they get "looked down on" by other members of the tribe.

Also, I've got some native blood (1/4) and am a registered member of my tribe (Ottawa). I don't make a big deal out of it, but the previous director of Native Education sure did and liked to talk it up to families. It always made me feel bad, because to everyone, I'm just some white guy.

:(

CT has reservations too, but I don't know how the casinos impact things...

Everyone who lives on the reservation gets a profit check a few times a year. People on the council tried to tie school attendance into check dispersal, but all it did was make the kids show up for a few weeks and then stop coming again. And a lot of families blew through that many incredibly fast. I lost count of how many times kids would come to school and tell me that they had their power/water turned off because someone didn't pay the bill. Or how they couldn't sleep the night before because their mom was partying all night and kept them up.  :(

When I was homeschooled we went to Florida for some Christian trip with our fellow homeschool families, and visited a reservation. We got to talk to the kids, do some religious shit with them, and witness. I remember them being really friendly to my family, but the older Native Americans were visibly upset about the white people who were there.

It always made me feel bad, because to everyone, I'm just some white guy.

Regardless, there sure is a lot of European mental gymnastics and cognitive dissonance in that thread. "You just don't understand" doesn't justify discrimination.

Fuck that, the sooner we send the police and social workers in to smash those camps and get the kids into some kind of education, the better.

I disagree with a number of posts in this thread.  People simply got over Ja Rule around the time of 50 Cent's ascendancy.  50 Cent and Eminem definitely hastened his decline but nobody gave a shit about The Last Temptation.  His formula was getting stale and Ja Rule really really REALLY wanted to pretend to be Tupac, which his base (teen white girls) weren't interested in.  Hard to come off like a hardcore thug when all you were known for was writing cookie cutter hip pop crap; he simply miscalculated who really liked his shit.  Also he put out an album that got a lot of attention (R.U.L.E.) that nobody gave two shits about, even as the G-Unit high was starting to wear off.  Then he released another single that did so shitty that they didn't even bother to follow it up with an album.

My problem with 50 during that time was that he claimed he would end the bubblegum pop rap shit, only to expand it further. Ja Rule was cheesy as fuck but so was Magic Stick and all the other crap 50 Cent put out after GRODT. Even that album had 21 Questions lol.

Which is funny because 50 Cent declined faster and earlier than Ja Rule at their respective peaks.  He got very lucky with Vitamin Water.

These dudes and their damn grand "romantic" (read: actually creepy) gestures. Maybe if they spent more time being less awkward.

grand romantic gestures really only work with particular types of people and only if they involve a grand show of wealth
it's very 'romcom movie', which makes me wonder how many dudes pull their behavioral cues from what happens on tv/film. I'm guessing quite a few going by the dating age thread.

God tell me about it. Some dudes wouldn't be doing that grand gesture shit if some women didn't have freakouts about how he didn't serenade you on your birthday, buy 15 different gifts and take you out to your favorite restaurant.

I want to feel special

Also she won't ever say that's what she wants except to her friends, so he's not only supposed to manage to do this but read her mind about it too.

unfortunately a lot of people of both genders pull their expectations and behaviour from romcoms and disney movies, then wonder why the fuck things went wrong.
that's true, it's probably a lot of both genders.

This is why people shouldn't raise their daughter to be a "princess."
