I just like good conversation and discussion, I'm not really mad. But then your response is definitely :umad territory. And I never realized two-three paragraphs counts as essays now. What are they teaching today's youth? :heh

Ocarina of Time is one of my favorite games of all time. See that? I'm capable of of being critical of my faves. :smug

It isn't hyperbole though. Wasted items IS a huge flaw. It doesn't matter WHEN an item appears, late game or not. It should have use, outside of its dungeon - in other dungeons, or in the world. That is how Zelda works. I realize that you are new to this Zelda thing (:heh) but that has always been Zelda tradition. Link to the Past is great because no item is pointless and still has use outside or inside dungeons. Ocarina has a lot of filler items, and it's one of the first Zelda titles to really have that get item in dungeon -> don't use EVER AGAIN Zeldaism that started to bear fruit in Wind Waker and Twilight Princess. It's okay if it doesn't mean much to you and it's not a big flaw to you, but I like action adventure games that connect, every single bit.

OoT bloat and filler?

When, where.

That's like one of my favorite games precisely because you go from a to b without too much shit in between. And I liked trying to find heart pieces, random holes in the ground, and those asshole skulltulas. Not to mention some Gerudo Training. That shit was something to do if you wanted to play the game and not necessarily jump right into a new temple.

Wasted items, your only example so far is a lens that still has uses outside and inside the dungeons after you find it so what.

I brought up iron boots as well. Additional items are the megaton hammer, goron and zora tunics, hover boots, and biggoran sword. You use the most of these items only in specific dungeons or areas. The biggoran sword is a giant waste of space, period. The zora tunic is more useful than the goron tunic, but you don't really use it much. Hover boots are mostly only ever used in its specific dungeon. The same is true for the Megaton Hammer, and the iron boots. They are filler items are used for their novelty and do not add to the games overall design, because they are meant for specific moments in the game, and the games design is not based around these items. They're just cute additions you use a few times.

Compare to LoZ1, LTTP, and Majora's Mask, and these games have much more to work with. The story items you get are items you will be using the whole game, in every location. The same is not true for OoT.

I only listed two items (lens of truth and iron boots) because I didn't feel like nerding out and actually looking at an OoT item list to make my point.

I don't think you remember the game very well if you think those items were of limited use.

Can you believe in Adventure, they actually let you find and pick up a dot? What was the point in that? Stupid game designers wasting our time.

I don't think you remember the game very well if you think those items were of limited use.

Last time I played OoT was 2008 and these recollections were true then as they are now. Most of those items are pointless outside of their dungeons. Iron boots is a shit item to begin with. Start, equip iron boots. Start, unequip iron boots. Shit, shit, shit. Hover boots, same shit. Thankfully, hover boots have much, much more use than the iron boots, so it's an exception. Blue tunic, you mostly only ever use in the water temple. I always equip it anyways because I like the color blue.  :-[ Red tunic is really only required at the fire temple. The hammer is a pointless item for the most part. Lens of truth, already covered.

I even made the GAF thread for the 10th anniversary to replay the game, so these musings are slightly fresh. I played OoT and MM back to back. I had never really played MM much except for a short stint when I was a teenager and dropped it because I didn't really care for the time management. When I played them in 2008, at that point, I had played OoT enough to sequence break. I ended up finding Majora's Mask being the better game by a long mile. No nostalgia.

That being said, I love both n64 Zelda's and think they form a great duo in that they both compliment each other. You can get out of one, which you don't get out of the other. I vastly preferred Majora's Mask, though. It just appeals to me more as an adult.

If it makes it feel better, Pilonv gives me shit because I didn't play Shenmue when it came out. :yeshrug I'm not really one to care. It's like making fun of someone because their favorite movie is 2001 and it came out before they born. It takes a   level of reaching to call someone a poser because of that. If asking a pal in the UK to order an imported copy of Shenmue II PAL Dreamcast from Amazon UK, paying 70 dollars for it,  buying a Action Replay just to play an import of a 5 year old game is posing. I guess I'm a poser. :yeshrug

Buying an Action Replay? You could just burn a bootdisc that would bypass the security. That's what I did.

mm meanwhile is oot table scraps with some animal crossing prototype bullshit added in :patel

Why?  This isn't the beginning of the plan to save console gaming.  This was the emergency chute.  And it's already shown to be faulty.  Call it and tag it.

The new consoles just launched 3 months ago. Wait until after May/launch window games start to come in before saying the year is outright bad. I'm not denying that consoles are shrinking, but it's too soon for PS4/X-box's launch window to say how bad it is.

Cara Ellison had a similar feature for One Life Left, where she would open an OK Cupid profile based on Lara Croft and other video game characters and then read some choice messages she got. Wasn't all that entertaining and it seems to have already died aftrer maybe three segments? Yeah.

First, check out the latest trailer in HD. Bear in mind, YouTube is capped at 30 fps; the final game is set to be 60 fps.

What boggles my mind is how incredible Mario Kart 8 looks in motion. Stills don't do it justice at all, so don't bother posting screens. You have to see it in motion.

The colors, the colors, the COLORS! And they all pop with the lighting, shadows, texture detail, shaders, effects, etc. If you traveled back in time to 2011, before we knew the specs of the WiiU, and if you showed me MK8 and told me it was from Nintendo's new console, I would've thought WiiU was equivalent to the PS4. The combination of tech and art direction, with a spectrum of colors most AAA titles seem to forget exist, is simply breathtaking in motion.

And the key phrase is "in motion." Aliasing issues crop up in stills, but when you see it in motion, with Wario's mustache fluttering in the wind, and self-shadowing for each limb and digit on their hands, and the abundance of colors... It's just amazing.

Anyone else surprised by how beautiful this game is looking? I've seen the Witcher 3 GIFs and the other exhibits for graphical fidelity, but few games have impressed me as much as MK8. And honestly, I never would've thought I'd be saying that about a Mario Kart title. These games have always run well, but they've never been known to push the graphical envelope for their system, until now.
Quote
My original claim in the title was MK8 is possibly the best-looking game ever. Which I qualified further in the OP, acknowledging it's ultimately an apples-and-oranges situation given the gamut of different graphical stylings out there.

Watching this trailer in the Direct yesterday, I just couldn't process everything I was seeing. It's just so full. Like I said before, I almost wonder if this will work against the gameplay, since the level of detail and effects might be distracting and confuse players while they're racing.

Stimulus overload, if you would. Similar effect I felt to arriving in Columbia in BioShock Infinite on PC.

Neiteio is someone who loves to pad his OP's with lots of introspective feels and hyperbole ad infinitum. It was tolerable and cute initially but then people started commending him for his style with their "I can't wait for Neiteio's thread/impression!" and now he tries to outdo himself with every thread.

Sometimes his style feels like a bizarro Amir0x.
