If Lore is considered 'handsome', then every male on GAF should have no trouble getting laid. Dude looks like an autistic elf.

I think doing something different with the hair and some facial hair maybe. That's about all I can offer.

If he sees Jeff Gerstmann again he should ask him about the whole style your hair in a way that you can see through to the entire outline of your scalp method. Not for him to use as his own hairstyle, I'd just like to know how Jeff achieves that beautiful magic so perfectly.

He's not a beautiful man, but he's not bad. Most of the people attacking his appearance are probably grosser than him, as people who do that usually are. If you wanna talk shit you should at least focus on his character and/or deep seated insecurities.

For comparison, IGN as a whole was bought for $800 million back in 2005 or whatever it was.

His desire to avoid ugly monetization is commendable but I can't imagine it's helping his bottom line.  He'd probably earn more cashing out than he will in the long term.  The thing is, there's more to it than just money, I think.  If he cashes out, he's just another rich dude with nothing else going on.  If he keeps the joint, he gets more than enough to live comfortably on *and* still be a somebody in an industry.  I think that means more to him than seven zeroes.  Probably not eight, though, haha.

I've got nothing against EviLore and the site but no one knows who Tyler Malka is. NeoGaf as a community is a known entity but outside of marketing departments, community managers and a few high profile individuals, most of the development community at large doesn't pay attention to it. The GameFAQs and IGN communities are far more relevant, not even trolling, and if we're talking global then NeoGaf is completely unknown outside of US & Canada. In a related note; thanks to the PAX conferences many confused individuals in marketing assume that specific community has a huge pull as well which is kind of hilarious.

Also, regarding Patrick going to E3 when he was 14; I've attended the show since I was 14 for about 5 years and had jackshit to do with the game industry (my dad just set up a DBA). Getting into the show was stupidly easy back in the 90's. I even went to both Atlanta shows!

Well, Greg Kasavin had to bring him in as a personal guest and he was routinely ignored on the show so I wouldn't really consider that D-list.

Evilore needs to really work more of his contacts though. He should be a known entity in the game industry by this point but he's not.

Talking about GAF irl is srsly one of the most awkward things and I've done it too many times in my life.

I was at a GAFer's wedding last year and a GAFer's spouse was like, "oh you're Karakand?" (GAF didn't have a huge presence there so we were using our Christian names--yes when GAFers hang out irl they use GAF handles) and I was like.  :goty2

I was speaking more to his perception of being a somebody, but hey, how many of you guys were chilling on air with the Giant Bomb guys last E3?  For some folks, even the D-list is better than nothing.

Except he isn't even--

Well, Greg Kasavin had to bring him in as a personal guest and he was routinely ignored on the show so I wouldn't really consider that D-list.

Ding-ding. He is pretty much ignored by most everyone in the industry. How is that "being in" the industry?

There's nothing wrong with Cuban saying we all have stereotypes etc. However, it stands out a lot more because he's saying it with respect to Sterling's comments, which are about as far removed from snap street judgements about who is and isnt dangerous. Plus the black person in hoodie thing appears a little pointed and classless in the light of Trayvon Martin's murder to me, so.

Maybe im inferring too much, like Mark Cuban crossing the street when he sees a nike swathed black man outside of his stadium and then subconsciously beats himself up over it when he realizes its one of his players.

I have no problem presuming that Mark Cuban is an asshole/bigot to a noteworthy extent* (I don't know who he is), but getting bent out of shape because he isn't being politically correct seems misplaced. There was a real good piece on the whole Sterling deal on the Atlantic by Ta-Neshisi Coates I feel is relevant here. The fear of being labeled a bigot is so strong that the process of addressing bigotry is incredibly difficult.

*the Martin reference is crass and in light of the Sterling mess he appears thick as fukk to not qualify his statements

Most conversations I had with other industry members about the NeoGAF populace were generally kind of scornful, OR about how to use it to market our game. It certainly isn't viewed as a bastion of intelligent discourse by people who actually make games.

About 90% of street gangs here are brown people, not Indians though (although we have a large indian population whom I love immensely) these are brown people here (see video below). Brown people are also by far the most racist people in SA, worse that Afrikaaners, they absolutely despise anyone who is not white. It's pretty pathetic :lol  (but understandable due to the brainwashing that was apartheid)

Be a mod and cape for people saying they fear the blacks in hoodies brehs

I saw nothing wrong with Cuban's comments. He's more honest than most (white) people who would claim they don't see race, yet cross the street when a black dude walks towards them. Everyone has prejudices, and being able to acknowledge it mentally and recognize it's wrong is a sign of being "not a racist" imo.

I don't know there is a lot of stuff he could invest those 10 mill in and out of this industry, personally I would have taken the money, no way I'm gonna spent most of my life running a message board.

Well, again, I don't see Major Nelson offering up a special guest badge to AceBandage.

You guys are waaaaaay fucking over reading my point, though.  And in the process, you're missing what I'm saying.  Let me try again:

EL with NeoGAF: living very comfortably, has a sense of being someone, a sense that is supported by occasional favors from industry peeps as well as forum people falling all over him online and in RL meet-ups.

EL without NeoGAF ($10 million sale): living very very comfortably, nobody knows who he is, nor do they care.  unless he figures out a way to hit the jackpot a second time, there isn't even anything to look to in the future.  basically retired and waiting to die.

I know which one I'm picking if I'm a former social pariah hovering around 30 with no dependents.

lol calm down. You just stated that EL is an industry somebody and frankly as someone who works in that industry that isn't the case. I don't think you understand that being an "administrator of a gaming forum" means nothing to most people. Here's another post that echoes exactly what I said because you seemed to have missed my point in the first go around.

I have, but only because I work(ed) in the games industry. Then again none of the people I worked with who knew about NeoGAF knew the name of the guy who ran it or jack fucking shit about him. Most conversations I had with other industry members about the NeoGAF populace were generally kind of scornful, OR about how to use it to market our game. It certainly isn't viewed as a bastion of intelligent discourse by people who actually make games.

It's nothing against EL at all. He's been incredibly lucky to find himself in the position of moderating a somewhat popular message board and it's awesome that he can sell it for a lot of money. However to steer my comments back to your thoughts about keeping/selling the site:
  • Right now, he's just an unknown entity managing a forum that's only claim to fame is being an embarrassing collection of a die-hard game nerds and an easy community to manipulate for marketing.
  • Keeping the $10 million in hopes of a better offer is a risky gamble that could pay off but he's much better off selling the site and re-investing his financial windfall on a new venture that can make him more money.
  • In both scenarios you present, keeping or selling, his non-existent industry profile actually works against him since he could easily market himself to get a better offer OR utilize his notoriety to help steer NeoGAF towards being a bigger industry presence.
  • Meanwhile E3 denies him a badge and lets Nintendo Fansite #1,345 have full access.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
In regards to your Major Nelson guest comment: E3 guest badges are handed out to nobody journalists often as a token of good faith. This happens with fan-sites and foreign enthusiast press. In addition, getting VIP access to an E3 booth is generally the rule rather than the exception. I see how that can impress the random forum goer but that kind of shit is fairly common and goodwill fodder. It ain't special.
