There's a ton of fairs up here in Tokyo where the whole purpose is to bring people with fluent English + some Japanese together with one of the hundreds of companies looking to employ them.

It ends up being Japanese people who can speak varying degrees of English but i found myself being dragged to talk to most firms - was able to start 7 of the 9 interview processes at these events - one of which i took.

Yes, but: Tokyo.

Aren't most of the companies specifically looking for Kanto-based workers?

actually - a lot of companies were looking for people to move - hell, my bro-in-law is getting fished to go work in Nagoya and Osaka so there's definitely chances there it seems.

I also hammered indeed.com which trawls through all the other job sites which makes life so so much easier - outside that Careercross.com is pretty awesome as well.

I dealt with a whole slew of recruiters - out of the many i talked to only two were good (and not just good - OUTSTANDING) but the others were frustrating to deal with. I had one role where the description was for someone looking to move into IT audit and "no previous audit experience is necessary" just a experience in investment banking back office (i have this in spades). I have some IT Audit lead experience but my role wasn't specifically as IT Audit. So i applied -through- the recruiter holding the job - from then on it was this whole back and forth of the recruiter saying that i couldn't be put forward as i have no formal Audit role on my job history - i pointed out that the job description said no audit experience was required - i was told "yes, but you must have held a titled audit role" .... errr.... what?! Anyways - that was one example of the many incidents which basically means you can't help thinking that a lot of these jobs are held hostage behind a wall of recruiters.

The other big worry was just how rapidly salaries have spiraled downwards. A lot of the jobs requiring bilingual, >10 years of experience and to be an expert in either a tech or business function were down into the 6m territory when these are the sort of jobs that would command the 10m+ bracket. I was finding it hard to swallow that 13 years of experience on i'd possibly be looking at taking a job where i'd be on less than i did when i first got here :/ Abenomics hasn't trickled down at all :/

Don't get me started on Abenomics. God, I want to leap into the TV screen whenever someone says that word.

Glad you got a job, and thanks for the info! I'll check out Indeed.com -- I've also called a recruiter friend and another contact in a game company. Wish me luck!

As many have already pointed out elsewhere, this is for "Fukushima Heavy Industries," out of Osaka, not the Fukushima power plant causing all the trouble in northeast Japan. Still. You'd think they might have run this against a PR company who had at least one English speaker on staff.

The name works for both the event, how it was "dealt" with and for this campaign. But the mascot itself is dumb, too. The egg of rebirth - or the death of fertility? Unborn children with angel-wings. :uguu

Yeah, there was so much wrong going on... People posted for the TEPCO guy to step up and take responsibility, or kill himself, or both. I don't think we ever saw a public apology, did we?

Meanwhile there were brave engineers who were close to retirement who basically wrote their own death sentence, just to try and get a rein on the situation. Brave, amazing men.

Yesterday, I nearly got into it with some assclown on the shopping arcade. This is a busy pedestrian mall, and some kid on a 50cc scooter was blowing down it at 60kph. When he was right in front of me, I shouted at him; it took the fucker about 50m just to stop his bike, and he is staring at me. I'm already off my bike, and gesturing for him to come on back so I can educate him in some road etiquette. He sits there staring at me, finally ending up driving away.

I could probably have done with one less cup of coffee at the time, but I was ready to go to town on the chap if he wanted to dance. And any number of other metaphors I can mix.

It would have been a bad, bad idea no matter what though; Japanese police will side with the locals no matter what. If there's violence, it is going to be on the national news, and they'll mention the foreigner angle EVERY SINGLE TIME.

Here's an article from the standpoint of a woman here; I've heard this voiced by many foreign women -- Japan's a great country, but it's not safer than anywhere else if you're a woman:

http://www.japantimes.co.jp/community/2013/10/23/voices/japan-no-safe-country-for-foreign-women/

Quote
At the kōban, the police officer’s response went as follows: “Wow, that’s strange. Were they Japanese? Well, I can’t really do anything because I’m here by myself and they’re probably not there anymore. You’re a young girl, and maybe you shouldn’t be out by yourself alone at night.”

No details about the incident were recorded. Not only had every bystander ignored my pleas for help, but the police had also given me a terribly disappointing response — basically, “Shō ga nai, ne?” (“What can you do, eh?”).

This was not the first time that something like this had happened to me in Japan. The last time was in Osaka one morning, around 10 a.m., when a stranger picked me up and tried to carry me into a love hotel. Then, I kept kicking and punching until he dropped me. I tried to run away, but he was much taller than me and kept catching up.

Hey Tokyo Bore,

I'll be there for the release of Super Robot Wars Z3 on April 10th. We'll get to Tokyo on Monday the 7th. Would be I ok placing a preorder at a local shop three days before the release? I'm guessing it would probably be not a problem to just show up on release day and buy a copy without a preorder as well. Kinda want to take part in the release day fun in Akihabara.

I am not able to answer with certainty about Akiba, but I'm going to guess that you'd be safe without a preorder, what with all the shops there unlikely to all sell out on opening day.

Ugh J-Bore, why do japanese webshops suck so bad? I registered a Tenso account and wanted to ship some stuff over here, but the shops I want to order from only accept bank transfer or cash-on-delivery for payment and not credit cards, not even Paypal  ???

Wonder if this is because of some super exorbitant service fee for credit cards or something, so small stores can't use it unless they are Rakuten affiliated or whatever. DAMN. Really wanted to order two DVD:s

Because they don't care?

Japanese domestic commerce, for some reason, only cares about Japan. There are a number of really easy ways to pay for stuff in Japan. Cash-on-delivery is one, direct bank transfer at an ATM is a snap, and paying for something at a convenience store is frequently even easier, as the cashier walks customers through each step, so they don't even have to navigate ATM or point-of-purchase machine menus. Things can operate this way because very few people are trying to scam/rob sellers in Japan.

In contrast, buyers and sellers in the west seem to start from a position of mutual distrust. We never know if the seller is going to ship what we've paid for, and sellers don't know if the buyer is going to try to snooker them. In the USA in particular, look at how much eBay and Amazon ZShops have had to continuously revise their policies to deal with the rapidly evolving marketplace shenanigans.

Another big thing to be aware of is that selling to a foreign country citizen means that the seller is subject to that country's laws. So if there's a consumer protection plan in, say, France which states a consumer has 30 days to declare they don't like the goods, and all costs must be refunded, including shipping -- well, that would be a major loss proposition for any Japanese company, so why bother opening up that venue?

I woke up to this shit this morning:

Quote
Police rescue kidnapped girl in Hokkaido
A 9-year-old girl who had been missing in Sapporo City, Hokkaido was rescued by police on Sunday. She was found in the apartment of a 26-year-old man about 350 meters from her home.

Police arrested Hajime Matsui on suspicion of detaining the girl, but he is denying the charges.

Rina Hataya went missing last Monday after telling her family that she was going to a neighborhood stationery shop to purchase a notebook.

Police found her late Sunday night in the living room of the apartment of the unemployed man. They said she was crying when she was rescued, but looked relieved.

Police say Matsui, who didn't know the girl, was waiting for her in the parking lot of her home and asked her to follow him.

Police say security cameras installed near his apartment captured a suspicious man walking in front of the girl. Police also received accounts from witnesses about a suspicious man. The information helped them identify Matsui's whereabouts.

Police visited Matsui's home and asked him whether a girl was inside his apartment. Matsui said no girl was there, but they entered his apartment and found her.

First thing they noted was that there was nothing really unusual about him, nothing stood out, but that he played video games. VIDEO GAMES ARE TO BLAME. Not him being a loner, or unemployed, but that he had a notebook talking about Final Fantasy, and KILLING EVERYONE WHO HE HATES.

Yeah. Glad to see the moral panic isn't just relegated to the other side of the Pacific.

I also found out Hikaru Utada is getting married again, this time to an Italian bartender.

Deshou? Deshou?

I mean, it was 2-3 years ago where one prefecture basically outlawed CERO Z-rated games. Let's just go ahead and ignore that the most antisocial and weird games, the ones which are really disturbing, don't go through CERO approval anyway.

About a month out from our trip.

Anyone spent any time in Sangenjaya? Renting an apartment there and it looks like the kind of neighborhood we like, but it's pretty though finding sizable information on what's there. Cormac lived there 20 years ago, which doesn't help much now. Heh. Did find one craft beer bar in the area, though.

Also, Chrono... here are some Osaka beer stores that you should check out. The first two are out in the burbs from what the reviews say:

This is a shot in the dark but can anyone recommend an extended stay hotel/motel/whatever? I'm aiming for three months in the summer and I'd like it to be as cheap as possible. Preferably under ¥100,000 a month.

I found the following companies but I wasn't sure if the prices are good:

I'm looking to stay in the central Tokyo area but I can totally live out west since I'm quite familiar with the Chuo Line. No clue what I should do!

If you're not sure how serious the offer was, do you know them that well as a friend?

OTOH, if you take the offer seriously, and end up overstaying your welcome, you probably haven't lost a particularly good friend.

You may want to see about hostels and any shared households; those are commonly found through a google search, but I've not stayed in one. Oh, one more possibility are "foreigner dormitory" businesses. I don't know if they're around any more, but they're a monthly rent, no downpayment option. The one I stayed in was pretty youth-focused; it's meant to be a living situation though, so no bedding or furniture is supplied.

Yesterday, I ate at a hibachi place in Fort Worth. Today, I visited the wonderful Japanese Gardens and ate at a conveyor belt sushi place in Frisco. It's practically like I went to Japan!

As authentic as your experience was, I doubt you were served by a robot maid, or had your meal interrupted by JKDF (Japan Kaiju Defense Force) alarm bells. That's what life's like here every day!

Also, the sushi served on naked girls is great, but five days a week, and it becomes tiresome. :japancry
