according to the site, the $30 credit is given as a code that could be used the 3DS or Wii U (or sold?)

Wii U owners can use it to buy

Ya, it's a code. How else would they redeem it? There isn't an account to deposit it into...

I might be ok then.  I've got this:

Fire Emblem Awakening
Product Registration         Completed
Downloadable Version

Fire Emblem Awakening
Product Registration Survey    Mar 5, 2013
40
Expired
Downloadable Version

Fire Emblem Awakening
Post Play Survey    Jun 3, 2013
10
Expired

So it was registered but didn't do the registration survey or some shit.  I'll wait to register SMT4 and see if it works, if not then I'll complain.

Overall, I loved the hell out of Shin Megami Tensei IV. While the writing has problems (some of which I couldn’t discuss), and there are some gameplay issues, it does a lot of things right and gives you an epic amount of content to tackle. The side-quests are great, a lot of the themes are clever, the battle and fusion systems are better than ever, the look of the game is great, and–outside of the overworld–the game’s world is a delight to explore. This entry might still scare some new players away, but it is much more accessible than past iterations and is the perfect RPG to play through this summer.

I find that the difficulty in Shin Megami Tensei IV is its greatest feature. Like Demon’s Souls and Etrian Odyssey, you’re compelled to throw yourself back into the action, just to prove that, yes,  you can defeat that demon without ever needing to restart or revive. What makes that difficulty tolerable is Atlus’s commitment to clever combat systems and easing the penalty for dying. Having the freedom to explore and try new (and sometimes risky) strategies in battle is such an addictive yet satisfying experience. I do not regret the possible hundreds of hours I am going to continue to lose to Shin Megami Tensei IV, and I hope it has the power to win over newcomers to the franchise. I like quirky, demon-summoning high schoolers as much as the next Persona fan, but you haven’t truly experienced a Megaten game until you’ve tried to wrap your mind around the infamous conversation system.
Just learn to save.

BUY SOUL HACKERS

This is just the general first edition box right? No, CE thats $10 more or something.

Hmmm, I still need to play Soul Hackers.  Was gonna play it but the length it takes me to finish games these days would've put it and IV back to back and that's recipe for SMT-overkill.

Will play it later this year I suppose.  IV is good stuff, though I haven't finished it yet.  Some of you dudes will probably finish the US version before I finish the JP one.

Yeah, Soul Hackers was released at a very, very bad time for me. I've played a bit of it but as Animal Crossing came out I didn't have enough time to dedicate to SH and AC especially SMT4 coming out so soon. Seems silly to play SH and SMTIV back to back. That's a recipe for disaster imo.

I got an email from Amazon a few hours ago telling me that my payment got declined, as it didn't automatically update the order when I updated my CC info a month ago. When I entered the new info the delivery date got pushed to the 18th, so I contacted Amazon support and they upgraded my shipping to 1-day for free. :rejoice

Mmmmmm, played an hour or so and beat the ritual.

First impressions:

- At first the presention and production are just such a step back from Nocturne for me. The production is very inconsistent. You have 3d dungeons with 3d main character, but with first person battles featuring sprites, but during dialogue the sprites disappear and you end up having talking heads, and there's anime cutscenes on that top of all that. In terms of presentation, it doesn't feel like SMT aside from the first person battles, and the art design. But once you play the game, you start to adjust and get used to it. Then the more you play, the more it's less on my mind. For one thing:

- Battle animations are stellar. Use a zan spell and your enemies will wrap around the battlefield as if caught in a tornado. Use a multi hit physical attack? Oh man, they look like hit HARD.

- Another thing, the game looks great on the 3ds screen. It doesn't look impressive at all in videos, but when you're playing it on your 3ds, it looks great.

- I completed the first dungeon ritual. I had one "game over" so far. I'm using "'s because it's impossible to have game overs in SMT4. When your party is wiped out, you end up going to limbo where the dead wait to be carried off to the Land of the Dead. A character offers to revive you - for a macca fee.   Don't have enough money? It goes on your tab. If your mc dies in battle, you don't get a game over. This resulted in me just cruising through battles even if the mc dies once I had a full party. This, in combination with the ability to save anywhere, could put off some more hardcore SMT fans. Right now I'm not at the point where I really don't mind, but as it is, you cannot get a game over. I've basically been playing on autopilot so far and it's not really challenging to a vet like me, but I'm sure it'll pick up soon.  It's not like the hospital was tough in SMT3 so it's logical to have some reservations.

- For that reason, I think this is probably the most nub friendly SMT I've played, at least so far, and I've played 1, 2, 3, all Persona's, DDS 1+2, Dev Sur 1,  and both Raidou's. This isn't a bad thing, and it's not "easy" either. I was one shotted by a demon just one level above me.

- The negotiation system so far is really great. Each demon has their personality and it doesn't feel like they have stock quotes like in the past. A lot of funny dialogue has popped up, like suggesting I'm a demon pimp, or when I told the new fairy type demon Neara (sp) that I wanted her and she saw through me and blurted that the only reason was so I could fuse her with another demon. Another demon ran off thinking he'd be emergency food because I told him I just wanted to have him as back up just in case. The script is full of personality for the demons and I haven't seen demons this alive since Persona 2.

- Music is surprisingly stellar.

- Dungeon design is standard 3d SMT with a twist. I'm really liking the dungeon design here.

Hmm, a gaffer corrected me and said the tab isn't cumulative. If you don't pay the fee and die again, it's game over. Neato.

edit: Ummm wow man, game is baller. Because you can save anywhere, you start to forget to save, until some random level 2 demon kicks your ass when you're level 5. The new encounter system really makes things tense, because you'll have these demons running straight at you and you won't have time to react and swing your sword, so you end getting back attacked and once in battle they take advantage of all your weaknesses. Game is no slouch in that area, it has all the hallmarks of SMT tension despite new additions to making it easier for people to play. I'm at a point now where I'm saving every floor. I think that's a smart idea and if I die it doesn't put me back too much.

This script in this game is amazing. The demons have so much personality.

"If I drink this much blood I'll get chubby!"

Also love the encounter system while going through tight, cramped hallways. Feels claustrophobic. Can't wait for Tokyo.

The negotiation system is actually pretty terrible in this one.  Yeah it's funny, but when the same reply with the same demon gets you two completely different outcomes (happens most of the time) it's just so random that at like 15 hours in I decided to just mash A and keep picking the first choice on negotiations until it gets to bartering, which I do manually.  Surprisingly that works like 50% of the time to recruit them.

Yeah I dunno wtf he's talking about.  Game is not easy at all.  You can't use that no-game-over stuff unless you wanna have no money all the time.  I just reset when I die and save often.

The first part is tough and later sections have some nasty fights here and there.  One of the biggest problems is that it's easy to get back-attacked and later on enemy groups can instant-wipe your team if that happens.  Dunno if it's tougher than Nocturne, I'd say it's more annoying at parts, but even if it isn't it's definitely the toughest SMT related game since Nocturne.

Tokyo is SO GREAT. I'm exploring Ueno like a hawk trying to track down all the resources. I just got 2000 macca worth of resources on one trip! FINALLY. Demons are dropping macca (albeit at 100 per battle but still, better than pre-Tokyo which was zero). I feel so tense playing this in Tokyo - just like how SMT should be.

I'm concentrating on quests, getting enough macca to get those special demons, and leveling up.

Haven't played a jrpg this good in years.

Hmmm, tip for beginners:

- When Burroghs starts allowing you to buy your own apps, concentrate on demon related ones first. Concentrate on Demon Skill +1 the first few levels. I concentrated on Expand Stock and talking related apps at first, and that was a mistake because the demons I fuse have REALLY good skills lists and I can only pick from four skills. It probably seems best to mix it between demon skill +1 and and skill expansion 1 (for the mc). By the time you get to Tokyo, both demons and your mc should have a full skill list, allowing you to concentrate on talking apps for the time being, and that's when talking gets important beyond scouting anyways.

Really wish you could reallocate app points.

I got it on DD because i had no other choice.  If i bought it from the states it would be $15 more because i live in Australia.  And i dont really care for artbooks sand such.  I hope that more of money goes towards Atlus instead of Nintendo though.

Knocked out a bunch of quests tonight. David was a challenge but I beat him second try, the dragon Long was easy, knocked out the other quests aside from three left over. Made me a Tam Lin (special demon) and a Jack Frost. Hee ho!

Really miss the old ps2 game animations. Doesn't feel right without having Jack Frost look at all giddy like he has the hiccups :(
